Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Is it bad that I want this gun?

- Cool list - the 10 best boxing matches from recent history. Some of these fights I haven't seen (yet).

- Profile of the Trevor Bauer situation. Will be interesting to see what Bauer does next and have to say that Padres pitcher Jacob Nix doesn't come off too well here.

- Tucker Carlson Episode 28. He takes on the "trans industry." Follow the money!

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- The Cleveland Guardians say goodbye to Terry Francona. Tito was the best!

- Army could join the AAC in the coming weeks. Navy is already in the conference and their annual game would remain the same. Seems like a natural.

- Wow - Katie Hobbs is no longer the Governor of Arizona. Was not expecting this development.

- VDH on the Ukrainian Gordian knot.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- What it was like to eat with Anthony Bourdain (from the archives).

- Gambling revenue in Macau - was this drop due to Covid (Las Vegas recovered) or due to economic changes in China?

- Morgan Housel: The luckier you are - the nicer you should be.

- Is the collapse of RSN's a problem or opportunity for MLB? Article misses one of the biggest issues - for years teams like the Yankees and Red Sox squeezed the cable companies to get top dollar for their games. When streaming became the norm the cable companies turned around and said you can't offer a streaming service at a price below what we pay per sub. That's in part how you wind up with NESN streaming (Red Sox and Bruins) at a monthly cost of $29.99. Who wants to pay that?

Justin Verlander

Image

Was thinking last night about how great Justin Verlander has been these past couple of seasons. He's the reigning AL Cy Young award winner and is second in odds to win it again this year. His 16-3 record and 1.84 ERA is pretty impressive but will it be enough to overcome Dylan Cease's excellent season for the White Sox.

Also couldn't help but think of how Verlander was taken with the second pick of the 2004 MLB draft behind Matt Bush who was taken by San Diego first overall. Bush never made it to the major leagues. Can you imagine how the fortunes of the Padres may have been much different if they had gone with Verlander instead?

Also to top it off - Verlander is married to Kate Upton (pictured above).

MLB Backs Down on Vaccine Mandate

Major League Baseball has backed off on its reported requirement that all minor league baseball players be vaccinated. "Minor-league coaches and staff who have close access to the players are required to get vaccinated, unless granted an exemption." This policy is based upon the advice of "expert consultants."

Here's hoping the MLB lockout lasts all season and the Minor League baseball players win their lawsuit about being paid less than minimum wage and any coaches who get fired for being unvaccinated sue the pants off MLB.

So let it be written - so let it be done.

Is Jon Lester a Hall of Famer?

Image

Is Jon Lester a Hall of Famer? As much as I love Jon Lester - I would have to say NO.

In his 16-year MLB career he had 200 wins, 2,488 K's, and a 3.66 ERA (117 ERA+). That's good but not Hall of Fame good. He also made over $198 million in his career so don't feel too badly about Jon not getting into Cooperstown.

People are making the argument for Lester because of his postseason heroics. He was a stud on three World Series Championship teams (two in Boston and one in Chicago). He was a cancer survivor and all-around good guy. Hard not to root for him.

I love Jon Lester and the way the Red Sox treated him as they parted ways was when I started to get disenchanted with the organization. If the organization didn't lowball Lester (initial offer of $70 million 4-years when he ended up signing for $155 million over six) and had offered him a fair deal he'd have never left Boston. But in 2014 owner John Henry didn't want to invest long term in a 31-year old pitcher.

He pitched another 7 seasons after leaving Boston and now people are making arguments about if he's a Hall of Famer. If he does get in - I hope he wears a Cubs hat.

More Linky Links

More stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Steven Pressfield: The Mission Like a Movie. More Fighter Pilot Wisdom.

- Interesting bit of baseball history; The incredible story of Ray Caldwell, the MLB pitcher who survived a lightning strike to finish a game.

- Climate Scientists Make Us Skeptical. Solid argument but I admit I was distracted by the fact creepy Laurence Krauss and his Jeffrey Epstein connections was the main antagonist.

- Director of CDC, Rochelle Walenski warns of ADE, Antibody Dependent Enhancement. Be sure to listen to the videos as well. Potentially scary stuff.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Is it just me or does it seem like some of the early Tom Cruise movies like Risky Business and All the Right Moves have just disappeared into the ether? You hardly ever hear about those movies anymore or see them on TV or on any of the streaming services. Strange... MLB to end 70-year relationship with Topps. Tradition means nothing anymore to those who run the game. Citizens should ban together for a class-action suit to prevent MLB from ever referring to itself as "America's Pastime" ever again... Some Ancient Indian wisdom says your should never eat your next meal until you feel hunger pangs. The feeling of hunger is your body's signal to you that the previous meal has been digested and that your body is ready for you to eat again. Simple wisdom but so wise... My idea of multi-tasking is reading in the morning while drinking hot coffee or reading at night while drinking a cold beer... In light of what's happening in Afghanistan - I have the urge to re-read David Halberstam's The Best and the Brightest for perspective (though I highly doubt anyone in the Biden Administration could be called either "the best" or "the brightest" with a straight face)...

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Democrats control of the House is increasingly fragile. And it is true that the President's party normally loses ground in midterm elections. (HT Newmark's Door)

- I'm amused that this this may be the new look of protest.

- Fascinating discussion - Peter Thiel and The Nixon Seminar (here's the transcript if you prefer to read the exchanges). Going to listen to this seminar more than once.

- MLB anti-trust exemption may be coming to an end because of moving the All-Star game. Good! The owners will be best pleased with Rob Manfred when that happens.
