Snow Day!

Image
Sitting here at my desk with Daisy for company at a time when I would normally be at work.  Old Man Winter is flexing his muscles one (last?) time this morning in the form of freezing rain, sleet, snow, and high winds.  In short, it is NASTY outside today.

I was getting a little worried this morning.  I'd actually gone out to start the Rav 4 to melt the ice off it and called the bus garage myself when I came in.  They knew we were delayed at that point, so I don't know if I called before they called me or if they forgot to call me again.  At 7:30 I had my coat on and was getting ready to go out to start the Rav again when the phone rang to let me know school was cancelled.

The wet stuff seems to have died off, though the wind remains wicked as ever.....seriously, if you could hear some of these gusts hitting the house, you'd be expecting the roof to lift off at any time.  I guess I can deal with that and keep my doctor's appointment in a bit.  The roads, I hope, will have been plowed and salted by then.

Not a lot on the agenda today.  I can always do a couple loads of laundry...never ending, you know.  I'm going to roast a small turkey that I had to take out of the freezer Saturday night to make room for a much larger one I won in a raffle.  Reading some more of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a given.  It's very interesting, not my normal kind of book, but good.  I'll probably work on my post for Wednesday, too....I'm guest-hosting the Writing to God: 40 Days of Praying with My Pen community over on Dawn's blog, Beneath the Surface: Breath of Faith.  I hope you'll come over and check it out.

let us exhalt his name together!"

Pondering on Valentine's Day

Image
Unknown Source
I'm getting around to pondering a little on the late side today.  Had to make a Walmart run to get Valentines' Day treats for the kids on the bus.  Yeah, *blushing* I'm like that......pump 'em full of sugar and send 'em home!  Ha, ha.  Give them caffeine and sugar for breakfast then stick them on the bus, will you?

What?!  I'm not really that mean.  Well, the secondary kids get their treats on the bus, so I guess they are kind of sugared up when they get off the bus, but a lot of them have been chugging coffee, cola, and energy drinks all day so I doubt I do much damage there.  As for the little ones, they get their treats as they are getting off the bus.  That way it's up to Mom and Dad whether they can eat it then or not (plus it keeps the garbage off the bus floor!).

Oh, I got Valentines' Day stuff for the family, too.  The newest Bond DVD for Tim.

Well, now that you're probably hungry, let's get to the point of today's post...Pondering with a Purpose brought to you courtesy of Brenda.  Just click below on the pretty blue button to visit Brenda and the Pondering home.

Image

This week Ms. Brenda is asking us to expound on:  LIVE

To get started, I guess I'd first have to decide what I hear when I read the word.  Do I hear the word with a long i or a short i?

Now I like a good concert or live show as much as anyone, maybe more than some...especially if it happens to be the concert of one Toby Keith (I go to his show EVERY year).

Image
Yes, this was taken from my seat...
front row, center.  I could have reached
out and touched the man if the nice
security guard standing right beside me
wouldn't have tackled me.  LOL

But that meaning of "live" isn't the one I thought of first.  No, I thought of it with the short i first.  I think that might have something to do with my One Word theme word for the year...intentional.  To me living is being intentional and if you're being intentional, then you're living.

I think of living two ways.  The first is embracing what comes your way in life and making the most of it...good and bad.  I guess that would be kind of a when-life-hands-you-lemons-make-lemonade philosophy.  The other way I view living is to make things happen.  It's not sitting around waiting for life to hand you the lemons, it's planting the seeds, tending the plants, and picking the fruits yourself.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

Hooooo-raaaah!  Today was the last day of any school for the summer.  And what did I do?  I agreed to drive a bus three mornings a week for a Christian camp.  Ah well...it is only for about an hour 3 times a week, the camp would be desperate if I said no, and they are such nice people.  I'd probably do it for free just to help them out, but don't tell them that.!  LOL  I start June 18.

Things are going good with Miss Daisy, but whew!  I forgot just how much work it is running after a puppy. She's a little sweetheart, though.  Totally worth it.

Well, on with the Wednesday Hodgepodge, courtesy of Joyce.

1. How many students were in your high school graduating class? Did you know most, if not all of them?
~ There were over 360 in my graduating class.  At the time I guess I knew most of them by name.  Since getting on Facebook I can't believe how many I don't remember at all.

2. What was the last thing you photographed?
~ Daisy

3. Pickles-love 'em or loathe 'em? If its love what's something you eat that needs a pickle?
~ I love dill pickles and sweet gherkins.  Gotta have the gherkins with my grilled cheese.

4. What's a stereotype you seem to perpetuate without meaning to?
~ Bookworms are total dorks.

5. Ever been horse back riding? If so is it something you enjoy? If not, do you have any interest? Did you watch the Kentucky Derby? Will you be watching the last leg of the Triple Crown this weekend?
~ I haven't ridden in years, but used to quite frequently.  If I had the place and the money I'd own horses.  I'm not really into racing.

6. What's your favorite 'wedding' movie?
~ Hands down....My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

7. What is one 'tourist attraction' in the USA you'd like to see in person.
~ I can't pick just one!  I am so into all those great old tacky roadside attractions that I want to drive across the U.S. on Route 30 (and do a detour on Route 66) just to see them!

Bring On Summer!

I won't be around today....at least not until later.  This is my last full day of work.  I still have a week of driving for a private school, but that is less than part-time.  You will find me beginning to slip into summer mode at 2:30 this afternoon.

Friday Fragments

Mommy's Idea

Woo-hoo!  It's Friday and that means it's time once again for Friday Fragments with Mrs. 4444 and all the other nice fraggers over at Half-Past Kissin' Time.  This is the blog hop where you get to do some house cleaning.  Wait!  It's more fun than it sounds.  By house cleaning, I mean you get to clear the bloggy clutter...all those little bits and pieces floating around in your mind that you want to share, but aren't big enough to be a blog post on their own.

Image

Starting out today's fragments with an award.  Wow!  What a nice surprise and great way to begin the day.  Artistic31Mama (who just happens to be one of my "kids" from back in my youth leader days) has passed on the Liebster Award to my humble little blog.

Image

The Liebster Award is meant to recognize blogs with followings of less than 200.  That is definitely this blog!  LOL  In return for accepting the award, I now have to offer it to 5 more small blogs that I think deserve to be recognized, so here they are, in no particular order:
For you bloggers who choose to accept your award, here's all you have to do:

1) Post the award to your blog.
2) Link back to the blogger who gave the award.
3) Give the award to 5 blogs with less than 200 followers.
4) Leave a comment for each blogger letting them know you have offered them the award.

Simple enough, right?  And a nice way to get smaller blogs, which just may be excellent, known to more readers.

I never realized just how much we use a microwave....until ours died.  Heating food up the old-fashioned way is such a pain.  (I would have made a crummy pioneer.)  Tim's home today and after spending much time researching the matter online....my hopes of a quick, cheap fix have died.  It appears that the capacitator (am I the only one who hears that and can think of nothing but the "flux capacitator" in the Back to the Future car?) is bad.  A new one costs $300 according to the website.  I don't think we paid $300 for the whole microwave 2-3 years ago.

Image

Good news on the financial front.  We've made a bunch of phone calls this morning and the worst of the wolves are at bay for a while longer.  Tim also tells me the hotel project is finally set to begin the week after next (PLEEEEASE no more delays!) and he is definitely going to be running it.  Since it's already months behind due to delays with permits and banks he'll be working plenty of overtime to try and bring it in on time.  Not an immediate relief, but better days are coming.  Yea!!

Image

Warmer weather and the end of the school year drawing closer means the kids on the bus are starting to feel their oats (I'm trying to be nice...can you tell?).  There's not a lot of calm or quiet going on.  The two worst offenders are off the bus all next week.  Somehow or another they managed to get a balloon sucked out the window last week and it stuck to the front of a big truck behind the bus.  When I turned off the highway the trucker laid on the horn.  I don't know if he was mad or just honking at the kids because they were all looking out the back window and carrying on.  I told my boss and she said "Write 'em up!"  So I did.  It's probably the start of a trend as they get more and more excited.

Image

Time for me to find something for lunch (it takes soooo much longer without that darn microwave) so I can head back into work early.  I need to fuel the bus and on Fridays I pick up at a private school before doing the public school runs.

You all have a great day and a wonderful weekend!

Openings

I had the best moment at work this morning.  I stopped in at the bus garage between runs to say "hey" to whomever might be there and use the facilities.  Most days I manage to stop, though not always since it's such a small window of time.  There are usually only a couple of people in the lounge.  Today was one of the rare days when the room was full.

There was a big discussion going on when I walked in.  It was biblical in nature (unusual).  One of our drivers is.....a pastor without a church (he was asked to leave his old one after years of service for petty, small-minded, reasons) and I ended up, along with him, answering a lot of questions from the others.  We talked about creationism and can it co-exist with dinosaurs.  We talked about who in the Bible is truly evil.  We talked about the details of the bible stories they don't teach you in Sunday school.

The ladies all said they enjoyed the discussion and hoped we could do it again (very, very cool since a couple of them don't know Jesus).  I had a blast, myself, and I think it was good for the pastor-driver's self-assurance.

Don't you love it when God opens unexpected doors?!

Picking Up The Fragments

Every Friday the lovely Mrs. 4444 @ Half-Past Kissin' Time is our hostess-with-the-mostest for Friday Fragments...a chance to share those little bits that aren't enough on their own to be a post.

Mommy's Idea

I went to my Spiritual Formation class last night with a lot of.....dread....yes, I think that's the right word for it.  We are currently reading Invitation to a Journey by Robert Mulholland.  Oy.  Tough read.  I have been struggling like I don't remember ever struggling with a book.  There is some great information in it.  If only I could find it.  Mulholland uses difficult language and a lot of it.  It seems to take him several paragraphs (or even pages) to say what I think he could say in about 20 words.  In other words, the book is "clear as mud."

I even wrote about it in the journal we are required to keep....complaints and then I wrote out a prayer asking for a better attitude and clarity.  I have to say that my reading did improve a bit after that, but it was still like slogging through jello.

So, I went to class last night feeling kind of dumb, figuring everyone else would have breezed right through it.  Then the first question the instructor asked was if anyone was struggling with the book and all the honest people started piping up.  (A lot maintained their superior silence....like the lady who shared the 20 or so ways a single pebble reminded her of Jesus)  The instructor said it is a difficult book, verbous and nearly unintelligable in some parts, that we just have to glean the nuggets the best we can.  In his words, "If you're struggling, you're NORMAL."

I really needed that boost.

Megan got her first paycheck after working the split-shift schedule she volunteered for.  Not so hot.  She didn't realize that she only gets 5-6 hours a day doing that.  She spoke to her boss yesterday and will continue doing it a couple of days a week, but the rest of the time she will work full days.  Yea!  Arranging the rides for her during the middle of the day was getting tricky.  I so wish she'd get her driver's permit.  If she and her boyfriend break up I don't know what we'll do because he's been a huge help with that.

Have I told you about the...uh....snafu with the school bus endorsement portion of my CDL?  Every four years school bus drivers have to recertify.  That means hours of classroom instruction, hours of road time with a trainer and retaking the written and driving tests.  We are also required to have a physical every year.

I did all that.  I put in the classroom time back in March or April.  I did all the rest this summer.  Last Friday I got three, THREE!!, letters from the Dept. of Transportation.  One said since I didn't take the class, my school bus endorsement was revoked.  The second said since I didn't take the knowledge test, my school bus endorsement was revoked.  The third said that since I didn't take a physical, my school bus endorsement was revoked.

I have been sweating since August 31 when my endorsement ran out, anyway.  I told my employer that it was up and I still hadn't received the new card.  Oh, it's okay....you did everything, it's been sent in (my employer sends everything), technically you're legal.  In the fall and spring, the state police do random school bus inspections.  I've been living in fear of being nabbed for one of those.  I'm not sure they will swallow the whole "technically" thing.

Now I've got the letters.  Obviously, my paperwork is missing in action.  My employer says keep driving.  I'm not happy.  If I get caught, it could mean my whole license, not just my CDL.  I just don't have a lot of faith in being "technically" legal.  They are trying to track it down.  Nothing so far.

I will not be a happy camper if it comes down to I have to do it all again.

Maybe it's a sign.  I kept hemming and hawing over the summer about whether I really wanted to do this another four years.....

I'm looking forward to tonight.  As soon as I get home and change, Tim and I are headed to the 'Burgh to meet up with friends at Station Square for some awesome seafood at Joe's Crab Shack.  YUM-O!!

You all have a wonderful weekend with your families and friends...and don't forget to say thanks to the One that made it possible!

End of the Summer

Good morning!  It's a big day around here.  It's BACK-TO-SCHOOL day!  All though....this is the second year I'm not sending anyone off with a new backpack full of carefully chosen notebooks, folders, and pencils.  It's still a big day because it means the end of summer vacation and a return to work for me.  It's a sad, but true thing...when the alarm went off at 4:00 this morning I couldn't ignore it.  I had to get up.

So, I'm up.  I've had breakfast.  I'm dressed.  My hair is done.  All my stuff is organized and ready to go.  And it isn't even 5:30 yet.  Sigh.  I miss my bed already.

We will have to see how blogging plays out in the coming weeks.  Some of it will depend on Megan's work schedule.  Today, for example, she starts work at 6:15, gets off at 11:30 and then goes back at 3:30 until 5:15.  I am the only one that can take her to work, but I have to be at my own job by 6:20 at the latest.  That means she has to go to work early and hang out.  The 11:30 time works out with me going to the gym.  My mom will take her at 3:30 and her boyfriend will get her at 5:15.  Sheeeesh!  I sure hope this motivates her to get her license and save up for a truck of her own.

The rest of how blogging will go depends on what free time I can find.  I'm not giving up my gym time at 10:00 every day.  Tuesday evenings I go to a Bible study at church.  Next week my seminary class begins on Thursday.  And if I can ever get in touch with her...I'm supposed to start mentoring a lady on Wednesday evenings.  That doesn't leave a lot of time to look at Tim during the week.  I think we're going to have to get creative about that.

Happy Monday and Happy Back-to-School for those who haven't gone back already!  Have a great day and drive safely.....if I have to run over you in my big yellow bus it's going to ruin both of our days.  (wink)

It's A Sick, Sick World

I'm showing signs of my deteriorating age and can't remember if I've told you all about what's going on at the daycare center Megan used to work for, so forgive me if some of this is a replay.

Megan quit last month after being called on the carpet for something that really wasn't her fault (or responsibility).  I wasn't thrilled.  I did want her out of there, but thought she should have stuck it out until she found another job.  Turns out I was wrong.  Waaaaay wrong.

A week or two after she quit she got a call from a friend that still worked there saying the owner's husband had been arrested.  The next day an article in the paper told the tale and listed the charges:  rape of a child, child pornography, attempted rape, endangering the welfare of a child....a whole long list of nasty charges.

The daycare closed the following week and is still closed this week while the investigation continues.  A detective came to the house this afternoon to talk with Megan.  He was a nice guy and told us a lot about what's going on.  What they know at this point is:
  • He was arrested on similar charges in 1989.  So his wife, the owner of the daycare, knowingly allowed a known sexual preditor unlimited access to the daycare.  The detective told us she will be arrested for that if nothing else.
  • They found over 600 pictures on his phone.  Many are downloaded from the internet, but they will have to go through them one by one with someone familiar with the daycare kids to see if any of them are there (though at this time they have no indications that any daycare kids were harmed).
  • The owner is standing by him.  She says he's "a nice man with a problem."  She is sending their teenage daughter off to Florida to live with relatives so he can come home once bail is posted.
  • The child he is charged with raping is his wife's granddaughter (she apparently doesn't care about anyone in her family).  She is getting counseling.
  • The girl's mother knew her stepfather had this history, yet she chose to leave her child at the daycare with him and according to Megan he often drove her home with no one else along.  Those investigating the case are giving her a really rough time about that.
It's all just too horrible to comprehend.  How can someone do that?  What goes on in their mind?  I guess as the detective said, if we understood that, we'd need help, too.  Megan gave the detective several more leads....like the daycare owner coached midget football cheerleaders and brought them to the daycare all the time.  Was she scouting for him???  She also told about the times she'd witnessed the owner smacking kids when she was angry or frustrated with them.

Yeah, so.......Megan's call was definitely better on this one.  I'm grateful she went with her own instincts this time.

Look for Blessings in All Things

The week before last I was none too pleased with Megan's decisions concerning work.  She quit.  There were extenuating circumstances and I believed she did need to get out of that daycare and find other work, but in some things I am a cautious person.  Work is one of them.  Unless there is a reason you absolutely can't stay at a job, I believe you should stick with it while you hunt for another.  At least that way you still have income, because I don't know how it is where you are, but here in PA you can't collect unemployment if you quit.  Not to mention that these days jobs are not that easy to come by.

So, that's where we were and I wasn't thrilled to have an 18-year-old at home staying out all night, sleeping all day and pretty much doing what she wanted.  I kept waiting for the "Can I borrow a few dollars?  I'll pay you back." stuff to start.  It hasn't yet, well at least not actual asking for money.  One change is that she and Cody are here nearly every night for supper so I'm feeding both of them.  I can live with that for now and it is giving me a chance to get to know this kid with whom she is already talking of living with.  I like him so far.  He's quiet and shy around us (actually, he's afraid of Tim), but he's good to her and that's what matters.  It's been a long time since I've seen my baby truely happy.  She told her doctor that she never thought she deserved a nice guy like him.  Ughhhh....I would love to go back in time and slap her first boyfriend silly for doing such a number on her.

Anyway, by Friday I found myself absolutely THRILLED that Megan was no longer at the daycare.  Why?  Because the owner's husband, who was at the daycare all the time, was arrested Friday.....for RAPING A CHILD, umpteen counts of child pornography, child endangerment, attempted rape, and a whole lot of other nasty stuff.  The child involved is his own granddaughter.  How sick is that?

So the daycare is closed all week while the investigation goes on.  No one has contacted Megan outside of one parent, but it may go that far since she was often there at night when he was there.  The owner is sticking by him.  She says she knows it's horrible but he's her husband.  I (along with most others) remain convinced she knew what he was doing and wonder how the heck she justifies letting him anywhere near the daycare?

Megan quitting turned out to be a blessing, getting her out of there before everything hit the fan.  Now, if we could just have the added blessing of a new job.....

30 Day Challenge, Day 8: Better Late Than Never

Sorry I am running so far behind today.  This week has been crazy so far and it's not looking like it's going to get any better.

I have a CDL license with a passenger and school bus endorsement.  That means every 4 years I have to sit through 7 hours of classroom time, log 3 hours on the road with an instructor, and pass both the written exam and driving exam again.  The company I drive for sent all of us that must recertify this year to classes Monday and Tuesday after work.  It was nice that they provided a mini bus to haul us there and back and that they paid for the class.  Not so nice was the part that the class was in Johnstown, about 45 minutes from the bus garage....nor the part about them lasting until 10:00 pm....or having to drive another 20 minutes home after getting back to the bus garage.  Four hours of sleep a night is really not enough.  At 46, I'm having to admit I can't pull all-nighters any longer.  At least not without paying a price.

Today I spent the break between the morning and afternoon runs schlepping all over town in the wind and rain with another woman soliciting donations to the Civic Club's annual bingo fundraiser.  We got quite a few "on the spot" donations.  I think they felt sorry for us being out in the rain.

Tonight I really must start calling people from the church.  Our constitution was finally approved a few weeks ago and we took nominations for our first church officers this past Saturday.  I am in charge of the whole process, so now I have to weed out the ineligible and then call everyone else to ask if they are willing to be on the ballot.  I really must find time to relax and watch American Idol, too.

Tomorrow I plan to start a major cleaning of the house because Megan and I are hosting a Lia Sophia jewelery party on Saturday afternoon.  My cousin's daughter is just getting started selling it and I think we are her very first party so I want it to go well for her.

On top of it all, I am so excited about the Relevant Convention in Harrisburg, PA this coming October  (click the button in the upper left of the blog to read all about it).  It is for blogging women of faith and my dear blog buddy Beth from Beth: A Work in Progress told me she was thinking of going and wanted to know if I'd want to go and we could meet in person.  No brainer!  Of course I want to meet her.  So, this week we bought our tickets, Beth booked the room and now the emails have been flying back and forth as we try to figure out the best mode of transportation for Beth to get here and drive the rest of the way with me.  We are bouncing off the walls!  I don't know how we're ever going to wait until October.

Okay, now on to Day 8 of the 30 Day Challenge.  I am supposed to tell you about or show you a place I have traveled to.

I wish I had the time and energy to scan some better pictures, but I'll save those for another day.  To share these I had to copy them from the archives of one of my old blogs.  They are from our 2006 visit to Chincoteague and Assateague Islands in Virginia.  The Islands are my happy place so I hope you enjoy the peek.

Who Ya Gonna Call?

There's something strange in the neighborhood!  Actually, it's at the daycare where Megan is working.  They stay open until 11:00 for parents who work afternoon shifts or go to night school.  For the last 2-3 weeks Megan has been working the late shift.  She's only been there alone once.  Usually, there are two of them there.

The one time Megan worked alone I picked her up and helped her clean up so we could get out of there.  She went on and on about how the place creeped her out at night and how everyone who works there thinks the place is haunted.  I kind of pooh-pooh'ed it figuring everyone's imaginations were working overtime.  Any big building is kind of creepy at night when it's dimly lit and no one else is around.

Last night Megan called a little before 11:00 in a panic.  She had been sitting in the office working on the computer.  The other girl was leaning in the doorway talking to her.  Suddenly, a can of Lysol that was sitting on a shelf HURLED ACROSS THE ROOM!  A little bit after that they were again together when the water jug on the water cooler suddenly shot up and flew across the room.

Following all of that, Megan (and it amazes me she did this) went and used the restroom alone even though she has always said that is the creepiest place in the whole building.  Well, she took care of business quickly and opened the door to wash her hands.  While she was washing her hands a can of red paint fell and splattered on the floor.  Apparently there was no place for it to fall from and the only thing up above was an air vent.

The girls called the owner and she sent her husband down.  He said he expected to come and be able to explain it all away, but even he ended up rattled.  He was going to stay after the girls left to see if anything else happened.  I really hope he can find an explanation, because right now Megan says she will not work nights there for any reason.

I don't believe in ghosts (at least not as the wandering souls of the dead) but I do think there are things we can't explain.   I admit, I'd be totally creeped out if it had happened to me.

How would you react to something like that?
