There were a lot of seamstresses, and then there weren't. The best of the webpages I found looking at this shift in history:

Kittie Knox did so much and died so young: a bicycle racer, a pathbreaker, and a seamstress who made her own knickerbocker suits to ride in. Rosa Parks was also also a seamstress; one of her works was recently conserved with some delicate custom patching. We know there must have been more African American seamstresses and dressmakers, and that they will have been under-reported; a museum specialist went looking and found mostly echoes. But also a thesis on The Fall of the American Dressmaker 1880-1920 (pictures start on p 41, pictures of full size recreated dressmaker-style formal dresses on p 60). In the substructure of the Gilded Age, the poor base under the gilded crust, garment and textile workers have been unionizing and striking in the US since at least 1824. Seamstresses -- the word is always unstable, I find -- are between dressmakers (roughly, a claim to be a designer of dresses) and factory or piecework garment workers. "Seamstress" has been used to refer to people at both ends of that, and menders too; and often a seamstress did any of those jobs as available. SO all of that was in the back of my mind when reading the recent data-dive from The Pudding on how the mass manufactured women's clothing size system works (and doesn't). The first half of the article is framed in a series of plots sharing one X-axis, "Waistline in Inches". It walks us through how, even if only the waistline measurement counts, current production is not good at providing clothes for everyone, or even letting us know what's likely to fit beforehand. The second half of the article is about learning how to sew, and a little bit how to fit, your own clothes, and revisiting the limitations of mass fitting models given that. But even this understates the limitations of a single scale for clothes. Who dealt with that when clothes did fit? Seamstresses.

Today is partly sunny and mild.

I fed the birds. I've seen a flock of sparrows.

EDIT 2/28/26 -- I cut and labeled four more water jugs. These are for flower mixes: Part-Shade Wildflowers, Edible Flowers, Fragrant Flowers, and 20th Anniversary Prairie Wildflowers. I skipped the Monarch Mix because that includes a bunch of nectar annuals like zinnias and cosmos which prefer warmer weather; I may make a jug for this later in spring.

The honeybees are out in force today. They are investigating everything to see if it is a flower. I am not a flower, but at least they finally found the actual flowers. In addition to the lavender crocus, there are now two yellow ones by the log garden and a white one in the rain garden. Many of the snowdrops are open too. :D Yay flowers!

EDIT 2/28/26 -- I dug up several clumps of volunteer daffodils that had seeded themselves into the parking lot, and transplanted them all around the house yard to go under various trees where they will be safer. I still need to move a lot of snowdrops, though.

I've seen a male cardinal. I've heard the red-winged blackbirds singing, but haven't seen them.

Where do the eggs in your refrigerator come from? The supermarket, of course! But before that, they come from chickens. Sure, you already knew that, but you've probably never thought about how a hen makes the egg, and how they manage to do it almost every day for months at a time. What goes on inside a hen in order to lay an egg every day is astonishing.

Egg production is managed differently depending on whether you want eggs for the breakfast table or chicks. If you don't gather eggs every day, a hen ends up with several eggs, and stops producing them in order to keep them warm for hatching. But for chicks, you'll need a rooster. But if you only have hens, and take their egg every day, they'll keep laying them as long as they have the proper nutrition and the proper stimulation- which is not a rooster, but sunlight!

Alternatively: in book canon, Liet is Chani's father, suggesting that movie!Liet could be Chani's mother, which adds another layer of delicious wrinkles to everything. Letters they write when Liet is away on empire business? Is Chani curious or resentful about her family elsewhere in the galaxy? What hopes does Liet have for Chani, even if they never leave the pages of her journal?

I think there's a lot of potential for correspondence in the post-canon era, with Shallan trying to communicate via seons from the Cognitive Realm. Worrying about Adolin? Theorizing with Navani or Jasnah as to what this might mean for the Radiants? Mentoring Gaz or some of her other squires remotely? Negotiating with Thaidakar? (I'm familiar with the rest of the Cosmere if you want to work in characterization/worldbuilding from other Cosmere books.) Trying to track down her family?

If you're interested in Shallan/Adolin, feel free to make it shippy, but I'm not interested in poly-shipping for this request. I subscribe to (and enjoy) the theory that Shallan is pregnant when we see her last, so I'd be happy with an OC kid showing up, but no need to include that if it's not something you're interested in.

It would also be neat to see more from Shallan's journals/sketchbooks/research during canon. Assignments she completed for Jasnah in Kharbranth? More of the spanreed notes from when she was "texting" Adolin in his self-imposed jail term? Research articles about the Radiants or Unmade?

I'm not super interested in Shallan's alter egos, so I'd prefer if they weren't a focus (mentions are fine).

Maybe another incident with different POVs on the same event, whether it be future!Cherry interweaving his voice with present!Cherry or just the contrast between different voices in people's respective diaries/letters home? (Doesn't have to be limited to the requested characters, outside POV from other crew is also great!) Letters they wrote to each other after the return party turned back, for dramatic irony and sadness?

For the tag "books and articles" in particular I'm imagining canon-divergence AUs. Everyone lives and Wilson gets to write nerdy research papers about the penguin eggs? The Winter Journey ends in tragedy, and maybe that changes the approach the polar party takes? Atkinson leads the group to search for Campbell's party in late 1912 and the world doesn't find out for years (or ever?) how close Scott et. al got? (Any of these premises could also work for other formats, of course!)

As usual, all of this is optional, anything about these fandoms/relationships will be great. Thanks for creating for me!
