I've agreed to write a regular article for my work newsletter, audience of about 40.

Here's the first draft of my first piece ).

I figured I like these visualisations well enough to share them a little more widely.

It's a little quiet at work so far, so I've been sending pretty things to people - a recruitment infographic to a couple of colleagues who help out with our assessment centres, a picture of a cheese wheel to the people I was out with last night and a guardian article about social analytics to my team.

I thought I'd share these maps with you all, then. They're pretty.

The 14th February, a day for people to celebrate all kinds of loving relationships and for money to be made.

I like this collection of infographics which show lots of different stats about Valentine's Day. Like the origins of the millions of flowers which are sold and the inequity between the amount of money which men spend on women compared to the other way around.

I don't think I've ever been in a relationship on Valentine's. It's so normal to ignore it that I've been surprised, this year, by how much more it's been mentioned around me. I can't put my finger on what's different. Maybe just living in the city where there are actual shops with chocolates, flowers and cards on display ....

... that the population distribution in the US was so unbalanced.

What is the very bright country just above Australia if you let this run?

I'd identify it as Indonesia, but I wouldn't have guessed that Indonesians liked to tweet so much.

If you have ten minutes and have any interest in data or maps or pretty things or the USA, then this is well worth your time.

An aside to my job just now is to look into different ways of visualising data and the guy who used to do it left me over 50 blogs to read through and then follow regularly. I've read some incredible things so far (like the man who programmed an algorithm to help sensitively arrange the names on the 9/11 memorial walls) and I'm only on blog 2. There may be more of these to come, if you're interested, or even if you're not, just for me to remember.
