Red border on comment field does not work in Chromium based browsers unless unfocused

When there are too few or too many characters in a comment "Your message" field, the character count turns red to indicate this, and the box border turns from black to red. This is what it looks like in Firefox:

New comment box in Firefox, with 7/15 in red and the box border in red

In Chromium (and presumably other Chromium based browsers such as Chrome), the character count turns red but the box border remains black:

New comment box in Chromium, with 7/15 in red but the box border in black

The red box border does work in Chromium, but not while the text field is focused. Only if you click elsewhere on the page does the box border show as red:

New comment box in Chromium, with 7/15 in red and the box border in red

This seems to be slightly improved

I tested this again on 5 February 2026 and there is now a very subtle red border in Chromium while the field is still focused, inside the existing blue border, but it is significantly less noticeable than the thicker red border visible when the field is unfocused. It is also significantly less noticeable than the red border in Firefox when the field is still focused. It is sufficiently fine that I would still describe the border as blue if I wasn't looking closely for this purpose.

Video of behaviour in Chrome Comparing the "Your message" field with sufficient characters (thick blue border when focused, fine grey border when unfocused) with the "Your message" field with insufficient characters (thick blue border with an inner very subtle hint of red when focused, thick red border when unfocused).

Is this still happening? (I remember a PR where I thought we fixed this, but I might be confusing it... (3 comments)
