I stand corrected.

The Pledge of Allegiance was first published in 1892. The "under God" was added by Congress in 1954 to draw a sharper distinction between the U.S. and those godless Soviets.

Corrections from a really excellent opinion/editorial piece in the Sunday NY Times by Arthur Schlesinger Jr. He also mentions that Theodore Roosevelt did not want "In God We Trust" printed on coins and bills because he felt it would cheapen religion. Congress overruled him and mandated that the slogan be included. In 1943, the Supreme Court ruled that children could not be forced to say the Pledge of Allegiance, a ruling celebrated by Americans at the time. And who could accuse the WWII generation of being unpatriotic??

I am optimistic about the new African Union, despite the presence of Qaddafi and Mugabe at its inception.

I'm not very optimistic, but I'd be inclined to be more optimistic because those two are in it. Pressure from fellow Africans might be more successful than pressure from the imperialists.

Good point. I was encouraged to read that Kofi Annan had a few sharp words of rebuke for Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe. The madness of King Robert- forbidding farming as the country falls into a massive famine.
