For the first time today, I realized I didn't really explain the Egyptian art exhibit. I saw it the same day as the Silk Road festival, otherwise they are unrelated. The official name is "The Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt" and it's at the National Gallery of Art here in Washington. I'm still thinking about getting a scarab amulet to protect my heart. Using new technologies, they've determined that the lapis lazuli in some Egyptian tombs came from present-day Afghanistan, which means that trade along the Silk Road had been going on long before the Europeans coveted spices and silks.
Yes, so today I am staying home sick. It rained the entire day down in Virginia Beach. Michael had signed up for two bike races and didn't feel good about his performance in either. It was a tough day for both of us. I didn't bring an umbrella or rain coat so I just stayed damp all day, aggravating that sore throat.
The best thing about the Tour de France is that it is getting Michael interested in France. We both sit and watch, but we see two different things. He sees the race, the tactics, the competitors. I see little towns, little cars, boulangeries (bakeries). We each run our own stream of commentary, trying to get the other to appreciate the spectacle we see.

Sorry your throat continued to feel bad this weekend. I spent a couple of hours last week looking up Roman mines and Sumerian carvings. Fascinating to see gems and stone traced to specific mines and quarries. The Tour de France has so much to take in besides the racing footage..

What has driven all this interest in ancient art? You were looking at pre-Columbian stuff last week, right? Did you hear about the newest find in Africa, a small piece of stone with geometric scratches?

I'll look that up, curious, thanks. All the art, dunno, always liked pottery, brooch pins, lamps, Egyptian objects, Old Iranian carvings. I guess I should drastically up my Sports TV viewing to regain a manly man status..

So sorry, and then the Rain

Yes, I could hardly believe it myself. I have seen quick summer storms, but the slow, heavy pounding of yesterday was new to me.

wondering if I'll have to carry a grenade for the Taliban to get 3 meals and a cot in prison and land that way to get through retirement. All this noise in Britain about mandatory pensions, renting out rooms, ways to survivie in The Golden Years. I may have to snag one of those North Dakota churches. 500 abandoned how much does it cost to train ship one to California? Are you still honking and coating the throat with treatments?

unfortunately I am still honking. I haven't done much in the way of remedies other than drinking lots of fluids. I think I'm in denial; I don't want to be sick in July.

The worst will be if you have to leave the North Dakota churches where they are in order to use them. Retirement is lonely enough- retirement in North Dakota must feel particularly punishing.

Ana Voog was musing on-line in her journal about buying a $10,000 house in North Dakota. Not an option that crosses my mind much I must say!!
