I find myself getting stressed about the coming week. I can't blame the insomnia entirely on this cold. I wonder if it was wise to take on another literacy student. Too late now, I guess.

Going back to Stony Brook will be uncomfortable. I made enemies of former housemates by not wanting to live with them until the end of our lease; I found people to take my place but they were not people that my former housemates liked. Some of their reasons for disliking my replacements were petty ("she ate my cereal!") but some were legitimate ("she left a lot of trash that we had to pay someone to haul away"). The unfortunate thing was that they seemed to think I had picked awful people to replace me on purpose, and so they would bitch to me about the new housemate(s). And of course, with my tendency to take the blame for other people's unhappiness, I absorbed it all like a sponge. I wonder if they'll still avoid me. Probably. Yet another thing I can't really do anything about, but I dread it anyway.

Why are you going back there? The thing to do is adopt the 'devil-may-care' attitude. Maybe they'll be impressed by your post-graduate achievements. Remember, Science is no slouch magazine. So even if they have all won the Nobel Prize, you are right up there. You have the power to fuck up their CVs!

I'm going back for a friend's dissertation defense. I doubt they'll be impressed with my jobs; my first job out of graduate school was with the National Science Foundation. I came back for a friend's defense and had to listen to at least two or three rants on why the NSF was a stupid, myopic agency. I expect no less criticism of Science.

So go on the attack. What stupid, myopic (or greedy and immoral) organisations are they working for? You could turn it into fun!

There are a few that are funded by the NSF. A lot of the professors at Stony Brook languish with little or no funding, which is what makes their opinions so caustic. If you listen to them long enough, you might be convinced that everyone in the Department of Ecology and Evolution deserves MacArthur "genius" awards.

Yeah, so they never even got to publish in that crappy magazine you work for! I suppose they will tell you that even Nature is beneath them?

Nature's probably all right, since I don't work there. If I had made the unfortunate mistake of leaving Stony Brook to work for Nature, that would be another story...

You're talking yourself into a no-win situation here ;)

If I were you I'd try being really offensive! But wait until your friend's defence is done!!!

Mentally I'm much healthier now than I was the last time I visited, so maybe I will be able to have some fun with them. And I won't be able to drink a lot of wine to compensate for their lack of charm either, because I've got to drive to NYC afterward.

That's good - it'll keep your wits sharp, though wine might loosen your inhibitions a bit!

Driving?
