I took the advice of a few friends and downloaded Quicken. True to form, I haven't found it easy to use or intuitive. I've got almost a month's worth of expenses in it, and I confess the geek in me likes having data and charts. No surprises yet- housing and medical compose 75% of my expenses. I don't see those chunks getting smaller any time soon, either.

Regardless, I still hope to take a few trips this year. I've nixed a spring trip to San Antonio because I'll need that money to pay my health insurance deductible. So I'm left with:

-Raleigh-Durham area, April (definite- Beth's wedding)
-Chicago, May (David and I are trying to see if we can go together.)
-Alaska, July or August (I just found out an aunt I haven't seen since high school graduation is being treated for lung cancer. Also, David has friends there.)
-San Antonio, probably September (mom's 60th birthday)
-Dallas-Ft. Worth, October or November (depending on the timing of the S.A. trip)

Five trips. That's really a lot for a lady who cries poor. And except for the wedding, I haven't counted road trips. David and I keep talking about going back to New York City, I still want to see Pittsburgh, and we have a lot of places where we'd like to go camping.

Definitely let me know if you're coming to Chicago. I'd love to meet you!

Absolutely! I'm trying to get David to sit down and check his work travel schedule for May. I've seen some great deals, so even if he can't make it I may go alone.

I'd love to! Part of me would love to come back in the fall (for the apples and changing leaves) but another part of me doesn't want to wait that long.

Raleigh-Durham is a great area.

Chicago in May will be wonderful!

I loved Alaska, although I am sorry to hear about your aunt, and I know that tinges it a bit.

San Antonio!

DFW in late October is the best time to be there.

The good thing is that even if you only make 2 or 3 you'll still have had a great travel year.

You're so right about not needing all those trips for a good travel year. DFW is high on the priority list; Richard reminds me every time we talk that I haven't visited in a very long time.

when you're in nc, maybe we can orchestrate a meet up!
alaska in august, nice. though i regret to hear the reason for the visit.

i use quick books at work and it's kindof a pain, but completely worth it.

August is probably the only time of year I can survive Alaska. I'm looking forward to it- I've never been anywhere near that part of the country.

I think David and I will be back in TN to visit his mom at least once this year, so if we can't meet in NC perhaps we can meet in Knoxville.

When you come to DFW, we will have to see if we can get together for dinner or something! :)

Yes, please! I'd love to hear more about your classes, both the ones you teach and the ones for graduate school.

I'm going to trump you. I've got Kuala Lumpur in August, Naples in September and Cambodia in December. Also Byron Bay in April (road trip up the coast). Only the last one is vacation. The downside of the others is that they're work, the upside is that I don't have to pay the airfare.

One day I'm going to take the Alaska Marine Highway and visit Cuba, but it won't be 2007!

Okay, I'm officially jealous! I'm probably not leaving the country this year.

Don't forget a tour of the lower 48 states of the U.S. in the "someday" trips!

All 48 of them ?! No I don't forget.

Nah, you can skip a lot of them. Kansas, for instance. :)

Thanks. Every time I look at travel to the US it seems overwhelming - too much choice!
