Jan. 2nd, 2007 10:43 amWe got an unexpected four-day weekend; on Friday, the news came that we'd be closed today because of Ford's funeral (we typically follow the federal government on closures). I'm feeling less bitter about having to do all of today's work on Friday, when we had the usual skeleton crew for the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.
My mom's husband gave me Christmas money, so Saturday I set out for my favorite thrift stores. Each store was jammed with both donors and shoppers. I've never seen anything like it and eventually realized that it was the last chance for tax-deductible contributions in 2006. I've never asked for a receipt for donations, and I felt sorry for the harried workers trying to keep track of people and donations. At the Goodwill store, a full-size van was packed to the brim with black garbage bags; naturally the driver wanted a receipt. At another store they'd given up estimating the value of each donation. The workers just handed out blank receipts.
The big news is that I'm finally sleeping in the room I decided would be my bedroom three (and a half) years ago: David and I moved furniture into the front bedroom yesterday. I think it will help my sleeping habits to sleep in a different room from the one with the computer. I've spent entirely too much time half-hypnotized in front of my monitor when I should've been sleeping.
The coming weeks will be busy with reorganizing, cleaning, and clearing all the stuff I've hoarded over the years.
cakmpls recently asked what her LJ friends collect, and I think I had the longest list: 70s Tupperware, vintage fabric, vintage uncut sewing patterns, sewing books, old kitchen tools, and almost anything related to microbiology. [I should say that I'm not really a collector, or if I am I'm a really crappy one; I'd much rather peruse dusty shelves and boxes than use eBay. I think I'm just harboring an ancient gathering instinct. I might've been okay in a hunter-gatherer society. Er, assuming that society didn't need to me to gather anything of practical use.]
