I received a thank-you letter for the Texas wedding that begins thus [all spelling and grammar sic]:

Dear friends and family,
I am reminded today of the story of the transfiguration. With his best friends, Jesus went to the top of a mountain and was transformed and conversed with some of the great prophets. Peter wanted to stay there on the mountain, set up some tents, and live in this amazing moment. Jesus knew, though, that the mountain wasn't meant for living, but rather is to inspire and energize; the mountain was to sustain them for the journey ahead. It is the mountain, I think, that gave Jesus the courage to pray "not my will, but yours, be done," and gave Peter the serenity to stretch out his arms and be led where he'd rather not go.

It is the evening after the wedding as a right this. The reception is over; the presents are opened; weary travelers are making their way home. In short, we are coming down the mountain. But make no mistake: it is the mountain that you created for us yesterday.

Now, I'm just a lowly atheist, but isn't comparing yourself with Jesus somewhat heretical? And saying your wedding was like Jesus's meditation is just ... odd. Is someone going to be crucified in 30 days? I'm mildly flattered the groom considered us guests to be like prophets, but I also wonder if he gets out much.

I know I'm not the most tolerant person, but I enjoyed the church wedding: the amens, the candles, the organ music, and whatnot. My tolerance doesn't extend to a whole page of single-space typewritten musings about the similarities between you and Jesus.
