U. S. Coast Guard Domestic Icebreaking – Operational Scenarios

The United States Coast Guard plays a critical role in maintaining safe and efficient navigation on the Great Lakes during winter, when waterways of the Marine Transportation System – our Nation’s maritime highways – often freeze, hindering commercial shipping traffic and creating hazards for mariners. Task Description

You are the USNIC liaison to the USCG detachment for the Great Lakes and have been asked by the USCG Commander for your predictions for ice cover for the next three days. You will use satellite-based icechart information from the USNIC for the preceding three weeks (data will be formatted as JPGgraphics, geo-referenced netCDFs, and shapefiles.); weather forecast data including surface air temperature and winds; and information on primary shipping routes.
