Sanding! In less humidity today!

So I didn't end up doing any work when I got up to feed the cats, I was too pancake, but it was okay! Because! It rained all day, more or less. Not much, but enough that the actual air was a lot drier! (Would've been extra annoying if I was working outside, of course, but as I haven't been... Lucky day for me!)

I also did manage to get the rest of the sanding done, as planned! \o/ It more or less went as expected, hahaha, which is always nice.

Tomorrow will be... hmm. It'll depend on the weather actually. I need to get more dust masks - I thought I had enough, but it turned out that the ones in the second packet had elastic that has degraded badly so they're uh. Better than nothing buuuuuut not good - so if it's not raining I might do that first? Those I know they have at the closest hardware store, so might as well do that first thing when I'm still clean from my shower.

Otherwise, will be filling and stripping, tomorrow! Theoretically I could also get some sanding done, but I doubt I'll have time. There's quite a bit of stripping to do, though I think the filling will mainly be annoying due to having to move the ladder around so much, rather than time consuming. I think I'm getting better at it! Hopefully...

Sanding begins!

This is entirely sanding-related babble. )

Not a lot other than that, really. It was super humid today - my hair was wringable again - but I still managed three work sessions, so probably about three hours? Which doesn't sound like a lot but it took me a stupid long time to recover each time. :/ Humidity is not my friend!!! :(

Looks like it's gonna be stupid humid tomorrow, too, so should try and get in a couple of work sessions in the morning/early afternoon. Maybe get up, feed cats/let out chooks, do a session? Will try that, I think. Supposed to be the least humid part of the day. (Still over 30% though. Ugh, so gross. But it's at 89% right now, so... yeah. Worth trying.)

Anyway! Now is naptime, yessss! >:

Filling done! For now.

I did a LOT of filling today, and I think it's all done! Or, at least, it's all done until after I sand some things back, there are definitely bits that'll need extra filler and places that may or may not depending on how the sanding goes. Still! It was a lot of stuff to get done, and I'm pleased I managed it all! :3

I also baked! Three loaves of the choco zucchini bread, nomnomnom. (Two are going to be frozen, if I want more after I'm done with one loaf I can make more!) I definitely shouldn't've waited to make them until like 2:30, but, well. Sometimes we make very stupid decisions, that's just. How it is. Yes.

Tomorrow I get to try and figure out how the fuck the black chook got out of the run - she was perched on top of it napping when I went to put them to bed. I suspect the problem is she is very bored, which is. Not something I can really do much about. What with the foxes. :/

Also, sanding. Tomorrow is the return of Doing A Sanding, bleh. Important, but ugh the having to be so very careful and wear a mask and so much vacuuming ugh, hate it.

Forward movement. Hopefully.

Sooo Sibling dropped in this morning, and, well. Apparently the roof is super uneven - I can't see it, but we all know what my fucking vision is like. :/ So rather than waste time fretting about it I gave it another coat. With the goddamn roller. Hopefully that fixes it. If not, I'm probably gonna have to buy more paint. :|

I did uh A LOT of home improvement rambling today. Mostly because I did A Number Of Things and want to talk about all of them. )

I ALSO spent some time rummaging under the house looking for some lights my father apparently has, that should light up the room better (particularly for painting), but could I find them? No. I did, however, find some things that REALLY need to not be under the house - some empty bags that should be cleaned and stored inside so they don't degrade (two of them are leather!), clothes pegs that might as well be somewhere they can be USED, some stuff that I suspect is Just Goddamn Rubbish at this point, etc. etc. So at least it wasn't totally wasted effort, just annoying

Anyway I started the last work session a bit after 11, and then the next time I noticed the clock it was after 2 somehow (I was definitely not working most of that time! I only did a little bit over an album's worth of work!) (Daft Punk's Discovery today, which is good working music), which is why I'm still up this late. Whoops! >>;; Anyway, bed now yes. Sleeps are good for you!

Well I tried!

I DID go up to the hardware shop this morning!

Unfortunately they didn't have the thing I needed. Because they don't do paint, they also don't do more than very basic sanding stuff. For some reason. (Even the guy who worked there was confused by thing!)

So I need to go to the other one, which is fine! Annoying, because it's the opposite direction, but fine. My ankle wasn't up to it today, one thing was Enough, but it's already feeling better than it did this morning, so tomorrow should be fine.

Sibling's dropping in tomorrow morning, and should help me learn how to use the saw so I can actually cut things when I need to from now on, which is good! :D

In actual room work related news, I went around and cleared out the tops of the picture rails! This involved using a chisel in a couple of places, which is a New Experience for me, but it worked fine! :D So rare that theoretical knowledge translates to practical knowledge so easily! Am pleased. I also did a round of filling, and put tape on the edge between the cornice and the roof.

Unfortunately, when peeling back the tape to reposition in a couple of places, the paint just. Came off. :| :| :| Sooo I'm gonna have to redo a bunch of the edging! I'm wondering if the filler I've been using is a problem - it's SUPER crumbly once it dries, and I have a sinking feeling that that's what's breaking, not the actual paint layers, since the stuff that peeled off has white on it, which is probably the undercoat. Since I have to go to the hardware shop ANYWAY I'll ask'm about it. I absolutely do not want to have to redo any of the filling, buuuut I might have to, sigh. I was PLANNING on doing a second round of filling after I finished the tape but given that I decided not to. :/ Still, I did get some stuff done, which is nice!

I figured out what I did to my ankle!

Unsurprisingly, it was very dumb..

[01:34] Tyger: I uh. Hmm. Saying 'I fell off a ladder' is accurate but also extremely misleading.
[01:34] Azremodehar: omg
[01:35] Tyger: What happened was I was pulling a nail out of the wall (there were a few from the old windows the carpenters just... left there? IDK why), and since it was in the middle of the room there was nothing to brace against, so when the nail came out I went POP!

Fell on my feet, just landed kinda hard 'cause I wasn't expecting it. So that's probably what fucked my ankle up.
[01:36] Azremodehar: ahhhhhhh that makes sense, yeah
[01:36] Azremodehar: I can see it

Anyway! Today I also didn't do much, because holy shit the humidity I hates it, uuugh. (Also while ankle is seriously improved, still not 100% and I don't want to push it.)

I did, however, get the wood filler out and fill in the nail holes in my new windows that I could find/reach without the ladder or taking the windows out. I think I got them all, but some of them are tiny - probably staples, rather than actual nails - so I'll have another look later. There might also be some on the top I can't see without the ladder, though I did get the ones in the top architraves that're facing out.

So I feel a bit better about having done something, even if it's nothing that needed to be done for a while. Doesn't hurt to have done, though!

Anyway, I'm actually feeling cold and have a blanket on my lap, which I think means the humidity has been chased out of the house - it started raining this afternoon which cut it outside pretty quick, but, well, air exchange takes a while etc. etc. - so I think I'mma just. Go bed now. Yes. :3

Hopefully both my ankle and the humidity will continue to be better in the morning, and I'll finally go to the hardware store! >: Yes!

Today did... not go as planned. Not even a little.

Ankle still hurts - it was really bad during the day, though it's started to feel a bit better in the last couple of hours, so hopefully it'll be back to normal tomorrow. But even walking around the house was difficult, so I didn't even think about going anywhere!

And also, in the warmest part of the afternoon, the power went off. :| Which was very worrying! Because food! But luckily it got fixed before anything defrosted, it was just uh. A much longer wait than I was expecting. (I mean. We get power flickers semi-regularly! But actual downtime is unusual.)

HOPEFULLY this means that the scheduled maintenance downtime on Wednesday will be skipped, but... Well. We'll see, I guess! At least that one won't be surprising, though. (Also, this is the one good thing about having a gas stove. Can still make food even if the power is out. Then again, once we get a battery setup hopefully it'll mean that general power outages don't affect us either... but we'll see how that pans out in practice.)

Anyway, did very little at all today. Slept a lot! Played a stupid room escape game and some Terraria, read fic, and mostly just kept off my feet. Zero work on my room, alas, but ankle recovering is MUCH more important.

Okay so it's not QUITE ten years since I broke my ankle, but it's getting damn close. And the weather seems?? Stable??? It's hotter than yesterday but not by a huge amount I don't think, and as far as I can tell humidity doesn't make my ankle unhappy. The rest of me, but not the ankle.

So why in the fuck is my ankle aching like a bitch, when it's not actively painful??? Very weird, very uncomfortable, do not recommend. :|

Other than that extremely annoying mystery... went shopping in the early afternoon, and finally got fruit bread yaaaaaay I have missed it. Though the zucchini bread IS also extremely good, so I can't really complain. Also got the ingredients I need to make more zucchini bread! :D Plus a couple of other things, I ended up getting a lot more than I anticipated. But that's fine, means I don't need to go food shopping again for a while! :D

DO need to go to the hardware store, need a different kind of sander for the cornices, 'cause of all the curves, but that wasn't ever gonna happen today, what with it being Sunday and the shop closed. XD;;

Multiplayer Terraria this afternoon, which was fun! After that is when I started feeling shitty, though - some of it I think in retrospect is humidity catching me unawares, but also This Goddamn Ankle. I did have a nap and then finish the first-round cleaning of the upper walls, though!

I'll see what my ankle is like tomorrow - if it's doing okay I'll probably go to the hardware store and get the stuff from there, and otherwise tomorrow will likely be dedicated to 1) getting some gunk out from the picture rails - looks like someone dropped filler in and then just. Left it there. So that was probably my father doing a dumb - and otherwise making sure things are in a decent enough state for 2) Filler Time 2: Now With More Difficult Physics. (Because picture rails. Lots of cracks/peeling paint at the back of the picture rails, buuuuut do no want to do a dumb and leave them unusable for hanging pictures off of! So that'll be. A process!!!)

Anyway, now is time for naps, and hopefully ankle will be feeling better in the morning!

Back to cleaning

So much wall cleaning today. So many cleaning cloths needing washing! (Luckily for me and my ability to keep going without washing every two seconds we have an absolute fuckton of cleaning cloths. In this household we do not simply throw out no-longer-wearable clothes etc! At least until the cleaning cloths shelf space is overflowing again...) Also may have kind of destroyed the corner of one of the window architraves by accident. >>;; Trying to get old nails out of the wall: more difficult than I expected! Well, the first three were easy enough... May have to get Sibling to try, given our comparative upper body strengths.

Anyway not a whole lot other than that, really. Did play some Terraria, which was nice. Mostly just a clean-flop-clean-flop-clean-flop cycle. Which isn't the worst way to do it, but is very boring...

tyger: Random pattern from the Re:coded Ultimania, messed with until it's white on a black background. (Kingdom Hearts - pattern)

Sooo the ceiling IS done! :D :D :D THIS PLEASES ME GREATLY, yessss.

As a consequence, I didn't actually do any WORK in my room today, so I feel like I did nothing. This is a lie my brain is telling me, because my brain is stupid.

Fuck you brain, have some goddamn evidence )

I also played some Terraria, which was pretty good! Coming to the conclusion that I might just not be good enough to beat Skeletron in Master Mode, which is annoying, but I've changed to Summoner armour and will try and beat it with keep-away summon-and-whips tactics. Yes. Oooh, I should get a sentry, too. That would be an excellent idea.

BUT FIRST GO TO SLEEP did I just get distracted for half an hour on the Terraria wiki yes, yes I did. :|

So as is usual the day after I have a very productive day, did NOT have much in the way of ability to can today. Alas! Is annoying, but also not a surprise.

But I did do two rounds of touch ups and I THINK it's done now. Gonna wait to see it in natural light, but HOPEFULLY....

If that's the case then tomorrow will be all with the cleaning and the filling and the scrubbing and etc. etc. and I'll probably go and get the paint, too. Didn't have the brain for it today, alas.

One of the things I DID use my brain points on was freaking out once I got up from my morning nap, because there was a car! In the driveway!! A CAR!! That I didn't know!!!!!

Anyway there was a lot of flailing around and ringing the council and etc., before I actually went outside to look at it, as opposed to through the window, and it turns out it was my uncle's car. He was visiting my auntie in hospital, and parked there because holy shit hospital parking is a nightmare. So it was fine in the end, thankfully! Still, did use up quite a bit of energy on that, so it's probably no surprise I didn't have enough to cook curry this evening. Welp. Tomorrow, I guess!!! The chicken is definitely defrosted enough now, at least...

Surprisingly productive day!

Given that I didn't actually DO anything except a load of washing on before sometime after 5pm, I'm surprised at how much stuff I got done today!

(I slept most of the afternoon, because it was the kind of oppressive heat that makes you want to cry if you have to do anything athletic in it. Also the paint specifically says to not use it if it's over 35 degrees, and it was... 34.8 on the BOM app. So you know. Close enough to not want to risk it!)

Anyway here's a list: Long list is long. )

I was kinda considering going to bunnings again for the rest of the paint (and some advice for blocking off the massive gaps down the sides of the bookshelves), but I'm glad I didn't - it started raining about the time I woulda left, and it didn't stop for several hours. Maybe tomorrow, instead!

Either way tomorrow morning will be peering at the ceiling and hoping to not fine more places that need more paint. If I don't find any I guess it'll be time to peel off the tape, reapply it to the other side of the line, and start scrubbing the cornices and tops of the walls! I think I'm gonna work downwards in sections, so the next bit will be the cornices and the tops of the walls above the picture rails. Just makes it easier on my brain to have smaller sections to focus on, you know?

Anyway, time to hide the zucchini bread from Sushi and take a nap, yes! :D Also figure out where I put my phone, I should really make sure I don't have any messages before I sleep...

[staff profile] denise posting in [site community profile] dw_news
Back in August of 2025, we announced a temporary block on account creation for users under the age of 18 from the state of Tennessee, due to the court in Netchoice's challenge to the law (which we're a part of!) refusing to prevent the law from being enforced while the lawsuit plays out. Today, I am sad to announce that we've had to add South Carolina to that list. When creating an account, you will now be asked if you're a resident of Tennessee or South Carolina. If you are, and your birthdate shows you're under 18, you won't be able to create an account.

We're very sorry to have to do this, and especially on such short notice. The reason for it: on Friday, South Carolina governor Henry McMaster signed the South Carolina Age-Appropriate Design Code Act into law, with an effective date of immediately. The law is so incredibly poorly written it took us several days to even figure out what the hell South Carolina wants us to do and whether or not we're covered by it. We're still not entirely 100% sure about the former, but in regards to the latter, we're pretty sure the fact we use Google Analytics on some site pages (for OS/platform/browser capability analysis) means we will be covered by the law. Thankfully, the law does not mandate a specific form of age verification, unlike many of the other state laws we're fighting, so we're likewise pretty sure that just stopping people under 18 from creating an account will be enough to comply without performing intrusive and privacy-invasive third-party age verification. We think. Maybe. (It's a really, really badly written law. I don't know whether they intended to write it in a way that means officers of the company can potentially be sentenced to jail time for violating it, but that's certainly one possible way to read it.)

Netchoice filed their lawsuit against SC over the law as I was working on making this change and writing this news post -- so recently it's not even showing up in RECAP yet for me to link y'all to! -- but here's the complaint as filed in the lawsuit, Netchoice v Wilson. Please note that I didn't even have to write the declaration yet (although I will be): we are cited in the complaint itself with a link to our August news post as evidence of why these laws burden small websites and create legal uncertainty that causes a chilling effect on speech. \o/

In fact, that's the victory: in December, the judge ruled in favor of Netchoice in Netchoice v Murrill, the lawsuit over Louisiana's age-verification law Act 456, finding (once again) that requiring age verification to access social media is unconstitutional. Judge deGravelles' ruling was not simply a preliminary injunction: this was a final, dispositive ruling stating clearly and unambiguously "Louisiana Revised Statutes §§51:1751–1754 violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, as incorporated by the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution", as well as awarding Netchoice their costs and attorney's fees for bringing the lawsuit. We didn't provide a declaration in that one, because Act 456, may it rot in hell, had a total registered user threshold we don't meet. That didn't stop Netchoice's lawyers from pointing out that we were forced to block service to Mississippi and restrict registration in Tennessee (pointing, again, to that news post), and Judge deGravelles found our example so compelling that we are cited twice in his ruling, thus marking the first time we've helped to get one of these laws enjoined or overturned just by existing. I think that's a new career high point for me.

I need to find an afternoon to sit down and write an update for [site community profile] dw_advocacy highlighting everything that's going on (and what stage the lawsuits are in), because folks who know there's Some Shenanigans afoot in their state keep asking us whether we're going to have to put any restrictions on their states. I'll repeat my promise to you all: we will fight every state attempt to impose mandatory age verification and deanonymization on our users as hard as we possibly can, and we will keep actions like this to the clear cases where there's no doubt that we have to take action in order to prevent liability.

In cases like SC, where the law takes immediate effect, or like TN and MS, where the district court declines to issue a temporary injunction or the district court issues a temporary injunction and the appellate court overturns it, we may need to take some steps to limit our potential liability: when that happens, we'll tell you what we're doing as fast as we possibly can. (Sometimes it takes a little while for us to figure out the exact implications of a newly passed law or run the risk assessment on a law that the courts declined to enjoin. Netchoice's lawyers are excellent, but they're Netchoice's lawyers, not ours: we have to figure out our obligations ourselves. I am so very thankful that even though we are poor in money, we are very rich in friends, and we have a wide range of people we can go to for help.)

In cases where Netchoice filed the lawsuit before the law's effective date, there's a pending motion for a preliminary injunction, the court hasn't ruled on the motion yet, and we're specifically named in the motion for preliminary injunction as a Netchoice member the law would apply to, we generally evaluate that the risk is low enough we can wait and see what the judge decides. (Right now, for instance, that's Netchoice v Jones, formerly Netchoice v Miyares, mentioned in our December news post: the judge has not yet ruled on the motion for preliminary injunction.) If the judge grants the injunction, we won't need to do anything, because the state will be prevented from enforcing the law. If the judge doesn't grant the injunction, we'll figure out what we need to do then, and we'll let you know as soon as we know.

I know it's frustrating for people to not know what's going to happen! Believe me, it's just as frustrating for us: you would not believe how much of my time is taken up by tracking all of this. I keep trying to find time to update [site community profile] dw_advocacy so people know the status of all the various lawsuits (and what actions we've taken in response), but every time I think I might have a second, something else happens like this SC law and I have to scramble to figure out what we need to do. We will continue to update [site community profile] dw_news whenever we do have to take an action that restricts any of our users, though, as soon as something happens that may make us have to take an action, and we will give you as much warning as we possibly can. It is absolutely ridiculous that we still have to have this fight, but we're going to keep fighting it for as long as we have to and as hard as we need to.

I look forward to the day we can lift the restrictions on Mississippi, Tennessee, and now South Carolina, and I apologize again to our users (and to the people who temporarily aren't able to become our users) from those states.

Optometrist today! Apparently my script hasn't actually changed that much??? I am SHOOKETH, I thought eyes settling down wasn't ever gonna happen to me! But hey, maybe it will!!! I'm only almost fucking fourty, omfg...

Anyway, found some nice frames, and new glasses are ordered! Let's. Not talk about how much that costs, ow. Still, will be super great to have some glasses where the fucking coating isn't flaking off! >: (Optometrist says it's a known issue with hand-ground lenses, they're just more prone to it. SIGH. Goddamn eyes, making trouble in all vision-related fields, I swear... Nah, they're not bad. Just. So fucking short sighted, bleh.)

Other than that... got food while I was out. Haven't cooked any yet, but I have it!

Also finished the second coat on the ceiling, and did a round of touch ups, too. Will need to see it in daylight to finalise it, because hoooooo boy does it change how it looks depending on light source, but it's getting there!!! >:

Ideally I'll get up and do the touch ups at kitty breakfasttime, but I'm uh not asleep yet so we'll see how awake I am in... four and a bit hours... >>;; In my defence I was playing Terraria so late because I was waiting for my hair to dry after showering and it was REALLY REALLY BOTHERING ME for some reason, so a brain-eating distraction was. Good. And I showered immediately after finishing the touch ups, so I'm not worried about showering late. It's just a bit cooler today, so it took longer to dry. Weather!!!

Anyway. Now is time for bed and naps, and we'll see how much I can get done tomorrow!

tyger: Beat, hand on his hat and laughing. (Beat - Bwahahaha)
[personal profile] tyger

I slept pmuch all morning and halfway through the afternoon, other than feeding the cats and letting the chooks out! It was GREAT. I've been sleeping like crap recently, so I definitely needed it.

Day pretty much went as planned, honestly. Except for the washing thing, it was overcast and looked like rain all day so I didn't do any washing, hahaha.

Only did one session painting, but it was a pretty long one - I didn't QUITE get the entire second coat done, I ran out of paint in the cup, but it's mostly done. I was ATTEMPTING to finish early so I could go to bed early, but uh. Yeah. That didn't happen. I made the mistake of playing some Terraria afterwards >>;;;

Anyway, will definitely get that second coat finished tomorrow, and maybe a third coat? Which is going to be more like touch ups, I think, unless it's dried CONSIDERABLY patchier than it looked.

Will probably have to do another round of touch ups on Wednesday, too; I have an optometrist appointment tomorrow afternoon, and I feel like I should have a good look at the second coat after it's dried in the daylight, as well as under the electric light. Still, who knows, might be able to get the second coat done super quickly tomorrow and have enough light to be confident in it for touch ups! Will depend, I do also want to get some actual cooking done tomorrow I have um. Very little food left right now.

But that's fine! I'll get more food tomorrow after my appointment, I've already made a list! And today was WAY less humid than yesterday, so hopefully that trend will keep up and I won't end up pancaked due to humidity when I get home...
