[In the middle of their science lecture, a note appears on Rion's desk. And by "appears" I mean its super-casually slid over by his tablemate in a super super casual way. The most casualest.]

rion im bored :(

[...Rion sort of shoots a look at Me'dan; it's a look of confusion and of mild annoyance because Rion actually kind of pays attention to classwork sometimes, okay.

He's a very, very good student. Very diligent. Even though it's kind of cool that he's GETTING NOTES and stuff...]

[Unfortunately Med'an misses the look, because he's super casually not looking at Rion at all. But when he doesn't get a note back, he is discouraged enough not to send another. Just kidding, there's another one right there. This time it's just a tic-tac-toe board. Rion can even go first!!!! Med'an is the nicest. :D ]

[...really. Tic Tac Toe.

Whatever he can play this! And narrowly avoid being looked at because he's just going to pass it along to Me'dan now and then go back to paying attention to this class because listen, Me'dan, science is Serious Business.

Seriously.]

[YAAAAY!! Rion is the best!! The note comes back quickly with Med'an's mark - but then he notices that Rion is being a Good Student and takes a moment to studiously write a note himself. Look, he is also a Good Student! :D An Okay Student. He just needs a lot of attention, okay?]

[Rion is like some sort of wizard at Tic-Tac-Toe.

Actually no it's just gonna end in a draw like any of these games do when played by competent players. The class is gonna be over soon, right? He looks up at the clock...

Ring already... it's almost lunch... :( ]

Yo, Rion!

[ when Rion wanders past this classroom, he'll get a wave and a big smile from Junko! Getting stuck with cleaning up after school is a total drag, so she'll welcome any distraction. ]

How's it going?

[It doesn't take him long to respond in a flurry of sign language - Junko actually understands it and he's much happier to be using it.]

It's going alright!

[After a moment.]

Do you need any help? [It is a total drag, and Rion likes to help - almost to a fault.]

(Sitting in the back is pretty neat! It definitely comes with its advantages, especially when you're super tired and happen to accidentally fall asleep in the middle of a lesson.

Oops.

Good thing Minako's sitting next to her pal Rion, though, right?)

[It does come with advantages! (Like the teacher not seeing when you sign with your pal at stomach level. Sometimes this is really useful, like when the one of you that can't talk wants to answer a question in class. Sometimes this is also really useful, like when you want to talk about food.)

However, Rion has noticed that Minako is asleep... and he's pretty sure that they're gonna call on her soon, since this teacher has a tendency to make sure everyone gets called on. (Well, okay, sometimes not Rion because it's like calling on Minako twice.) He could just sort of shove her or something, but she's really nice and that'd be kinda rude!

... but he needs to do something, right?

One of Rion's hands just sort of sidles over to her. He could be a bit harsher, a bit more violent, a bit more awakening-like, but he really doesn't want to do that. (That and this is a good excuse to do what he's about to do.) He reaches over, squeezes her hand once, then again a bit harder, just to see if that'll get her attention.

Too bad he can't hiss something into her ear. This will have to do.]

(The second squeeze definitely does the trick as she suddenly sits up and quickly rubs at her eyes with her knuckles. Really, since when did she start falling asleep during class?

Minako turns to Rion with an apologetic look and signs a quick:)

(With any luck, she'll have time to get back into the lesson before she's called on.)

[...well he would have liked to keep doing that but she probably wouldn't have been able to sign back and she should probably pay attention. And someone might notice that and it'd be awkward.

Oh well!]

We have study hall next period. You can sleep then!

[His tone, such that it is, is obviously teasing - something he doesn't do with a lot of people. There's still that concern, though, since he wants to ask if she got enough sleep, if something's wrong, but while a little bit of signing is tolerated from the teachers, if they're clearly having a conversation in class that tends to be... more frowned upon.

At least it's an English class and all the questions basically are about having read the assignment. ... She did do that, right?]

(If there are any hints of disappointment on his face, they go temporarily unnoticed as she focuses on his signing and smiles. He has a point! She nods to him apologetically, finally catching the concern on his face.

Before she can manage an explanation, however, Minako's promptly called on by the teacher to answer a basic plot question about the assignment.

But hey, at least she read it! Answering the question correctly is proof of that.

Yay.

Once the teacher's attention is diverted, Minako swivels to face Rion and finally signs her (lame) explanation.)

I stayed up late studying.

You should go to bed earlier... you fall asleep a lot.

[And guess who ends up waking her up/and or covering for her a lot? It's him. It helps that they end up in a lot of the same classes, because some administrator realized they were going to take a lot of the same classes anyway and just put them together so Minako could translate for him instead of having an aide or something.]

Are you sure everything's alright?

[...oh, hey! There's the bell, because really there's only so much they can get away with with talking in class, even if they are signing.

He looks so worried. (He looks worried a lot, but he looks more worried about her.)]

(Minako puts on a reassuring smile after the bell rings, nodding once more. There is a lot going on when she's not at school, but it's hardly enough for him to be so worried about her. That's what she tells herself, anyway. Rion already does enough for her as it is!

She starts to gather her things while she takes to speaking for the time being, still holding that smile.)

I'm fine! I just need to work on my time management, I think.

(There's a genuine, self-deprecating laugh bundled in there, and she stands up from her seat to look back at him.)

[Well, it's not like he has a lot else to do. When he's not cooking for himself at home, or losing himself in things -- well, at first it was just that she was there to help him, but she's someone who he can trust to listen to him, who actually seems to care when he talks about things.

Part of it is that it's easier - signing is, of course, a lot faster than writing - but she's one of the very few people who he can talk to about his home life, about how he doesn't really go out much, how he feels alone a lot. Someone he can open up to, where -- around Minako, he feels like he matters. It's a nice feeling.]

If you say so. [There's a half-smile there, but he can't help but still be a little concerned, and it creeps into his expression - even if Minako weren't good at people, Rion is readable like a goddamn book. A book with lots of pictures and not many words.

He's getting up, slinging his backpack over his back, but he's still looking at her sort of expectantly - anytime he talks, especially with her, he makes eye contact. Eye contact and being able to see body language is really important for him.]

(Oh she notices, all right. Moreover, she takes in his small, expectant look and grins back at him. Using both hands to secure the strap of the backpack resting on her shoulder, Minako leans in a little bit in his direction.

Her turn for a little friendly teasing!)

What about you, hmm? You look like you have something to tell me!

(Her finger lightly, playfully pokes at his chest until she stands up straight once more with another laugh.)

[He does, though! And he'll even try not to look nervous or awkward or anything while he asks - it's a struggle and one he's mostly, if not entirely, winning. He can walk and talk at the same time, right? Since they're headed to the same classroom for a non-class anyway.]

I was wondering who you were going to the Winter Gala with.

[This is kind of an unusual question for him in that he doesn't often ask that much about her social life. He knows she's pretty popular (and admittedly he's a little jealous of that) and that if she wanted she could basically have just about anyone to go with to a dance.

He also... doesn't really go out that much, as she probably knows. And isn't very popular. And has had the shit kicked out of him a couple times (though less, now that he hangs out with her a lot). Regardless, it's not the kind of question he normally asks, though it might just be to be polite - he asks questions like this sometimes when he's trying to make conversation and not really sure what to say, and it generally comes out like this too.]

[Waltzing along during lunch, Ryu catches the sound of Rion playing on the wind, and ends up following it. He attempts to listen while not disturbing him, but we all know how stealthy a kid with a big poof of blue hair can be.]

[Rion has heard Ryu, but he's not really used to having people listening to him, and is sort of zoning out.

As it turns out (and as Ryu may or may not be aware), Rion is really, really good at guitar.]

[Ryu saw no reason to disturb him, and so closed his eyes, gently nodding his head in time with the music. The school had its share of musicians, certainly, but Ryu felt Rion had something special about him.]

[It's when Rion finally finishes that -- well, he can't actually say something, but he'll turn and look over at Ryu, a little uncertain.

Who is this person? ... does he know them?]
