Thanks for Being Awesome

Because it's nice to let people know that we appreciate them.

In the spirit of love memes, this meme is a place to thank someone who's created something you love, or done something kind that you still remember after all this time, or who has made your fandom life (or your life in general!) better in some way.

Discord is planning a radical violation of privacy for all users.  It will require facial recognition or ID in order to escape designation as teen with account restrictions.  This is ineffective and risky.  Many people are upset by the violation of privacy because so many platforms have been hacked to extract that valuable information.

Some Discord users are already abandoning the platform and moving to Dreamwidth or others.  Please pass the word around Dreamwidth to your friends on Discord to see if this platform appeals to them.  This post has many resources for newcomers about how to use Dreamwidth..

[community profile] snowflake_challenge is hosting its Friending Meme today. This is one of the best opportunities of the year to make new friends on Dreamwidth. Use the template in that post to comment with your response.

You can also copy it onto your own blog, as I've done here. This provides a place for longer conversations if desired, so they don't clog up the main challenge, which typically runs hundreds of comments anyhow.

The [community profile] threesentenceficathon starts this Saturday, January 17. Zero pressure comment fic community, where the idea is to write 3 sentence fills for prompts that anyone can post -- the "3 sentences" part is more of a starting point that inevitably leads to creative uses of punctuation. The ficathon is open to new prompts until February 15, but the community is always open to new fills.

JANUARY 2026 BOOK: THE SPELLSHOP

[community profile] bookclub_dw has chosen The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst as our book for January.

I'll make the discussion post on January 31, 2026. If you have any discussion questions you'd like to be considered, please comment to this post
.

Looking for something new to read? This community works just like a facetime book club -- members pick a title per month, read it, and talk about it. \o/

Once upon a time, before the Internet, fans found each other through fanzines, clubs, and other means. Among the most famous was the Star Trek Welcommittee, which helped people find ways to participate in the fandom. The National Fantasy Fan Federation, which started even earlier, still has one going. The idea spread to other fandoms and beyond. A welcommittee is basically a group of volunteers who enjoy reaching out to new people and helping them connect with a given organization or subculture.  Many organizations have them, and so do some towns.

I'd like to encourage something similar for Dreamwidth. It's a way for more experienced bloggers to participate in [community profile] newcomers. We need folks who can answer questions, explain how the platform works, and help new users find things they like in hope they'll stick around. It doesn't have to be official or complicated -- just a few concepts and resources for folks to use when they meet a new user. It helps support the platform we love.

soc_puppet: A calendar page for January 2024 with emojis on various dates (Mood Theme in a Year)
[personal profile] soc_puppet
[community profile] moodthemeinayear is now open for 2026!

Have you ever wanted to create a custom mood theme, but found yourself overwhelmed by all of the potential moods you'd have to make? Mood Theme in a Year has you covered! The community assigns three moods a week for you to design graphics for, with regular week long breaks. Draw, screencap, and/or animate your way to the custom mood theme of your dreams, with a community by your side to support and encourage you.

Not up for a full year/132 images? No problem! That's just the Maximum Track, which runs from January 1st through (roughly) the end of the year. If you want to make a smaller mood theme, you can follow the Minimum Track (18 images) or the Medium Track (34 images), or maybe somewhere between one of those and the Maximum Track. The goal of this community is to create a custom mood theme that you like, at a pace that works for you.

For those who missed it: While uploading and using a custom mood theme is restricted to paid accounts, as of December 2025, creating at least 18 mood graphics can earn you Dreamwidth points! Now, even if a paid account is out of your budget, you can still have the chance to upload and use your own custom mood theme. Read this post for more details.

The first three moods of 2026 are now up; thanks for reading, and I hope to see you there!

[site community profile] dw_maintenance reports in this post that imports from LiveJournal may be slow.  Russia has altered the terms of LiveJournal again in ways that may shut out many users.

Regrettably, Dreamwidth does not offer a way to sort posts by language so that people can choose to view the one(s) they speak and turn off what they don't.  I have found very few communities with a language focus, but they are listed here.

3 for the Memories' 2025 session will be open for posts on January 3, 2026 and will run for 3 weeks until January 24. Event participation is as follows:

1) Three photos only per person during each annual session. Members are encouraged to discuss the reason for their choices.

2) Photos can be hosted at Dreamwidth or elsewhere, and should not be larger than 800 px width or height.

3) All three photos should be in the same post. Cut tags should be placed after the first photo.

3 for the Memories is not a competition, and entries are not being judged. Rather, participants are encouraged to share photos they took in 2025 that they find meaningful in some way or which represent how they experienced the year.

soooo ...

google told me that dw allows users to have multiple journals under one account with easy switching between them. this would be so ideal for my compartmentalization dream & would allow me to start writing more.

but i can't find it in the faq.

any idea where to find this info or directions on how to use this feature? is it even real? D:

also happy holidays y'all!

I really like looking at the "codes" made for playlists and roleplay blogs like the ones on [profile] criscodes. But I don't have a good baseline for how CSS and HTML can be effectively used inside of posts on Dreamwidth. Cohost, obviously, was infamously permissive with what you could do with CSS; most "modern style" social media, meanwhile, doesn't even really let you insert tables or div elements to format, limiting in-post html/css to just some very bare bones text formatting at most.

Are there any tutorials or guides for how to learn to develop your own aesthetic playlist/muselist/ac tracker/muse inbox/etc "codes" from scratch? I'd really love to brush up on my fanciest css without necessarily editing my blog theme every time to do it.
