Homo erectus fossils in East Asia rewrite the timeline of human migration

A new analysis dates three Homo erectus skulls from central China to about 1.77 million years ago, making them the oldest securely dated hominin fossils in eastern Asia.

That older age shifts the arrival of early humans in the region back by roughly 600,000 years and compresses the timeline of how quickly our ancestors spread across Eurasia.
[---8<---]
The same layer holds stone tools and animal remains, tying the skulls to a specific moment nearly 1.8 million years ago rather than the younger dates long cited.

Health and snow

Sick today. Managed to finish grocery shopping before I got too exhausted. Now I'm hungry for some of the food I bought, but I don't have much appetite.

Another 10 inches of snow is coming tonight. I'm watching the flurries while I draw in bed. They look lovely. I feel bad that some of the acorns I'd saved for the squirrels got moldy. I had 3 batches and 2 were fine. I should have kept them in a paper bag. Live and learn!

The hawthorn tree has been picked clean. I think we need a couple more of those! Well, it keeps putting up runners so I guess it'll be easy to end up with more hawthorns.

I'm on a scene where Maurice is making pizza while wearing his biker jacket. Because he may be a domestic goddess, but he's still a guy.

Movies and studying

Seems like free time is not good for my activity as I am active only once I need to study lol.

I am spending my free time at home, so I've been eating, sleeping, watching movies and seeing friends and family. I haven't really read my books much (though I've read a lot fanfiction now that I think about it).

Anyway, let's quickly go through what I watched.

All Knives Out movies
I've watched the first one before, but now I had to watch all three with family (my father puts on a movie and you get no choice If you want to watch or not). We went in reverse order for some reason. So Wake up Dead Man was first. I think this one might be my favourite, but all in all these movies are fun, but not spectacular. Maybe I'm just too used to my Poirot and Midsomer Murders. Anyway, Josh O'Connor carries the movie for me and once again reminds me that I need to watch La Chimera. On the other hand, these are the type of movies that are more fun once you watch them with others, so it was fun. (what an eloquent review, like I've never expressed an opinion before)

Avatar: The Way of Water
What can I say, I am partially watching this for horny reasons, but I enjoyed the movie as a whole as well. Tbh, I was mostly enjoying the part when they move and need to adapt to new environment as a family. The teen shenanigans, fitting in, learning a different way of life. My bread and jam. Whatever is happening on the grand scale is interesting to me in the way it impacts individuals. There were some questionable hairstyles though.

I did also once again watch the
Grand Budapest Hotel. I was telling my mother about it, and since I've been through hell (the exam period) she offered to watch it since I like it so much. She liked it very much, while my father, who joined us halfway, proceeded to sit silently and sigh loudly from time to time.

I also watched a modern classic of my country's cinematography, but I am not the most comfortable disclosing where I live so early lol sorry.

Once again nothing special or deep from me lol.

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy and cold.

I fed the birds. I've seen a large flock of sparrows plus one female and two male cardinals separately.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 2/22/26 -- I planted 3 peonies 'Sorbet Mixed' under the apricot tree. The mix includes white, light pink, and dark pink. These cost $14.98, so about $5 a root. That's a great bargain for peonies, which average $20-30 each and catalogs and the high end is downright exorbitant. So if you want peonies, look for cheap ones at home or garden stores this time of year. Due to the unseasonal warmth, the ground here is unfrozen, so I was able to plant them immediately. \o/

EDIT 2/22/26 -- I labeled and mulched the new peonies.

I put out a fresh cake of peanut suet.

EDIT 2/22/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I have just joined Bluesky, but it does seem to be very worthy and very focused on the big issues of real life, so I don't know how long I'll last over there.

I'm doing it again already, spreading myself too thin. That's it now. No other sites of social media allowed. I already know I can't keep up with one, let alone two. (Or three, in fact, since my non-writing real life friends and activities are all on Facebook.)

Went to the ACMI Game Worlds exhibition today. Which let me do a variety of fun things, such as:

  • Make Guybrush Threepwood in hit video game The Sims 2
  • Play Minecraft; finding that whoever was playing it prior had left it at nighttime with a bed built out in the open and zombies loitering around the villager sleeping in it.
  • Play Zork, specifically aiming to get eaten by a grue. That was all I wanted to do. And I did!
  • Get to watch this video while all comfy on a beanbag
  • Play Team Fortress. I'd love to say I was good at it, but when the only person on the enemy team was a kid who can't've been older than ten, it feels like an unfair assessment (and even then, I couldn't help but feel a little bad when I killed him!)
  • Play a bit of Silksong. Good game. I get the hype.
  • Play Celeste! They had a little speedrun section set up where the challenge was to beat someone's time. I, who have barely played Celeste, died. A lot. Repeatedly. For two minutes straight. On a big screen where some people were watching. But hey, I got to save a video of my attempt! That's neat.

But, regardless, I'd been meaning to go to the exhibition for a bit... and here we are! It was fun.

Candy Hearts author reveals!

[personal profile] candyheartsex has revealed authors!! Another delightful round. Because the minimum requirements are so small (300 words for fic) and there are usually several hundreds participants, I decide to go mega self-indulgent and ask only for my rare polyships, in tiny (K-9) and larger (Wind Breaker) fandoms. And therefore I was SUPER DELIGHTED to get, guess what?? A gift for one of my beloved rare polyships :D :D :D :D 💖💖💖 *happy sigh* A delight, truly.

pile of five by [archiveofourown.org profile] yesthisisnarumi | Wind Breaker | Sakura/Nirei/Suou/Kiryuu/Tsugeura | ~700 words | rated T

Summary: Akihiko wakes up in the middle of their bed and tries his best to find a way out.

Read it on AO3

Meanwhile I wrote two things :D :D One for a beloved BNHA polyship, and the other for K-9... I was so glad to have an outlet for some of my feelings over the fact that OBORO CANONICALLY GETS A COLLAR lol. This is probably the FIRST EVER K-9 fanwork in an exchange, too? >:D Mwahahaha

hardly an abduction | Boku no Hero Academia | Miruko/Dabi/Hawks | ~800 words | rated T
Summary: Dabi is injured. Miruko and Hawks take a risk to help, hiding in an abandoned shelter in the mountains.
Read it on Dreamwidth or AO3.

tailor-made | K-9 | Ren/Oboro/Fujimaru/Kagari | ~400 words | rated M
Summary: Oboro pretends not to make a big deal out of it when Hidaka hands him a collar.
But it is.
Read it on Dreamwidth or AO3.

Scientists just mapped mysterious earthquakes deep inside Earth

Scientists at Stanford have unveiled the first-ever global map of rare earthquakes that rumble deep within Earth’s mantle rather than its crust. Long debated and notoriously difficult to confirm, these elusive quakes turn out to cluster in regions like the Himalayas and near the Bering Strait. By developing a breakthrough method that distinguishes mantle quakes using subtle differences in seismic waves, researchers identified hundreds of these hidden tremors worldwide.

the new horizons temptation is rising up again but i think it's because my game rotation has Free Space so to say; like it's weird to describe how my brain works with games ... tomodachi life, hollow knight, and new leaf are my current active rotation right now (aka games i do not need to convince myself to play), but the issue is new leaf and tomodachi life can dry up pretty quickly if you finish your dailies/run out of things to do, and hollow knight i only play on stream

very much annoying when i have games installed i 100% know i love to play but when i look at them my brain is like 'meh, not right now, i don't care' and im like ?!??!?!?!? U LIKE THIS GAME WHY DO YOU NOT WANNA DO IT ... usually when i begin playing it, then i AM enjoying it, but there's the starting barrier that my brain doesn't wanna do it which always sucks to climb over unless it's a 'In Rotation' game

yada yada yada do normal people not have this issue LMAO

Name of tiny rural township

Feb. 21st, 2026 03:21 pm
gs_silva: My character cheerfully saying hi (Default)
[personal profile] gs_silva
I'm thinking of renaming the little township that two of my characters are from. It's generally in the Midwest, although the state could be anything from New York to Indiana, probably not any further west than that. I'd originally had it set in upstate NY, but then ended up modeling the college town somewhat after Columbus, OH.

The tiny township was Munro, originally, but Monroe is a common town name in many US states, so whichever state you think Alien Romance takes place in, will likely already have a place named Monroe or Munro.

Some of my contenders:

Malby, named after Malby, Sweden.
Maybe something about Burke, one of the established families there. Burke Path, Burke Bend, Burke Mill, Burkeville, just Burke
Lambert is another one. Lambert Mill?
Luddy, named after, I don't know, sounds cute and awkward and maybe a surname of a founding family. Then I can name some characters Luddy!

Opinions welcome! Additional suggestions also welcome.
