Ok so, I keep seeing this thing, and I'm going to speak briefly, and then shut up about it. Also, this is not angry, this is vaguely sad/frustrated.

SO. My journal is only on dreamwidth. And that was a sacrifice, and I don't want any kudos for that or anything, I'm just saying that to make it clear, I'm on this side of this particular equation. I read some things on LJ still, I make comments and link my fic on LJ, but no actual content goes there.

SO. When people on LJ are all 'well if enough people move to dw, I will go there' I want to scream: YOU ARE THE REVOLUTION! There is never going to be some magic light that goes on when there are 'enough' people on dw to make it 'worth it'. It's people, individually, one by one, deciding to post, and be excited, and use the site, that's what makes a difference, and to be honest, I love it here. I love the features, I love the people, I love the admins. I love the culture. Dreamwidth is a fantastic place, because people decided that they weren't waiting, they were just going for it.

So thank you to everyone who is here, who loves Dreamwidth, you guys more than make it worth it for me.

And Happy 2nd Birthday to Dreamwidth \o/ Two awesome years, and here's to many more.

The sad thing about that excuse, which is indeed very common, is also not about people they read because it's easy enough to keep up with people and blogs from elsewhere from DW. It's actually about people responding to their posts. And that's something that DW still falls down on there. There definitely isn't the same volume of participation here. So just coming here isn't enough if one doesn't actually respond and make their presence felt.

I forget which admin post it was, something about the import backup, and I noticed that people who had newly opened accounts were all complaining about how quiet it was here. Of course, posting-wise it's not quiet. It's quiet response-wise.

It does take time and energy -- sometimes for a given post, but definitely for a whole series of them. And given the large reading lists many people (if not most) have, there's no way anyone's commenting to more than just a handful of them every day. So that's why there needs to be a certain tipping point of users in general, but even more why there needs to be a very large core group of active users.

The reason I brought it up though is that I find the majority of the excuses why people don't move not deceptive exactly, because they're true enough, but rather not the most significant reasons. I mean in the past year or so there's been an enormous increase in the use of Tumblr by fandoms -- while many of those people are not using DW. So it isn't really that they won't use another service unless all of their friends do, or even if many of their friends do. Rather, they won't use a service unless it benefits them in some new or additional way.

Me too, especially since it's so much easier to find something again and to keep track of individuals.

I moved exclusively too. And I do get fewer comments on my stuff. But when I looked at my flist on LJ lately, it seems like most of those people left too. I don't know where they went, but I can't see them anymore.

This. Yes. I agree.

When I left LJ, it was before there was a DW. It was because of two competing policies.. One which said content had to be locked because children shouldn't see curse words and the other that said all content would be sent whole-cloth to advertisers gleaning keywords for contextual advertising.

Having all my posts locked made it difficult to make new friends and it wasn't doing anything for my actual privacy if any of my friends had ad-driven accounts (which I could not track or prevent.)

I don't read a lot of m/m slash and we don't have fandoms in common, but I did read a really decent Iron Man/Leverage x-over on AO3. http://archiveofourown.org/works/95390

Hiiiiiiiii! :D

And am in absolute agreement, regarding the 'well if enough people move to dw, I will go there' crowd. Everyone is waiting for everyone else to make the first step, which, well, that's not how it works, guys! Especially since there are people, like you, who have already made that step. How many more do you need? :(
