Personality:

Aichiirou "Ai" Nitori is not a genius. Let's start with that. He is not inherently talented at swimming even a little bit, especially not when it comes to his ridiculous senpai (and in one fairly heartbreaking case, his kohai.) But that doesn't stop Nitori--in fact, very little does. One of the most important facets of Ai as a character is that he works his cute duck butt off at pretty much everything he does. Ai practices at night and extra in order to try and get to the same level that the rest of the Samezuka swim team is: despite his obvious struggles in comparison to Momo, who is ridiculously, naturally talented despite being a little weirdo, Nitori never gives up. This can lead him to overpractice and overwork himself, however, and it takes a little guidance from his senpai in order to set him gently on the right path. His lack of talent is also a point of self confidence for Nitori, as his self-esteem is pretty low and he doubts himself often, once telling Rin, "I feel so useless." Still, he rarely gives up on anything; even when Rin is a little jerk throughout the entirety of the first season, Nitori continues doggedly trying to be his friend.

It's important to include Rin as an example of Nitori's character as well. Nitori looks up to Rin--in the first season, it's practically hero worship. Despite him being...the opposite of agreeable, Nitori admires his swimming skill, his drive, and his determination, as it's something that he very much wants to achieve as well. Nitori's admiration of Rin leads him to work harder to be like him, and helps to inspire him to be a better swimmer. The two of them were roommates before Sousuke came to Samezuka in the second season, and Nitori could be seen pretty frequently talking to him, whenever he got the chance.

And talking. And talking. Nitori tends to be a little bit of a chatterbox; this can be bad when he starts talking and doesn't really think about what he's saying. This could possibly be a manifestation of his nerves, as Nitori does get nervous, and is likened to a shaking little dog more than once. This foot in mouth disease has him even accidentally makes fun of the members of Iwatobi for having girly names...even though his beloved and important senpai Rin has a girly name, too. Oops. Nitori's chattiness makes him a little bold sometimes, but despite said foot in mouth disease, what comes out of Nitori's mouth is almost always kind. He's sweet and friendly pretty much all the time, and generally appears to be a warm, if slightly reserved person. Though he's chatty, Nitori is not as wild as Momo--he's very polite most of the time, and his reactions to things are honest, but certainly not overblown.

However, Nitori has plenty of "I can't believe you're doing this shit" faces to put on as well, as most anyone should have when dealing with people such as Momotarou Mikoshiba on a day to day basis. His sense of humor is a tiny bit deadpan, something he shares with Rin a little further in the second season of the show. He really wants to be cool, also, like Rin, at one point emulating so much that he even does his stupid goggle pop that Rin does every time he swims...but, in what's probably a metaphor for Nitori in general, he can't even do that right.

Overall, Nitori is generally a sweet, hardworking kind of guy. He has big emotions in a muted way, and wears his heart on his sleeve, but Ai is the most loyal friend you could ever ask for, and in the end, that's what counts.

This is more than I expected to be able to write about a show about gay swimming.

Abilities: All of Nitori's abilities have to do with his swimming. He's physically fairly strong and at least in good shape, but he's not as crazy and muscly as literally everyone else on the show. He's working on becoming a pretty fast swimmer like his teammates, something he trains at every day, and his specialties are the crawl and the breaststroke.

SAMPLES;
First Person: boop!

Third Person:

Nitori's time here in Holly Heights hasn't really been any different from his time at home. Sure, he doesn't get to swim in meets that often, but it wasn't like Samezuka was competing every single weekend at home; instead, it was practice, practice, practice. Nitori was even used to more or less living on his own--sure, he missed that his mom and dad were just a phone call away at home, but living in a house with strangers wasn't really any different than living in a dorm with his teammates. Plus, his house was a lot quieter, considering his top bunk wasn't taken by Momo, and he had his own room.

It was nice...but maybe a tiny bit boring.

Still, with Rin around, Nitori still attended practice early, early every morning. It's just after 8 AM when he makes his way out of the sports center on a Saturday, a towel looped around his neck even as he's changed into fresh clothes for the day. There's a two hour break before they get back to work, and Nitori makes his way to the back of the sports center after a few minutes and waits, sitting there quietly against the side of the building. Upon closer look, he's practically vibrating, trying to keep as still and quiet as possible, and it's only when he peeks around the corner to watch his captain leave with Tachibana that Nitori walks around the other side of the building, looking left and right furitively before he pops back into the sports center, just before the door closes.

The olympic pool's shimmering in the early morning light, silent now with the swim team out to take their first break of the day. It's beautiful like this, almost breathtaking, and Nitori looks to the left again to make sure no one's coming. Looks to the right.

Then, carefully, he pulls off his school shirt and ducks into the open locker room to change again. The process takes a few minutes, and by the time Nitori's all changed, he pulls his goggles over his head and stands on the block, heart starting to beat excitedly in his chest.

Extra practice, he thinks to himself, reaching up for the goggle strap on the back of his head to give it a tug. It snaps against his head a little too hard, hurts, and totally messes up his hair, and Nitori stands there for a second before he hurriedly reaches up and readjusts everything again, his cheeks flushing even if no one else could see.

Right.

"Fastest long distance time." he murmurs, setting himself on the block. "Ready...two..."

And, on the imaginary whistle Nitori hears in his head, he leaps out into the water with a graceful splash.
