Because Brokeback Mountain will be showing at a local cinema beginning Dec. 15 - yet another reason I ought to be glad I live where I live - but I'm worried. I know that people have been discussing this to death all over the internet, and on my flist, and on your flist too. And I'm just worried. I'm too aware that I'm in this safe little isolated corner of the web where women (straight and gay) write about men having sex with each other, and heck, occasionally the men in question aren't even characters but are real people, shock gasp. And I have to remember that I don't even know if anyone I encounter in RL who doesn't know about my fannish pursuits would be interested in seeing a movie such as Brokeback Mountain. I don't even know if I would have, a decade ago. Not because I was ever a raging homophobe, but I wonder: would I have thought it a bit too "weird" to see two men kissing? Having sex on-screen? I hadn't ever encountered anything like that back then.

What if a whole lot of people are that way? Who's going to go to this movie, who isn't invested in it somehow? I already have a co-worker who's mentioned he's going to go see Munich, but he didn't say a thing about Brokeback Mountain, and I wasn't sure whether I should even bring it up as a suggestion. Just. Gah. I'm nervous, and this isn't even my movie.... it just sort of feels like it is.

I read an article (in EW I think) talking about how the film was "career suicide" for Ledger and Gyllenhall. I laughed at it. Seriously, it might not be a blockbuster hit but I don't think anyone is expecting it to be. Gay people will go to see it, and open minded straight people will go to see it. Presumably Ledger and Gyllenhall fans will go see it and maybe some people curious in cowboys/sexuality will go see it. And, some folks will probably go see it on accident and stay for the ride. But it's hardly the first time a movie had been made that's shown men having sex together (I mean, this is a lot more tame than Rocky Horror!). It's presented in an entirely different format, sure, but it's still nothing new.

I wouldn't worry, honest.

It all sounds very reasonable and all, and maybe I'm being pessimistic. I guess I just think of a lot of other stories that had gay men acting sexually with one another - you cited Rocky Horror, but I can see people not taking that seriously, you know? Like it's not challenging their perceptions of what gay men look like or want or how they are together. And I know that there are people who consider themselves to be open-minded, but don't want to see two guys kissing. I dunno. We'll know in a week, and in four (!!!) days I'm SO not going to care about BBM for a while anyway, hehehe.

Yeah. I do know what you mean though. It's still not the first film of it's sort. It is perhaps one of the first big time main films but, still, did you see Boys Don't Cry? That involved a FtM transexual but it wasn't that different and the plot was, still, "gay people have sex and such!"

I suppose the biggest deal with BBM is that it's based on a true story and that it's "breaking" traditional views of the "manly cowboy." But, you know, that's only mainstream. Pornos and gay films have been gaying up cowboys for ages, hahaha. anyway, I really hope you're being pessimistic. I totally plan to go see BBM.

Also, what are you going to wear for the Flanvention?! I can't decide between casual/semi-casual or dressy. Aajdkfhfj.

I think the EW article then went on to say that it could've been career suicide for two male actors 5 or 10 years ago, but that actors are more willing to take chances now (relic of the whole "indie film" cred, I think) and that it could actually make careers for the boys. I think the actual review of the movie was very positive and said it was a love story, gay protagonists notwithstanding.

And I think I read somewhere about an exchange between Ang Lee and a producer of the movie, where Lee was saying that he supposed this film would appeal to gay moviegoers, and the producer said, "Nope, it'll appeal to women!" And he's daaaaamn right.

I watched a trailer on TV this evening and someone posted a 20 minute spot from LOGO. The more I saw, the more I wanted to go see it. I was thinking the same thing about going to see it. No one aside from my husband knows about my fannish interests. He certainly won't go see the movie with me and I seriously doubt any of my friends would be interested either. I've been debating just going alone or waiting a whole year for it to come out on DVD. The kids are going to a baseball camp during winter break. I may just head on over to the local cinema while they're busy.
