So, [livejournal.com profile] versaphile has kindly let me know about this new CBC show called Little Mosque on the Prairie, about a Canadian-born Muslim man from Toronto who moves to a small city in the prairies to serve as the local community's imam. I've since been able to watch the first episode and I'm kind of stunned and amused and excited and afraid to get too excited, lol.

First of all, I cannot believe this show actually got made. I mean, it got MADE. And it stars MUSLIM characters! Who occasionally pray and stuff, like, on camera! And it's set in the Canadian prairies! I mean... what.

I wonder what it's like watching the show knowing nothing about Islam, or only what one can gather from the news. I know I certainly had several sit-up-straight moments, recognizing the words and motions of salat, and noting the way the character named Rayyan (who is HOT by the way) pulled off her hijab as soon as she got home from work. Or gleeing over the fact that Sarah, her mother and a (blue-eyed, blonde haired) convert, practices Islam but does not wear hijab herself. Or the way their Pakistani imam sees Western secular conspiracies around every corner (although unlike the Pakistani imam I met with back home in Regina, this one can actually speak English!).

Also, the star of the show, the town's new imam, named Amaar? Also HOT.

I love the airport security jokes and the bomb jokes and the goat jokes and way the local cop asks Amaar (whom he thinks is going to set up a terrorist cell in their peaceful white-bread town), "are you from Egypt?" and Amaar sighs, "no! I'm from Toronto!" And I love everybody's Canadian "outs" and "abouts" even though people in the prairies don't really say it like that :DD.

Wow, I wonder if this show will stay on the air. I actually found it laugh out loud funny at times, in its cute earnest Canadian way. Canadian comedies do so much better than their dramas, so.... ♥

Just finished watching. I enjoyed it, even though I'm sure I missed a fair number of in-jokes. I recognized a few of the non-muslim actors--the Mayor from Corner Gas was in the cafe!

Hehehe, well, I'm glad you enjoyed it - I didn't know if the in-jokes MAKE the show or not, so yay!

Corner Gas is next up on my list to acquire!

I agree with this post in its entirety, although I'm not familiar with the Muslim faith and/or normal behaviour in the prairies. D: Hooray for being a rather ignorant student from Hamilton. But yes, it's a lovely little show, and I really hope it does well. Also, I agree that Rayyan and Amaar are both incredibly hot.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! I actually was reading articles about it this morning, and was surprised that it had such high ratings! Even if that drops off for subsequent episodes, it's encouraging :).

I watched that first episode totally by accident before work last night and I realized I loved it while laughing out loud at the line, "It's just Ramadan! Why are we making a big meal out of it?!" Puntastic!

Also, did you see the look Amaar and Rayyan shared when he first got out of the car? Love interest much? Oh yes, I think so!

Looks like it'll be a fun show all the way around and kudos to the CBC for it!

Hahaha, regarding Rayyan and Amaar, I don't believe I've ever rooted so hard for a het couple, so quickly, before! They're just so gorgeous.

I can't wait to see more :D.

Me too! They're so pretty together and then add in that they both have that lovely, bitey sense of humour and I think they could be great fun! I'm looking forward to watching it play out. :)

Those wacky Canucks... :-P

If the show is as described (as I don't get CBC and can't see it for myself)...well, I can't help but think it's only a matter of time before some Muslim "activist group" whines about the lack of hijab or there being too much "romantic interest" or the imam being portrayed as, well, less than perfect. Because, you know, there's no pleasing some people! :-P

In the US, I wouldn't be surprised if that happened. In Canada... well... maybe a couple of voices in the wilderness, but - I guess we'll see!

Well, since most of the "Muslim activist" groups in the US tend to be run by Saudi or fundie lackeys, a fatwa against it would be about what I'd expect, though of course there's always exceptions. But as for Canada, don't they kinda keep quiet up there?--like the stereotypically quiet and polite Canadians, LOLZ! XD

BTW, ahaha since you talked about "romantic interest"... there was one scene where Amaar is on the phone in a back room of the parish/mosque and Rayyan goes to talk to him (doors open and all, but ALONE, OMG), and I thought, "wow, someobody's bound to comment on how Satan is the third person in that room!" LOL.

Oh, you know...I totally should have told you about this. Hahaha. I saw it advertised over the holidays and I thought to myself, "Self...that looks interesting. I might have to watch it." Then of course, I forgot about it cause that's what I do. Get distracted by other shiny, sparkly things. Heh. BUT. I did catch the last two minutes or so the other night...and then on ETCanada, I watched an interview with the woman who created it. I'm thinking I might have to start watching regularly cause it looks pretty cool. (Also? Agree heartily with the statement about "Amaar" being HOT. Mmm. So much so.)

It's getting a lot of press up here. The woman who created it is actually from Regina! I missed the first episode (damn it!) but I see you posted links, so I'll have to watch it. Thanks for that!

Do they do oot and aboot? I just don't get that.

Hahaha, they do more like "oat" and "aboat", but it's still funny :). Those wacky Torontonians!

I laughed when I read some article where the creator of the show was talking about her experiences with the conservative Muslim men in Regina. I was like "....yeah, that sounds about right." LOL.
