Recapping

So I watched the second episode of Little Mosque on the Prairie last night and really enjoyed it again :). I had a couple of moments where I was like "I know Muslim law on this and that would not have happened" but on the other hand I felt like it worked with the characters involved. Like when Sarah shuts off Yasir's access to booty, I was like "hahaha, little does she know that the Muslim wife is not to refuse sex to her husband when he asks her!" but then I realized that Yasir, the not-really-all-that-practicing Muslim, probably doesn't know that, either. Hahaha.

The B-plot with Baber and his daughter was really interesting, too - sweet, and a bit shocking (I have never in my life seen someone get their period on clothing on TV before! Oh, CBC). I thought he would've forced her to start wearing the headscarf, myself, since he was so adamant about it, but now I'm not so sure. As a single dad who obviously felt close to her - and he DID go to Fatima, the fellow conservative, about it for help and advice - I felt I could buy this sitcom-land resolution as well.

And they even KEPT half the barrier! I was surprised. This is not going to be "see how Muslims really are just waiting for an enlightened imam to come around and show them how sexist they're being? Then they'll be just like everyone else!" Nope, they're straight up like "yeah, some women really are going to want that barrier, and some men really won't back down about it." Which is cool. I mean, yeah, rarrrrr, but it's definitely honest.

Okay, they've sold me. At least for television-viewing purposes!

I was feeling energetic and productive for no good reason at the crack of dawn yesterday and I entertained the thought of doing real, full recaps of Little Mosque since episodes are light on content and only half an hour. But then I realized people would probably be linking to me and stuff, and I really really really want to minimize Muslim traffic to my LJ, hahahaha. Been there, done that.

This for some reason got me thinking about recapping on TWOP, and Jacob's Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who recaps, and how I used to really like them but how I became increasingly aware of how batshit insane Jacob is and how kind of really awful his recaps are, when you think about it. I thought he just really loved the shows and thought the lack of insulting snark was refreshing. But at least snark is FUNNY.

If you've never read one of Jacob's recaps, here is an example of what you might expect. Say you're watching BSG, and there's some scene of domesticity (work with me here) and Kara's just checked the fridge for beer. Her partner -- let's say it's, oh what the hell, Lee -- has already taken the last one. "What, you took the last beer?" she would say as she slammed the refrigerator door shut, turning to look at him all incredulous. "Are you frakking kidding me?!"

Now, if I were recapping it, I would probably put it like this:

Kara goes to the fridge for a beer, only to discover Lee's taken the last one. She then proceeds to throw a hissy fit about it, since she's totally turning into a raging alcoholic just like her bff in dysfunction, Tigh.

Jacob would put it like this:

"What, you took the last beer?" Kara says, her face pulled into a rictus of anger. "Are you frakking kidding me?!" She is beautiful, a vengeful goddess. Kali and Sekhmet. Fury and scorn. It's all about possession.

Like. Huh? Yeah, I don't know, either. Now, imagine twenty pages of that.

I was reading an article about the creator of the show, Zarqa Nawaz, and the incident that gave her the idea for the show--she came into her mosque in Regina one day to find that a curtain had been strung between the sexes, while before they prayed together (I assume next to each other, not scattered together!).

In some places such as Indonesia, it is usual for the men and women to pray next to each other--separate, of course, but the two groups are next to each other. Of course, most other groups have women behind the men, or in a separate room--and that is the practice followed in most mosques in the West, sigh.

I'll have to watch that (as soon as I get the time, argh) and note down my opinions! :-P

I'm for the side-by-side prayer resolution, myself (that is, if nobody will stand for being mixed together in prayer). It seems by far the most equitable, yeah?

I would def. like to hear your thoughts on the show when you get around to it. Amaar sure gets away with a lot, but I admit to swooning a bit when he mentioned looking something up in al-Bukhari :D.

LOL...I'll have to keep a running commentary on it as I watch! XD

It seems the most important thing in regards to mosque arrangement for the sexes is where the Muslims are from--Arabs, for example, ALWAYS have the women in the back, while some more-liberal countries have them to the side. So it would depend where the majority of the worshippers or their parents/grandparents came from. Now, if they're all tenth-generation Americans or Canadians, they might not be willing to put up with Arab tradition and start demanding equal space and equal position!

Imams always say, when asked about the subject, "oh, the women are too distracting while praying"--well, gee, get your minds out of the gutter for a change! That seems of a piece with the claim that women having their hair uncovered will lead men to rape them or molest them--as if they have NO self-control of their own, sheesh. And how about men's butts being directly in front of you being distracting for the women?--well, if they're even in the same room!

I quite enjoyed this ep myself. Of course, most of the muslim stuff is actually new to me, so I find it a bit of a learning experience.
