I am totally digging the Mal/River these days. I know! Me! Het! Actually, I've been digging it ever since I read [Take Me Out to the Black], a sort of Mal/River manifesto. I don't know what prompted me to read it, since I started out feeling pretty much like "wtfzomgnooooo!!!", but by the end of this extremely well-argued essay, I was more like "huh. I... I guess you could see it if... huh. Yeah! I guess so!"

Yes, my OTP is Mal/Jayne 4-eva (squee!), and I even love me some Jayne/Simon and Mal/Simon and of course Zoe/Wash (though I don't really read fic about them). But Mal/River is like this great challenge that, if done well, really pushes my buttons.

And now people are writing it more and more. Hooray! But I still want more Mal/Jayne, y'hear?

So the other day I read [Teach Me to Hear the Mermaids Singing] and it made my heart go all a-flutter. It's actually rated Adult - further than I'd normally read in a Mal/River - but they're given a fair bit of time before things head in a sexy direction and it didn't squick me after all.

I still prefer the lead-up to a Mal/River relationship more than the relationship itself, so [Making It Whole] hit the spot pretty effectively. It's gen, mostly, but sort of Mal/River pre-het (hah! Pre-het!). I love how it's all crazy and disjointed and, well, River-y, and oh, Mal, Mal, my poor broken Mal. Such a woobie. *pets him*

And then in the non-Mal/River world there is Van, who is one sick puppy. [And In The End] (Jayne/Wash, Mal/Wash... pretty much everybody in the 'verse/Wash) is way, way, way darker than I feel comfortable with in a fic, but it's also so very good that I can't not recommend it. Just, you know. Pull your heart out and toss it on the floor before you read, is all. Bad Van! Bad! (in the Latin.)
