Reading [this wank] about liberal white guilt, and jat_sapphire makes this point:

I really do sympathize with how hard it is to be told that you're secretly doing something you abhor and would never intentionally do. But, you know, in my experience people who really are trying not to be racist, even when they're upset about being splashed with the same crazy-paint as the dyed-in-the-wool, won't-hire-them-affirmative-action-whores, what's-all-the-fuss-about-slavery's-over, sheesh-why-do-they-hafta-talk-so-lazy people ...cut people of color a BREAK for not being psychic enough to instantly read your trying-hard credentials through your fucking stupid questions.
My own favorite is "Can I touch your hair?" Makes me want to say, "Can I get a skin-dyejob or something so I don't have to be in the same race with anyone who thinks other people are their flipping STUFFED ANIMALS?"

that has me bobbing my head in agreement.
--[here]

And then... then geekmagirl says this:

You know, I've found that if you just smack their hands and say "Sit!", they'll never, ever do that again. It's much easier than the lecture about how this is my hair, and not your hair, and we're both strangers to each other, and they're an idiot.
--[here]

and I am broken. I cannot laugh out loud, for I am at work. So I purse my lips and and tears of hilarity leak out of my eyes. Ow. Oh, ow.

I had a front row seat to the wank because I'm an observer in [livejournal.com profile] debunkingwhite; I tend to leave [livejournal.com profile] blackfolk alone. It was wank of staggering proportions. Although I think I'm finally going to make a suggestion that the people of color on debunking step out of the mess and let those folks get on with their stuff because it's all just boggling.

Yeah, see, I'm aware of those communities (well, [livejournal.com profile] blackfolk anyway; I didn't know about [livejournal.com profile] debunkingwhite until today), but I just know I'd wank all over them. There is just too much that would have me cringing over there, I think. You're a braver one than me.

Actually, I'm more like a lemming. A friend would see something in one of those communities then post about it, usually with a comment like, "Girl you have got to see this." And me like a fool go tripping over there like a looky loo at a trainwreck. I've been sucked in once or twice but I'm usally just in awe of the weirdness.

so I shouldn't ask if I can touch your hair? *g*

the way some people think (or fail to) never ceases to amaze. it'd almost be funny, except it's so damn sad. it makes me wonder just how long real change will take. when you consider that generally attitudes now are improved over 50 years ago, I begin to fear I won't live to see it.

*facepalm* LOL

And the zinger that inevitably follows the "can I touch your hair?" question? Is when they do touch it and say "oh, it's so soft!" The implication being what, now? Yeah, bite me.

Hey now, I have a healthy admiration for Lotrips. From afar. Um. I mean, I still think Dom is hot! Does that not count for anything these days?

I currently have a shower cap on my head, because I can figure out NO OTHER WAY to keep my hair from attacking my eyes. Barrettes don't work, clips don't work, yelling at it doesn't work, offering it money doesn't work. I have on flip-flops, a shower cap, and a shirt with Daffy Duck. Oh, and boxers that say "8-ball" on them. I look like a refugee from a bad 80s college movie.

Oh my. I hope you weren't thinking of leaving the house today!

The most beautiful thing just occured to me. If I'm staying with my parents until near July, I can special order a bra and have it shipped to their place!

Damn boobs that require special ordering. Bitches!

On the other hand, my hair is under control lately.

I would so leave the house in a shower cap, too. Just because I'm CRAZY like that. Also, because I would forget that I have it on.

Ahahahahaha! Oh, I have to pass that tip on to the girl here at work who has to deal with that a lot. She has really long, gorgeous hair, and apparently she had to stop working retail because people kept touching it.

Hell, I may have to start doing that myself. (Yes, my hair is short-cropped and fuzzy. No, you may not touch it, unless you are either a friend or a small child. And you definitely can't touch without asking first!)
