Got to start In Stars And Time the other day (Odile's fanart had finally successfully allured me) and it was genuinely the most I've laughed at a video game in ages and I'm only 2 and a half hours in. That thing with the boulder had me running around my house because I'd called it literal seconds before it happened XD Lovely angst seeds being planted as well; looking forward to seeing those through until the end. Especially seeing as these characters are so strong, personality wise; whatever happens, it'll be heartfelt, for sure.

Also I'm a little obsessed with the fact that the manual has legit recipes in it. No one is doing it like this game for real.

While that was not the result I wanted...

Today's USA versus Canada game was a big deal because NHL players couldn't be in the Olympics for a while. Today was the most top talent on the ice that's been seen ever, because last time USA was in the Olympics we had far fewer NHL players on our roster. This was as close to 'just let all the best players play each other' as we've ever gotten.

Youtube short that is a visualization of the increasing parity between countries and comparing this year to the last time NHLers could play.

In exchanges news, Candy Hearts exchange had reveals- I wrote an angsty triple drabble for S.C.I.谜案集 | S.C.I. Mystery (TV):
- To Banishing Memories Summary: It wasn't a bedside vigil, it was more that Bai Yutang just couldn't make himself leave.

[community profile] hurtcomfortex also announced it would not be running this year :( but will be back in 2027 :)

Since the beginning of the year I got it in my head to teach myself nalbinding (an incredibly ancient technique, while now thought of mostly as a Viking era thing it actually predates the Vikings by thousands of years, with textile fragments made using the technique found at the Nahal Hemar Cave (modern Israel) dating back to 6500BCE and from 4200BCE in Tybrind Vig (modern Denmark) but there's lots of evidence from many places more "recently" like socks from 4th C CE Egypt and hats and shawls from Peru from 300BCE to 300 CE) and post-Birthday Bash really threw myself into figuring it out. There are SO many different stitches and techniques and very little standardization and there's very, very little out there about it (i.e. NO patterns basically whatsoever). After watching approximately eleventy billion videos and trying to muddle my way though some articles and books I have sort of figured out a few different styles/stitches but who knows if I'll manage to actually make anything. It's been fun (and frustrating but whatever) to attempt though!

And, as always, [community profile] recthething recs (tumblr art for Bridgerton, Doctor Who, Merlin and Under the Skin):

Bridgerton
- Sophie at the ball (gorgeous)

Doctor Who
- Sillies (cute doodle of Ten and Thirteen interacting)

Merlin
- Happy Valentine's Day!! (adorable modern!au doodle)
- I once read a fanfic with a modern AU where Arthur is a restorer. Now I think about it all the time (I haven't read that fic - it's in Russian and incomplete - but I really like this art for it)

Under the Skin (TV)
- Cuddle (adorable Du Cheng hugging Shen Yi and settling in Shen Yi's lap)
- uno reverse of the cuddle (so gentle and sweet of the two in reversed positions)

If, like me, languages interest you, I thought these two Old English/Middle English/Modern English story telling techniques were a fascinating way to show the way English has changed through time. How far back in time can you understand English? (posted story) and From Old English to Modern American English in One Monologue (video).

Using My Neos: A Quick & Dirty Guide

When I discuss queer topics in fandom spaces geared towards older folks, like Dreamwidth, a lot of people express that they would like to use my neopronouns, but they don't know how. So, I made this small run-down, for people who would like to learn. I will be using he/him as a base example for all of these.

Please keep in mind that, if you use any of these incorrectly, I won't be upset! I appreciate the effort itself deeply. And, if you prefer to use more well-known pronouns for me, you can use alternating he/she.

Fae/faer
Replace "he" with "fae". Replace "him" with "faer". Replace possessive-determiner "his" with "faer", and possessive pronoun "his" with "faers". Replace "himself" with "faerself".
"He is very passionate. I met him recently. Is that his computer? He told me that it was his. He prefers to do things by himself."
"Fae is very passionate. I met faer recently. Is that faer computer? Fae told me that it was faers. Fae prefers to do things by faerself."

That set is the most unique in its usage, because it is the only set that I use that is not "nounself" (a neopronoun set which centers around using a noun). All of the rest of my pronouns follow an extremely similar format to each other.

Continue? )

Inspired by [community profile] adventdrabbles, I will be posting daily prompts at [community profile] 40daysofdrabbles from Ash Wednesday to Easter, prompts will mostly be winter/spring themed things.

Any fandom (minus RPF/Reality TV), pairing or rating is allowed. Feel free to combine with other challenges! Minimum word count is 100 words, but no maximum.

Our first five prompts are now up! Feel free to start writing or follow us incase a prompt jumps out at you!

Or want to suggest prompts? Have questions?

So check out [community profile] 40daysofdrabbles!!

The original purpose [community profile] 40daysofdrabbles is just to write 40 drabbles about whatever you want to focus on, or ask your friends for prompts/ships/fandoms - this is open year-round although it originally started as a personal challenge ages ago for Lent. This still applies if you want to combine the two events.

Having a panic attack while your friend is also having a very shitty time and having to help (while trying to not seem like you yourself are having a bad time) is sure an experience. Been trying to get over it with movies.

Zootopia's message is still a little muddy, but "Didney" would never do something like this now (Zootopia 2 not withstanding, no idea how good that one is). Goldeneye made me feel like a kid again. I always forget I enjoy James Bond movies. The difference is I'm an adult now, and can think of them critically.

As for new watches... 8½ is... overrated? I guess? It feels like a dream, it plays with its medium so darn well, but alas, I cared not for our director character. Maybe on a rewatch it's better, but I have no desire to do so. Sleeping Car though? Very very silly. Always nice seeing Madeleine Carroll in a not-drama. I have seen four talkies with Ivor Novello and in half of them he's the most obnoxious rascal (good, he plays them well). Lots of moving camera, not enough trains. I still enjoyed I Lived With You more, but somehow believed Carroll and Novello's romance more than Jeans and Novello.

(And I would believe his romance with me even more *cough*)

I have to thirst somewhere. My friends can't handle it, and it's not even as scandalous as Cairns's for Veidt's tight clothing :P

EDIT: Ah! Almost forgot! [community profile] bethefirst is having its (optional) signups! [community profile] tardis_remix is also having (obligatory) signups and prompt claiming!

I'm really tired, and don't feel in any way prepared for the upcoming working week, but I've been trying to mitigate that with a very lazy Sunday. I had grand plans to plant the first of the spring seeds and start germinating seedlings in the growhouse, I had plans to go out for a walk with Matthias (the weather today is gorgeous), but instead I've spent the whole day vegetating in my wing chair in the living room, watching the tail-end of the Winter Olympics from the corner of my eye, watching Olia Hercules cook borshch on a BBC cooking show, scrolling around on Dreamwidth, and so on.

Matthias and I saw Marty Supreme at the community cinema earlier this week, and we'll be heading out to see Hamnet tonight, so it's definitely been a film-heavy time by our standards. I'm anticipating a lot of cathartic crying tonight.

I've continued to make my way through mythology/fairytale/folktale retellings recommended by you on a previous post. This week it was Girl Meets Boy (Ali Smith), a slim little novella in conversation with Ovid's Metamorphoses, concerned with fluidity in gender, gender presentation, sexuality, and so on. It felt very, very, very of its time and place (the UK in the 2000s), but that's not to say that its specificity was a bad thing.

I also read The Swan's Daughter (Roshani Chokshi), a lush, surreal fairytale of a book in which the titular daughter (one of seven sisters born to a power-hungry wizard and his swanmaiden wife) finds herself caught up in a competition to win the hand of the kingdom's prince in marriage. Chokshi's previous books have been very melodramatic and earnest, and she's relished the opportunity here to shift the tone to something much more humorous and knowing, while still digging into her favourite big themes: the tension between love and vulnerability, genuine love requiring an embrace of uncertainty, and the interplay of love and monstrosity made literal.

It reminded me so much of one of my very favourite books — The Forgotten Beasts of Eld (Patricia McKillip) — although the latter is portentous and serious where Chokshi is whimsical and humorous that I picked up the McKillip for yet another reread. I've written about it here before, so suffice it to say now that it remains an incredible book — sharp and perceptive, devastating and beautiful.

I'll leave you with this fantastic link to a Shrove Tuesday tradition in which contestants dressed in costumes race through central London while flipping pancakes in pans. It's as delightful as you might imagine.

Six Sentence Sunday

A bit more of this:

A light touch at his elbow had him turning immediately, but he was not greatly surprised to find the Princess Svetlana Vetrova standing behind him and smiling at him impishly. She wore a long, blue pelisse over her gown - to guard against the chill sea winds, Ilya supposed, such as they were in June - and an extravagant poke bonnet, curled plumes cascading along its crown, sat atop her glossy ringlets. She was accompanied by her maid - a dour creature - as propriety demanded whenever the Princess took the air on the deck. Now, the woman waited a few steps away and stared down at the hem of her dress, providing them with the semblance of private speech. Ilya had no doubt that she would, nevertheless, memorise every word that passed between them and report back to Svetlana's mother - at least, she would do so if they conducted their conversation in Russian.

"So, you have not succumbed to the seasickness like your Mama," he said by way of greeting, in French.
