Captive-wide Thrift Store/Swap Meet/Flea Market
Hello! This is Schist and I play Velma among other silly humans, and with the new batch of arrivals coming in while the shops appear to no longer be restocking, Velma's had a thought. What if they were to set up some sort of permanent (likely situated in a classroom) place where they can exchange items, services, food, and off-network information?
A garage sale of sorts. See subject line for other possible nomenclatures.
She also sees this as an opportunity for the captives to become more self-reliant and cohesive, working together to build a sustainable community beyond weapons and food hoarding. And most importantly, outside of Compass' puppet strings.
With trash and treasure being very relative descriptors, she thinks this idea has some merit, but knows that she cannot handle the organization and running of this on her own. She's looking for help. Be that as it may, Velma watches the network well enough, and would prefer to have new arrivals as well as those not already committed to running things working on this project.
This is for two reasons. One, it would make sense for new arrivals to benefit the most out of such an idea, and would hopefully appear less like a resistance organization and more like a charity system. Secondly, she doesn't want to split attentions or be associated directly with known resistance efforts.
Because she might just have the long term goal of using this flea market set up to not only trade wares and services, but information as well. Consider it a great way to facilitate gossip hour and pass written codes through various items.
Before I posted anything ICly from her, I wanted to put this up for plotting in a place accessible for the whole game instead of those on my plurk list.
I want to be clear that this is a plot open to ALL PLAYABLE CHARACTERS, just the organization/leading efforts will be prioritized to newer arrivals that haven't already made huge time commitments to another effort, specifically public resistance efforts.
Obviously, liaisons to these organizations/efforts would be a great addition to the dynamics of this plot, so they are welcomed and encouraged.
Which reminds me of the services mentioned previously. Everyone has survival skills that are marketable in one way or another. My thoughts are that people could have 'booths' where they offered said services to the other captives. After all, what's the difference between sewing a hole in a shirt and sewing up a wound in the field?
These service booths could be ways to rotate in classes/guest speakers on various skills, as well as spread specific information. I'm still not set on the details, but I like the possibilities of this idea.
Now I'm opening this whole plot up for discussion! Suggestions are welcomed and encouraged as I really want to see something like this successfully up and running in game.
I'm not going to be setting up subthreads here, so please use subject lines accordingly to help keep this discussion open and navigable. While I prefer for plotting for this idea to take place here, I can be reached by pm or plurk under schist.
I really hope that I'm not stepping on anyone's toes with this idea, as I haven't seen anything regarding something similar. Please let me know if I've missed something in that respect!
Without any more of my rambling, to the plotting!

pan's lived in the jungle most of his life, and he has experience in homemade weaponry such as clubs, spears, and bows and arrows and other things. judging by his clothes he probably has some sewing/patchwork skills, too, and he's probably going to be open to the idea of opening a booth for his work if he can get Stuff in exchange.
for great irony, though, he might have a side-desk for all things lost and found, if no one else will claim such a booth. sooo count pan in!

Velma would likely frown upon openly trading/selling weapons at these things, as she wouldn't want to bring any unwanted attention or ire from, but definitely wouldn't stop it so long as it's on the down low. Though Pan's weapon making probably wouldn't draw too much ire considering all the jungle monsters.
I like the lost and found idea lots!

BUT IF IT'S TOO MUCH i could just have him have the "lost and found" booth while selling/trading the weaponry under the table...! win-win?

I'm just trying to figure out the best way to implement and set up this ICly and OOCly!

baroona's spent a lot of time drifting about and has picked up a couple miscellaneous skills on the way but the one he'll probably provide is laundry, specializing in getting blood out of fabric. stuff like that he'll probably do in return for cigarettes or clothes or general items to keep in a sort of emergency supply closet that he'll probably maintain and ration out to people in who need it. it would largely be clothing, canned foods/nonperishables, etc. etc. instead of weapons or medical stuff.
so long as no one else in-game is doing that, i mean.

Man I'm certain that people would enjoy the luxury of someone else doing their laundry for them. Especially the bloody ones.
I think these are all items that would be in demand, especially with the creamed corn back!

Neal spent a good long (undefined) amount of time running away from and surviving Pan and his lovely little hoodlums, so suffice to say he's got a ton of survival skills. fire-making, rudimentary weapons and tools, etc
he also spent a decent chunk of his childhood and early adulthood as a con-man and thief, so he's got a lot to offer in that department as well. he might be okay as a liaison, but he'd be reluctant to offer himself in something that active of a role. par for the course in his 'careers' to keep a low profile.
