❊ BASIC INFO

Born on Cocoon, a "paradise in the sky," or a hollow planet resting above the lowerground, an untamed wasteland, Sazh, like all Cocoon denizens, was indoctrinated from childhood to fear and hate the lowerworld of Pulse, which no Cocoon denizens had ever actually seen. Their every want and need was fulfilled by mysterious beings known as fal'Cie, who were responsible for the upkeep and infrastructure of the planet, including food production, technology and the government, known as Sanctum. The fal'Cie will, at times, impart a Focus onto a human, or a task they must fulfill. This gives the human a brand on some part of their bodies, which serves as a ticking time bomb — if the brand progresses to its final stage without the human completing their Focus, they are transformed into an undying monster known as a Cie'th. If they are able to complete their focus, however, they are given the "gift" of crystallization, and spend eternity dreaming.

Sazh is a widowed airship pilot and single father to his son, Dajh, who he is wholly dedicated to. During a trip to the Euride power plant, the Sanctum fal'Cie Kujata was attacked by two Pulse l'Cie. Sensing it was in danger, it branded the first human it could sense, which happened to be the six year old Dajh. Dajh is immediately taken into Sanctum custody, and they begin to research what the boy's Focus might be. Sazh grows to mistrust the Sanctum, and begins to lose hope for his son. When the Pulse fal'Cie, Anima, is discovered in the Cocoon island town of Bodhum, he begins to develop a plan — to destroy that fal'Cie in order to free his son from the clutches of another, and inadvertently becomes involved in the Purge — a Sanctum-backed order to kill all the people in Bodhum, simply because they had the misfortune of coming in contact with a Pulse fal'Cie.

Sazh is branded a l'Cie in an attempt to destroy Anima, along with four others: Lightning, former Guardian Corps soldier, Snow Villiers, her future brother in law and leader of a rebel group known as NORA, Hope Estheim, a boy who lost his mother in the Purge, and Vanille, a strange girl who seems to be another victim of the ill-fated Purge. Along with the others, Sazh is deemed an enemy of Cocoon, and so must race against the clock of his brand, and try to prevent Cocoon's destruction, all while he attempts to help his son.

Sazh is world-weary and deeply beaten down by his circumstances, but compared to his younger companions, is much more calm and reasonable, serving most often as a level-headed mediator. He is very gentle and easily moved to tears, and seems to be a natural caretaker. He's a good dad who is trying his best, basically.

❊ FIRST IMPRESSIONS

⚜ VISUAL: Sazh stands at 6'2", and is a lean, middle-aged man with a very neatly kept afro. His typical manner of dress is his airship pilot uniform, and his casual wear is pretty snazzy. I'd like to think he's a sharp dresser — no terrible dad hawaiian shirts for him! In addition, he has a baby chocobo with him at all times, who hides in his fro. His l'Cie brand, in situations where it's relevant, is located on his chest.
⚜ DEMEANOUR: Gentle, world-weary. Sazh comes of as someone who is generally a rather cheerful individual, but has been through a lot and is in a constant state of worry about his son, so it's diminished him. He stands with slumped shoulders often, scratches his head on occasion, and overall is less limber and quick to move than his younger companions. He is a frequent, sardonic joker and a pessimist, but if he's trying to cheer someone up or is in one of his better moods, he will resort to dad-isms (bad dad jokes, dumb voices... the works).
⚜ SOUND: Reno Wilson (English) & Masashi Ebara (Japanese). He often sounds a little exhausted, unless he's panicking, and out of the main cast is the most talkative.
⚜ SCENT: A little like chocobo, unfortunately for him lol. Also a cologne probably, likely something citrus/sandlewood forward.
⚜ MENTAL INFORMATION: cw: suicidal ideation

After losing his son in Nautilis, Sazh is openly suicidal, and tries to take his own life, but I believe he has likely been struggling with this since his son was turned into a l'Cie. Dajh is quite literally his life, and he clings to the idea of being able to save him, despite feeling utterly hopeless about the prospects. When he loses this, he can no longer keep up the illusion of stability. I would say that even in later parts of the canon he likely struggles with depression on varying levels. Any empath/psychic would also possibly be able to see his Focus if they deep dived enough, which depicts a flash of a multi-armed monster destroying a planet.

Other than that, Sazh has no differences physiologically or mentally than any other human. He has no psychic defenses, but please let me know if you want a thread to go into psychic deep-dives.

⚜ RELATIONSHIPS: As far as gen goes, and just overall, my primary interest in Sazh honestly is found family dynamics, particularly with younger people he can be a decent father figure toward (or at least long-suffering toward.) He is also an excellent straight man if you ever have a character with a hair trigger temper.

I am open to m/f, m/m and nonbinary characters for shipping with Sazh. He is a widower, a single dad, and a little older and more settled, so someone who would be able to break him a little out of his comfort zone or someone who was at a similar level of maturity would be great for him. I'm big on crosscanon ships involving other Final Fantasy characters as well, and I love crosscanon in general, so I'll do just about any ship. I will tag animanga, eastern/western videogames, comics, live action, and western animation canons. I have no preference as to medium, so don't be nervous about tagging me!

As far as canon ships go, I don't really have any in particular for Sazh! Come at me with that crosscanon.

I'm all for smut threads, though for Sazh my preference would be characters 25 and up. I'm a little flexible depending on the character, so if you have someone you think would work, just let me know! My only hard no is teens. One note: if you tag me in a meme and most or all of your icons are pornographic/hentai/ecchi in nature, I will not thread with you. Sorry! I will also not thread adult content with players who are under 18.
