Canon Point: Post Series
AU/CRAU: CRAU from Holly Heights (also a returning character)
Age: 13 in canon - turned 14 in Holly Heights
History: [ Here ]
Personality: At first, it's hard to tell just how much of Kazumi's personality is entirely her own and just how much she inherits from Michiru -- she shares some of Michiru's surface personality traits, such as her love for food, but it's made very clear from the moment that we know there ever was a Michiru that she and Kazumi are very different people, despite their origins and Kazumi displays some initial anxiety over being viewed as merely a replacement Michiru by the Pleiades. This even extends to her ultimate wish in the manga -- to become a 'real human', and she states that she can't move forward unless she has her own body and not one created by the Pleiades to revive Michiru. It's this, more than anything, that mostly firmly underlines that Kazumi considers herself a separate person from her predescessor and there are, ultimately, far more differences between the girls than there are similarities -- Michiru was fairly mature for her age, serving as a big sister to her friends, while Kazumi is quite childish and definitely the little sister of the group. But they are similar in the ways that matter -- as Umika puts it herself, Kazumi is "good and kind" like Michiru was.

Kazumi is an energetic young girl, who never seems to tire out. She's a little hot-headed and her moods sometimes swing between emotional extremes in the blink of an eye. Still, she's cheerful most of the time, though she can come off as a bit of a ditz and often has rather over the top reactions to things -- especially food. Kazumi loves to make friends and meet new people -- she's naturally a very charming young girl, though she's mostly unaware of her charisma and therefore unable to tell when she is in fact being charming. When she makes a friend, she's loyal to the end and cares deeply for them. She goes to great lengths to protect her friends, often at her own expense -- she risks turning herself into a Witch in order to win a Grief Seed to save her friends from the same fate.

Because of this, Kazumi considers betraying one's friends to be one of the cost despicable things a person can do. When it appears that the Pleiades have betrayed her and are attempting to kill her, she does not hesitate in leaving them for her own safety and actively hiding. When she does eventually confront them for answers, she makes sure she is totally in control of the situation and never fully forgives their actions -- apart from Kaoru and Umika, who prove their love and dedication to their friend -- though it's possible that, given the time, she may have done so eventually. She's sympathetic towards Kanna Hiriji, despite all the awful things she'd done, though this may be attributed to Kazumi feeling kinship with her, as they were both 'artificial' humans, created with magic.

She's also very childish for her age -- she's a middle-schooler but she looks and acts a fair bit younger. This is most evident when she's with her friends Umika and Kaoru who are both middle schoolers themselves and come off as much more mature than Kazumi. This isn't to say that she's completely immature -- she has an incredibly strong sense of justice and responsibility, though she tends to hold other people by this same ideal and is often surprised when they don't match it. She hates unnecessary conflict, especially of the physical kind and will never resort to violence if she thinks there's another option. However, she's not afraid to fight when it comes down to it and works very well in a team -- she was often the linchpin in the strategies that the Pleiades came up with.

Something that's also important to make note of is Kazumi's attitude towards food -- she has a great deal of love and respect for it, something she inherited from her grandmother. She was taught the importance of never wasting food and respecting the lives of the animals whose meat had been used for your meal. She believes strongly that people who don't leave leftovers are inherently good people -- after all, a bad guy never finishes anything and certainly not a meal!

Kazumi herself never leaves any leftovers, though this is more to do with the fact that she just loves to eat. Whenever she's hungry, that issue will be the forefront of her mind -- when she woke up naked and confused in a briefcase of all things, the first thing she demanded of her supposed kidnapper was food. If she's upset or distressed, she'll almost always have something to eat. This is another attitude she inherited from her grandmother, who told her to listen to her stomach if she was upset -- because if she was hungry, that meant she still wanted to live.

Ultimately, Kazumi is a girl who just wants to be happy and make other people happy. Her love of food and cooking and her hatred of conflict are all testaments of that. When the people she loves are happy, Kazumi is happy and that's more than enough for her.
Debt: To bring back the Pleaides Saints who were killed by Kana Hiriji
Suitability: Kazumi's no stranger to contracts and working hard to repay a debt she needs to pay for a wish. She's a hard worker who won't complain no matter what job she has to do -- to an extent, anyway. Anything that contracts Kazumi's internal set of morals too much will probably upset her but she does understand that this is work and she's in debt -- she'll do what she has to do.

Previous Game Info: Kazumi's time at Holly Heights was, in a way, a little uneventful -- mostly because, being as it is a slice of life game, it was very different from the life she'd been used to back at home. There were no Witches to fight, no Soul Gem to worry about and though, admittedly, she was a little lonely without Kaoru and Umika, she took to her new home like a fish to water.

Upon arriving at Holly Heights, Kazumi immediately made a post to the network, to try and familiarize herself with the place and to work out if Kaoru and Umika were there, too. While she didn't manage to find her old friends, she maaged to make some new ones -- Snow Villiers, Madoka Kaname and Mami Tomoe. That evening, she cooked a housewarming dinner and began to bond with her assigned "mother", Olivia.

Not long after Kazumi arrived however, tragedy struck the community in the form of a spate of murders that the Landlord seemed to have set up for his own entertainment. She angrily took to the network, upset that this safe place had been desecrated and offering to help anyone who was investigating the murders. This came to naught, unfortunately, as the murders were eventually uncovered by someone else, but... well, it's the thought that counts right?

It was also around this time that Kazumi openly outed herself as a magical girl in the network, after privately revealing this to Homura Akemi, fellow Puella Magi. She did this in the hopes of finding other Puella Magi in Holly Heights and found her way to Mami Tomoe this way.

Eager to get her mind off the gruesome, Kazumi did the rather counter productive thing of attending a group trick-or-treating session. After a tea party with the other Puella Magi (and Madoka) in which they sewed their costumes, the girls went along with the trick or treating group. It was here that Kazumi met Makoto Tachibana, who became her big brother figure for the rest of her time in Holly Heights.

The rest of Kazumi's year was busy -- she got herself a job working at Honeybee Cafe as a part-time chef and attended Makoto's birthday party (where she met Rin Matsuoka, and began to call Makoto "Makoto-nii").

Things continued nicely for some time -- but Kazumi found herself growing increasingly frustrated with her "normal" body -- she'd literally been born as a Puella Magi and so being suddenly brought down to normal and all that that implies was very jarring for her. This came to a head at the beginning of December when she tried training for the Dunkin' Go Nuts marathon with Rin and ended up pushing herself too hard and landing flat on her face when she tripped. There was a lot of nose bleeding and crying and it was super embarrassing -- and following this, she was forced to accept her inability to be quite as strong and fast as she was used to being.

Thankfully, the rest of December went on without much incident -- in fact, she made a new friend in new arrival Kyouko Sakura (The Different Story version, rather than her anime counterpart) and went about the chaos of buying gifts for all her friends. Come Christmas Day, she found herself attending two parties (well, she was hosting one of them but still) and spent the night at Makoto's house after passing out into a food coma. It was also at this party that Kazumi had her (disastrous) first encounter with the Student Council President who... apparently didn't go by any other name than Prez.

January saw Kazumi taking part in a bake sale with Mei to fund the Holly Heights Drama Society and in the Speed Friendmaking run by the Holly Heights Neighbors Club. It was here she had her second, slightly less terrible, meeting with Prez and made two new friends -- Haruka Kokonose and Chiaki Nanami. Unfortunately, the jolly atmosphere from Christmas didn't stick around long -- she had a rather bad first meeting with Dipper Pines (though they eventually reconciled) and the Landlord thought it was a good idea to have everyone's secrets on display for a week -- meaning that all of Holly Heights could see Kazumi's secret.

"I died once and my friends did something awful to bring me back."

This drove her closer to one of her friends, Asuka Kyouno and she hid out for a good while, to make sure no one else saw it.

It seemed like the fates were conspiring against Kazumi, however -- she was finally making big leaps in becoming friends with Homura, was happy at home -- and then a group of her friends left, Homura and Olivia included. Alone and afraid to be alone in the house, Kazumi posted to the network about their leaving and found herself with more friends visiting than she knew how to handle. She spent that night at Makoto's house, where she did a whole lot of crying and dropped the "hey, I'm a clone and also a magical girl" bombshell on him, something she'd been scared of telling anyone beforehand.

But karma balanced the scales a little but -- Olivia came back to Holly Heights not long after Kazumi was moved into a house with a new parent and while she remembered nothing of her previous stay, she and Kazumi were able to become friends again. Homura returned as well and to Kazumi's delight, she and the other girl became fast friends once again, despite her lack of Holly Heights memories.

Around this time, she also joined the Holly Heights Idol group, in order to perform with Natsuru "Natsuru-nee" Senou, but her first (and only) scheduled performance was cancelled when the weather took a turn for the worst on the very day they were due to perform.

To her great delight, she also managed to regain her powers around this time -- she took part in the Landlord's treasure hunt and won a regain, which she used to buy back her Soul Gem and associated powers, with the plus of not having to worry about Witches or her Soul Gem darkening while she was at Holly Heights.

Just before she left, Kazumi had her fourteenth birthday party at the Moe Moe Funtime Haven cafe and invited all her friends. She spent an enjoyable day with all of them and then left Holly Heights for home not long after -- or rather, she left Holly Heights for Koriko and contracted with the Witch.

Holly Heights gave Kazumi a taste of something she'd never had before -- a normal life. It allowed her to relax and not worry about Witches and Soul Gems, Incubators and Puella Magi -- it let her be a normal girl, for however brief a time that was. Unfortunately, her loneliness caused by Kaoru and Umika's absence made her a little too quick to let people in and become close, a problem that will likely be amplified in Koriko.

Inventory: Her Soul Gem - taking the form of a ring with a small blue gem, with her name written on it in a strange, runic language. It can change forms at will, shifting to an egg-shaped white-blue gem in a gold casing. Her Soul Gem is the source of her magic and contains her soul. Without it, she can't use any magic -- and she'll basically die if her Soul Gem exceeds a one hundred meter radius of distance from her body.

Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses: Kazumi is a Puella Magi, which is essentially her universe's version of a magical girl. As you can guess, this comes with some perks and... well, this is a canon written by Gen Urobuchi, so it also comes with a fair few downfalls.

Like all Puella Magi, Kazumi has extremely heightened physical prowess. She is much stronger than a normal human and has much more endurance, able to take a blow that would incapacitate a normal person and come back swinging. She's also shown to be incredibly fast and agile and with some serious jumping abilities -- in chapter two of the manga, she quite easily goes hopping along the rooftops of Asunaro as a shortcut. The downside to this is that her magic as well as her entire physical being is dependent on her Soul Gem and if it exceeds a distance of 100 meters from her body, she will, effectively, die until the Soul Gem is returned to her. Should she use too much magic without clensing her Soul Gem with a grief seed, it will corrupt and Kazumi will turn into a Witch, killing her in the process. She can also be killed should her Soul Gem be shattered.

Kazumi's weapon of choice is a large staff topped with a chunky horizontal cross, easily twice her height that is apparently made of metal. It works as both a close-range melee weapon and can be used to fire magical beams (which seems to be her main use of it). Her attacks have a large range and excellent accuracy and are shown to be powerful enough to cripple most witches. Her final attack is Limiti Esterni (Outer Limit) and in the final chapter, she is shown performing a combo attack with Umika and Kaoru called Meteora Finale (Final Meteor). She also seems able to create pathways made of elaborate lace patterns, a technique she calls "Scalia a Paradiso" (Stairway to Heaven). Curiously, Umika and Kaoru's Puella Magi forms are "upgraded thanks to Kazumi's magic", according to Kyuubey, which is apparently tied to her wish of being able to move forward and not a conscious power of hers.

+ Kazumi can speak Italian -- something she picked up from Michiru. She's fluent enough to be able to carry a conversation... and to be able to come up with dramatic names for her attacks, of course.

+ She's a mind-blowing cook, as evidenced several times through the series. Not only is she fantastic at improvising (as chapter one shows, where she makes a delicious beef stroganoff without even knowing she's able to cook) but if give her a recipe and she'll not only improve on it, but she'll make your tastebuds weep with delight. Her signature dish is bittersweet strawberry risotto but she's good at cooking anything she turns her hand to.

+ Kazumi's also quite the waitress - she's able to cook and serve enough food for six other girls entirely on her own without any apparent difficulty and easily keeps the food coming while also putting together not only her own lunch, but a huge literal sack of snacks for Kaoru and Umika who were absent, which presumably means she's also fairly good at multitasking.

+/- Even after all her time with Kaoru and Umika and at Holly Heights, Kazumi is still very much the kind of girl who would rather avoid confrontation than face it head on, if possible. While she won't try to shirk confrontation if it's about something she's passionate about, she'd still rather not rock the boat too much.

+/- Kazumi is excellent with people -- she's not shy at all and she's always eager to help out in any situation she can. However, her eagerness to make friends can lead her to be a bit too forward and pushy without realizing she's crossing a line.

+/- She's determined and energetic -- give her a job and she'll complete it to the best of her ability. However, she's also kind of stubborn, so it's possible she might dig her heels in and get herself in trouble if she does it at the wrong time.

- Kazumi's eagerness to make friends can lead her to be easily fooled by unsavory individuals who are good at pretending they're anything but. And her loyalty and stubbornness might mean she could be manipulated by a person with less than stellar intentions.

- Kazumi is a little naive - she tends to take things at face value, meaning she's not very good at thinking outside of the box. She can be tricked and manipulated by people who know what they're doing, and can be bamboozled with complicated enough riddles or wordplay.
