there was a point when we were cool
WHO: Eren and Jean
WHAT: meeting Mama Kirstein
WARNING(S): probably smut somewhere down the line
Eren had been in Jean's town for nearly a week now and time was ticking. There was still another week or so until he had to go back home but Jean's mother had been bugging him every day to figure out when she could meet her son's long distance boyfriend, especially after all the Skype chats she'd walked in on in the past.
Jean was nervous. He knew Eren and his mom would probably get along but he hadn't introduced anyone to his parents since his last relationship, the details of which Eren only knew little. His stomach was in knots as they sat in his car outside his childhood home, Jean staring at the front door and then looking to Eren in the passenger seat.
"Please tell me I'm not the only one who's really freaking out right now." He laughed, running a hand through his hair. It was starting to get long, maybe he should have gotten a haircut before coming here. "You seem a lot calmer than me for once."

"Relax, babe," he said, smiling. "I'm kinda excited....Nervous, yeah, but excited." He leaned across and kissed his cheek, nuzzling at him...and intentionally mussing his hair.
"Come on." He nudged him, smiling at him. "Let's go."
no subject
"Jerk," he muttered under his breath, though it was soft and not so serious. With another deep breath, Jean nodded and finally stepped out of the car.
The house was typical New England middle class, white picket fence and all. Jean grew up as an only child, spoiled by both of his parents, and while he already knew they accepted him for who he was it was always still scary for him to bring someone home. He figured that meant he really cared for Eren though.
"Alright, let's go," he confirmed, grabbing Eren's hand when his boyfriend was beside him, and walking up the brick path ring the bell. "Remember what I told you... compliment her cooking, and you're golden."
no subject
"If she cooks better than you, that's not hard," he teased, grinning. Jean always insisted his cooking paled next to his mother's. Eren believed him, and had intentionally been light on food through the day to be good and hungry when they got there.
Still...now that they were at the doorstep, he fussed with his hair a little, green eyes shifting back and forth. He rubbed his thumb over the back of Jean's hand, reassuring himself a bit.
no subject
"Jean-bo!"
A short woman wearing her Sunday best stepped out and enveloped her son in a hug, as if she hadn't seen him in weeks. Her hair was a soft brown similar to Jean's roots, her demeanor warm and inviting, giving Jean some squeezes for good measure before pulling away to place her attention on Eren.
"Oh, I'm so happy you're here," she began, immediately grabbing Eren into a hug that was neither awkward nor held back. She rubbed his back and patted it a few times before pulling back and patting his cheek next, clearly excited. "We have so much to catch up on. You are twice as handsome in person."
Jean refrained from groaning and just gave a nervous little chuckle instead, his embarrassment laced with relief. "Mom... can we actually come inside before you alert the entire neighborhood?" He grumbled, tugging at Eren's hand to lead them inside.
no subject
"Th-thank you, ma'am," he said, his voice twanging just a little. He'd found people up here kind of liked that. Still, he was all too happy to follow Jean inside. He'd seen portions of this house during their calls while Jean was there, but not much more than a couple of walls and a shaky view of the hallway as Jean walked. The place was gorgeous, as warm and inviting as their host was, and it amused Eren to see that Jean's own decor style had its basis here.
And sweet heavens above he could already smell dinner. His stomach growled noisily, and he pressed closer to Jean's side as though that might mask it.
no subject
And then she was off to go make sure her potatoes weren't burning, leaving Jean to tug on Eren's hand and offer him a reassuring smile.
"I'll give you a tour," he said, leading his boyfriend down the entrance hallway and into the living room. Each room was furnished with a cozy, warm touch, clearly more of his mother's influence than his father's. Pictures of Jean in various stages of his life - especially childhood - littered the walls and tables, along with other family pictures.
"So... so far so good," he murmured as they stood in front of an unlit fireplace, fat baby Jean staring at them from various photo frames. "Dad's probably upstairs. He'll be down soon."
no subject
"Man you were fat," he laughed, nodding at the picture of a chubby toddler Jean. He set it back down, looking over a roughly age arranged set of school photos, snickering. "Aaah there we go." He picked up another photo. "High school's when you got hot." He reached over and pinched his cheek.
"Such a cutie." Still grinning, he set the frame down, hand once more reaching for Jean's to squeeze it firmly.
no subject
Squeezing Eren's hand back, he bit a corner of his lip, looking at a small picture of him and Marco sitting in one of those multiple-photo frames. He ignored it in favor of leaning into Eren, hoping he didn't notice.
"I've never seen baby pics of you, y'know," he commented, curious and trying to turn the attention on his boyfriend. "Do you even have any? Does Mikasa?"
no subject
"We've got them," he said after a moment. "We all had a bunch of things from home we kept boxed up. Folks who took us in kept personal stuff like that safe for us. It's all boxed up in our closets...Haven't looked at it in years." And the idea was just a little terrifying to him. But..maybe it'd be good for him. It was the closest he could get to something like this with Jean, and the only way to introduce him to his parents, as it were.
no subject
Tugging his boyfriend closer, Jean snuck a quick kiss to his temple before pulling him away from the mantle. "C'mon. Let's go help in the kitchen." And then a wry smirk. "I'll show you my room after dinner."
no subject
That smirk made him grin, hand going to Jean's once more and squeezing firmly. "Oh yeah? Well that sounds fun."
Following him to the kitchen, he once more gave the room a once over. It was so...cozy, almost like something you saw on those goofy family sitcoms. Glancing at Jean, he smiles a bit and cleared his throat.
"So uh, anything we can help you with, Mrs. Kirstein?"
no subject
Jean's mother seemed baffled that they wanted to help, stirring a soup over the stove while she waved toward the oven. "If you could take out the pork chops, that would be wonderful." She said, pointedly looking at her son as to not make Eren do the work. "Be careful, it's hot."
"I know, it's the oven." Groaning, Jean went over to grab the mitts, leaning over to pull out a tray of sizzling pork, the broth still bubbling a bit at the edges. "Thank god I'm not dating a vegan, am I right?"
no subject
"You ever heard of a southern vegan?" Eren said, grinning broadly. "I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy..." He thought a moment, then shrugged and laughed. "Who am I kidding, I just love food." He found a place off to one side to stand, hoping he'd either be given a task or at least be out of the way of the cooking.
no subject
Just looking over and seeing Eren in his mom's kitchen was pretty freaking amazing in itself.
"Do you know how to mash potatoes, dear?" Came Mrs. Kirstein's voice around her son's back, smiling to Eren while holding up a mashing tool. "You seem tense, it will help relieve some of the stress."
no subject
"Sorry," he said, shifting his weight as he forced the wavy wires into the potatoes. "I..Well, this is kind of the first time I've met a boyfriend's parents." He glanced at Jean, letting himself admire the angles of his face for a moment. He was hot...damn he was hot. And Jean loved him, and his parents had pitched in on the trip cost this time, so he had that going for him...
No reason to be so damned nervous.
no subject
"Just wait until you meet the whole family during Christmas," he smirked. "You'll need all the practice you can get."
Cousins. Aunts. Uncles. Babies. The works. Jean was confident they'd all love Eren though.
A couple minutes later he heard the creak of the wooden stairs as his dad left his study to finally come downstairs, probably having to finish up some last minute work. Jean was more nervous about Eren meeting his dad because at least he'd seen Jean's mom through Skype before, but this would be the first time his father met Eren... at all. Jean instinctively stood up straighter and then smiled when he came into the kitchen, a man resembling Jean in height and build.
"Hey, Dad! I was wondering where you were hiding." He chuckled nervously, meeting him for a brief hug before turning to Eren and gripping his boyfriend's arm gently. "This is Eren. Uh... Eren, this is my dad. Obviously."
have a stupid titan icon for no reason
When Jean's dad entered, Eren tensed a bit. The change in Jean's posture and demeanor was almost worrying. Did his Dad not approve? Or was he just a hardass or something...Eren's memories of his own father were dim, but he remembered him being a sweet, gentle man. His mother had always been the stern one, funny enough. Turning a smile to the older man, he offered his hand.
"Nice to meet you," he said, trying not to look as nervous as he felt.
such a lovable face
"My son has told me a lot about you. I knew when he wouldn't stop talking about you, that we'd be meeting one day." He chuckled, especially as Jean's entire face turned as bright as his ears.
"Don't give away all my secrets, it's embarrassing," he huffed, stepping closer to Eren almost in an attempt to hide, even though he was a couple inches taller.
no subject
"You raised a good kid," he said. He glanced between Jean's parents, seeing shades of Jean's features in both of them. He smiled a bit, chuckling softly. "I'm really blessed to have met him."
no subject
"You're all embarrassing, even you. Oh my god." Jean laughed, nudging Eren and rubbing the back of his neck in nervous habit.
"I thought you like all the attention on you, son," his father said sarcastically, chuckling again as he went to give his wife a kiss on the cheek. "Eren is just being very polite."
no subject
"Just tellin the truth," he said, shrugging a bit. "Think he's stuck with me for a good long while." He flashed his lover a smile, then looked back to the lady of the house. "Anything else I can do?"
no subject
Jean's mom seemed flattered by Eren's willingness to help but waved him off, smiling wide. "No, no, don't you worry. You two go sit down, everything is ready!"
no subject
"Thanks again for making dinner for us," he said, ever polite where adults were involved (not like he WASN'T an adult, but all the same). His stomach growled loudly once more, and he chuckled almost sheepishly, pressing his hand to it.
no subject
Sitting beside Eren, he secretly kept holding his hand under the table, a lifeline to quell any nerves. When his boyfriend's stomach rumbled he couldn't help but snort, his parents putting all the awesome-smelling dishes on the table.
"Knowing your appetite, you're gonna devour half this table all on your own." A grin. Just the way into his mother's heart. "Gonna get so spoiled."
no subject
"Jean's told me legends about your cooking," he said, chuckling and grinning warmly at her. "So far it looks like he wasn't exaggerating." He squeezed his lover's hand again, looking over at him. "He's been cooking for me, and I'm so not ready to go back to TV dinners and ramen." Talk about spoiled.
no subject
With a pointed look toward her son, she began to pass around some veggies and whatnot, making Jean sigh as he accepted a casserole.
"I suggested that too! Trust me, if everything goes well, he won't have to worry about that." A pause, Jean scooping some food onto his plate before nervously looking between his parents. "We... were trying to think of when he can move up here."
no subject
He paused when Jean mentioned him moving, glancing at his lover before nodding in affirmation.
"Yeah. I live with friends right now, but..." He chuckled, blushing a bit. "Gotta go our separate ways sometime, right?"
no subject
"How soon would that be?" Jean's father asked curiously, looking at Eren specifically. "That's a far move. You must be serious."
no subject
"Yeah," Eren said. "We still argue an' yell a lot, but that's how we are." He rubbed his thumb over the back of his boyfriend's knuckles. "..We've been talking about it since I came to visit the first time. It's...pretty much all I can think about." He chuckled warmly, glancing between Jean's parents.
no subject
"If you need any help... I know my wife helped you get here for this visit. If you're both serious, perhaps we can do something."
Jean's eyes widened at that, his heart hammering just as hard as Eren's. "You don't have to do that, Dad. Eren and I have jobs, we can save up."
no subject
"He's right," he said, glancing at his lover before he spoke again. "But...I wouldn't turn down help. Might make things happen a little faster." Hell if it meant he could move in one month sooner, that was something. He chuckled, ducking his head a bit and eating a bit more before he spoke again.
"I've gotta finish college before we can do anything," he said. "Still got least a year and a half worth of credit hours to get." He rolled his eyes. "Sick of school."
no subject
"You can always transfer up here if you need to, you know," he encouraged, giving his fingers a squeeze. "But it's your choice. I know you probably wanna graduate with your peers, right?"
no subject
"Here we are yackin while the food's gettin cold," he said, laughing.
no subject
"What are you studying?" His father asked, already getting into Interrogation Dad mode. Eren would probably be answering a lot of questions tonight, though Jean had prepped his parents ahead of time to not ask about Eren's parents. At least not today.
