[community profile] birdfeeding is a community started on January 1, 2023. It's all about birdfeeding, birdwatching, and other topics relating to birds. It also touches on nature in general, and observations that may effect bird activity such as local weather. Both text and image posts are welcome. Now is a great time to join as hungry birds are easy to attract with a feeder.

Community resources include posts about birding events, nurseries that sell seeds or plants attractive to birds, bird identification apps, the benefits of birdwatching, and other useful materials. Check out the anchor posts from Three Weeks for Dreamwidth.

Summary: Will needs a date to his mom's wedding. Mike volunteers.

"I have an idea," says Mike.

Ice cubes form in Will's stomach. "How dangerous is it? Like, should I call Dustin to talk you down, or should I call Nancy to be ready to drive us to the hospital?"

"No," says Mike, "you can't tell anyone or it won't work."

"Or what won't work?" Will asks. It's like picking up a rock you know a spider will be under.

Mike gets up and closes Will's door. Hopper doesn't make them keep it open but sometimes Will does anyway, because every now and then lying around alone with Mike on his bed just makes his chest ache too much. If the door is open he can tell himself You can't do anything right now, someone will see.

Mike leans back against the door. His eyes are lit up with that special maniacal gleam that the Wheelers get right before they do something insane, like when Nancy says, "Then we have to go kill Vecna ourselves," or whatever. "Take me to the wedding," says Mike.

"Yeah," says Will slowly, "you'll be at the wedding. Obviously."

"As your date."

Reccer's Notes: They've fixed Hawkins' Upside Down problem (though this predates the final season), and it's the kids' senior year, and Will is worried his mom is worried about him, so Mike hatches a plan to be Will's (fake) date to Joyce and Hopper's wedding because of course he does. That means we've got Will pretending to pretend he's into Mike and Mike playing gay chicken against himself and...losing? winning? both?? Neither of them is doing a great job (or any job) communicating, but their fake relationship thrives and does what all the best fake relationships do, becomes real. A sweet friends-to-lovers romance with just the right amount of agonizing feelings.

Zach Sullivan again on Heated Rivalry

Zach Sullivan was interviewed on the "Duke's Download" podcast about being openly queer in ice hockey, and his decidedly mixed feelings about Heated Rivalry. I liked listening to what Zach had to say, and was impressed by the thoughtfulness that obviously goes into his answers (I think the podcast host could stand to say less and interrupt less).

February is flying by, the university term-time intensity is very high, my life is work, ice hockey, occasional time with my family. I did switch things up and also try out a couple of kpop dance classes in a relatively light week (the university has a KPop society!) and they were exhausting and fun in the best way. Now to find the time to go back before the end of term.

Or: Ilya Rozanov goes to the internet for dating advice

Reccer's Notes: This is a long (9 chapters) social media epistolary fic based on Reddit, where Ilya asks the internet for advice before the tuna melt hookup. It's funny, very cleverly done, and the responses from Reddit users are often hilarious. We start with Ilya's post (he's orangespyder617 - his sports car name & Boston area code), and later, Shane (gingerale_MTL) also separately posts after he's bolted in panic and is dating Rose, and has realized he's really messed things up. There's some fun for the Reddit users in speculating about who these two rich, inept in love guys might be, and also later after Shane posts as Ilya has wiped his former thread by then but some users remember it and join the dots. Rose herself (kidnapped4times) also posts wanting advice about how to tactfully tell her boyfriend he's gay, and finally Ilya posts again. It reads exactly like Reddit, although I suspect with way fewer trolls, and the users often post memes and links to vids which work, and add to the realism. Throughout, Ilya and Shane amply demonstrate their ineptitude in love, starting with POSTING TO REDDIT ABOUT IT AT ALL! I grinned a lot.

Today's project was creating an enclosure behind the log garden. I dragged some more logs back there so I can dump dead leaves inside. That way, they'll stay put, create habitat, hold moisture, and remain available in case I want some leaf litter during the warm season. This is a good use for old logs if you have any lying around.

cumbia, krucial, snowy owl, sturgeon

Cumbia
Sometimes I have perfectly wonderful dreams--this morning, for example. I dreamed I was invited onto the dance floor to dance cumbia. I've had exactly one cumbia lesson in my life--not even a whole lesson; it was tacked onto a salsa lesson. But in the dream, I put aside all timidity, joined my partner, and it was perfect. We were so in sync; we improvised--I can catch the feeling just writing these words. This had the same joy as dreams of flying: incredible, freeing movement.

Krucial
The cashier was a young guy with fluffy hair pulled back in a pony tail. His name tag said "Krucial."
"That's an awesome name," I said.
"My mom gave it to me. It was on a wrapper," he said. [Maybe related to this: Krucial Rapid Response]
"That's great," I said. "You're crucial for your mom!"
"Awww, thank you!" he said, and and we high-fived.

Snowy Owl
A snowy owl has been hanging out near where I live. All the birders in the area are going there and taking pictures of it, and some of these have filtered into my social media, and they're magnificent, like this one, by someone named Dale Woods:
Snowy owl in a snowy field of corn stubble

Sturgeon
Elsewhere on social media someone recommended the story "The Man Who Lost the Sea" (1959), by Theodore Sturgeon. I've never actually read anything by him, and the person linked to a 2009 reprint in Strange Horizons, so I gave it a read. The poster said it involved a surprising twist. Well not really: I understood the situation halfway through. But I liked the story all the same: the writing was lovely, and I wanted to see how the main character would realize the truth. This, very near the end, struck me especially:
For no farmer who fingers the soil with love and knowledge, no poet who sings of it, artist, contractor, engineer, even child bursting into tears at the inexpressible beauty of a field of daffodils—none of these is as intimate with Earth as those who live on, live with, breathe and drift in its seas.

Husband is on his way home. Uncertain about what time he'll arrive here other than 'late'.

I've been making a spinach lasagne so there's something in the fridge he can heat up if he needs it. The word 'lasagne' is doing some heavy lifting here, because when I did the shopping for it, I confidently assumed there was a whole box of it in the cupboard.

There was not.

There was enough for one layer, so I had to improvise for the other layers and have used spaghetti. I mean, pasta is pasta. It'll be fine.*

Funeral thoughts )

*It is, in fact, fine. A little more unruly to serve, though.

**It used to be a rule that the funeral should take place within a week of the death, so that's what we're used to here. I've never arranged one myself, so I can't really say what the difference is. Maybe it just went so much quicker because it had to? I'm informed, however, by a coworker who lost her father last year that this rule is in fact no longer in effect.

Suprised

"Do You Love the Color of the Sky?"

It's extremely excellent to come across a short story completely at random, from someone I don't know at all, and then fall in love with it. (I love reading stories from people I know, too, of course! But in those cases, I already know I'm likely to love the story, whereas when it's by someone I don't know, it's an unexpected surprise.)

"Do You Love the Color of the Sky?" by Rachel Rosen was just such a story. In it, the curator of a museum that collects art and artifacts from the multiverse's doomed timelines (and who has a pet dodo from a timeline where dodos weren't hunted to extinction) is confronted by a thief from one of those doomed timelines who wants to take back what's either a plundered item or a rescued item, depending on what side of museum discourse you fall on. The multiverse is a great place for museum discourse, it turns out!

But beyond that, the story's just got a great narrative voice and some killer lines, such as...
Hadn't this always been the pattern of civilization? Tea and bullets were undeniably intertwined.

and
"But your world is dying."
I hadn't expected her smile. The bullet had been gentler.
"Every world dies," the thief said. "Even yours."

Here's how the thief is described on first appearance:
You can sometimes tell where [a multiverse traveler is] from at a glance. A gleaming bull’s horn on a chain around the throat, or a shangrak tattoo. A Hapsburg jaw or a colony of melanomas, if it’s one of the worse timelines. Not this woman. She had burst from the fire fully formed and innocent of all history.

And the various artifacts themselves, and the possibilities (or tragedies) of the various timelines are great.

Free to read here: "Do You Love the Color of the Sky?"

Rachel Rosen has also apparently written a short story titled, "What if we kissed while sinking a billionaire's yacht?" which short story lends its title to Issue One of Antifa Journal, with this great cover. To read the story requires purchasing the journal, but as an ebook it's only $4.99, so I'm sore tempted.

Age: Mid-20s

I mostly post about: Lately, I've mostly used Dreamwidth for life updates related to my quest to get a teaching certification in my area. I also use it for fandom exchanges and general writing community.

My hobbies are: Writing is the big one. I write poetry and original short fiction. In fandom spaces, I tend to write a lot of short form erotica.

My fandoms are: Many and varied. Some of the favorites at the moment are BBC Merlin, October Daye, the Young Justice cartoon, and Wooden Overcoats.

I'm looking to meet people who: I like sharing this space with a wide variety of people. Some of my favorite members of my circle post recipes, media reviews, or meaty fandom meta, but other favorites are just sharing links to interesting news articles or talking about life.

My posting schedule tends to be: It's been sporadic in the past, but I've been trying to get in the habit of posting a few times a week. It's been grounding.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Don't be a Trump supporter, anti-LGBTQ, or a climate change denier.

Before adding me, you should know:
I'm polyamorous and live in a tight-knit community that includes many platonic and romantic life partners. Sometimes I post about US politics, but that's going to be fairly rare. I am quite left-wing, because my government's right-wing social policies negatively impact my community and my family. If you show up on my reading page and ask a question in your post, I'll probably answer it in the comments.

I mostly post about: Journal entries about writing, social medias/the internet and anything creative, witchcraft, what I'm reading/what I've read, etc. Anything that I'm wanting to write about really.

My hobbies are: Reading, writing, making arts and crafts, drawing, anything that tickles my creative brain. And also watching junk TV because I contain multitude.

My fandoms are Mo Dao Zu Shi and Scum Villain (anything MXTX but I haven't finished Heaven Officials Blessings yet). I've also dipped my toes in Stardew Valley and Bridgerton as a fandom, although I haven't written anything for those yet. I'm Deadfandomswriter on AO3 if you wanna take a look.

I'm looking to meet people who: Are open minded and care about building a sense of community through active participation in their spaces. Are creative and love to see magic in their every day lives (I consider birdwatching to be its own kind of magic for the sense of wonder it brings, for example).

My posting schedule tends to be: So far a couple times a week, but I don't really schedule those.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:Bigots, small minded people

Before adding me, you should know: Other than everything else above, I'm queer, and that probably will colour what I write about more than once in a while. I also do not speak to my family anymore (although my family-in-law have welcomed me warmly), and that also can come up, so if it's something that is uncomfortable for you, you might want to avoid my blog. Oh! And my first language is French!
