CHARACTERS: Sheva (
partnerinheels) and Nikolai (
sturmhond)
DATE: 2|5 (Backdated to Week 13, Day 4)
RATING: PG-13 just in case.
SUMMARY: Sheva shows Nikolai her library and kind of apologizes.
[It doesn't take Sheva long to arrive outside of the classrooms, as she had been on her way when she texted him. The plan being to clean a short list of particular weapons and then do a quick inventory. Honestly, sometimes she felt like an accountant more than anything.
Especially since she's been gun 'collecting' since the island.
She smiled when she saw him, giving a quick nod of her head in greeting before motioning them both inside. Don't mind her immediately taking the lead as they enter the building.]
Did you see what happened after you found that store's stash?
[Oh just friendly conversation that may hint at an 'I told you so' of sorts. However, there's no anger in her voice, just neutral discussion. What's done is done.]

Now, he approaches her and lifts an amused eyebrow at that question. ]
I did.
One week that store was in our midst, and now it's gone. Exactly why I wanted to raid it in the first place; I am glad we got something out of it while we could.
[ In other words, if she'd expected him to be sorry, she was going to be disappointed. He leans against the wall, expression relaxed with the hint of a smile curving at his lips. ]
Now, I believe you promised me a library.

[She states simply, knowing he wouldn't be sorry but wanting him to at least hear of the other explanation. To her, it's the likely one, but they weren't going to see eye to eye on that.
Her eyebrow raises at his casual stance before she abruptly enters the building, walking with a purpose. The purpose being she wanted him to have to catch up at first for nothing more than reminding her of just how Wesker liked to get under her skin. Self-important loungers the both of them.
Only she actually liked Nikolai more of less, and she didn't want to kill him with her own bare hands.
Certain he'll catch up and then easily keep pace with her, Sheva navigates the hallways and stairs until they're outside her storage closet. It looks shabby and uninteresting, barely worth a notice save for the two locks securing it. Two separate keys unlock the door, and she turns her attention pointedly towards him before opening the door.]
I'd like to go on record requesting you refrain from making a network post or wagging your mouth to just anyone about this.
[Seriously Nikolai. She's worked long and hard, sacrificing her safety and her health to collect some of these weapons. Don't ruin this for her somehow.]

You know, I can just go back to my workshop. I have plenty to be getting along with.
I understand that you didn't like what I said. Frankly I don't care who disagrees with me; I have a job to do and I'll do it how I see fit. You're going to have to take me as I am, lovely, or not take me at all. It's up to you.
[ It's not the first time he's been reckless, and it likely won't be the last. He wouldn't be Sturmhond if he didn't take risks, and being Sturmhond is a necessity here. Essentially, he's unlikely to behave, and if she's not going to trust him as a result, he'd rather know. ]
I'm not going to lead anyone to your personal space, whether you still want me here or not.

Don't worry, you've made that quite clear.
[At his promise, Sheva unlocks both locks, replacing the keys around her neck, tucking the necklace back beneath her clothes for safekeeping. Hand on the doorknob, she sends him one more meaningful look, lingering seriously on his features as if she were judging the weight of his words.
With a turn of her wrist and a push, the door pushes open, revealing wall to wall storage space. It's a mixture of scavenged furniture like bookcases and filing cabinets as well as handmade units from looted materials. Most of these units held weapons of various makes, models, time periods, and value. It's clear that she favors firearms overall, but there's a decent selection of knives and other melee weapons.
The organization seems to be by shelf and then type of weapon. Maybe if he asks, she'll explain it to him. Though he'd notice that the unit with the grenade launcher, her high powered rifles, and plasma rifles resides within arm's reach of the very small desk sitting in the back with a stool. The desk is well organized and bare essentials, including supplies to maintain and clean her library.
Sheva watches his reaction while shutting the door behind him when he enter. Eventually she clears her throat.] I used to have a middle man to move weapons to people when the threat level increased, but... They're gone. [Whether they're dead or finally returned home, Sheva is uncertain, but did it really matter? She's still missing that key person that can supply weapons relatively undetected amongst the other captive.]
I always wanted to have a supply in case they took the weapons on our persons.

By comparison to this, Nikolai's workspace is organised chaos, filled with projects and weapons that he's making, swords that haven't yet been sharpened or guns still lying in pieces. This is very different. Not a workspace, but a store. He can see why she calls it a library. And even though he both makes and uses guns, even though the grenades earn from him an appreciative glance, it's to the blades that he wanders. They're what get most of his attention, especially the swords.
He looks but doesn't touch. ]
It's an impressive collection. Undamaged by their recent purge, I see.
[ Which implies she hadn't found them here. It's a collection started a while back. After a moment he turns to look at her, focused on her now. ]
What do you do now when there's a threat? How do you arm people? I'm taking it you work separately to Master Chief. He has his own armoury. [ Nikolai has after all been stocking it. ]

Some were donated, but most were scavenged when we docked to other worlds for changes in scenery. I few I traded for with Kernos' merchants, and sometimes Compass made weapons available on the ship. That's how they liked to tell us trouble was coming. Though they never quite armed us well enough for said troubles.
[Sheva sighs at the next set of questions.] I've been doing this long before him, but I'm not some seven foot tall super soldier with an army. It's just me now, but I'm a firm believer in not putting all my eggs in one basket.
[While she tries to hide it, it's obviously something that's weighing down on her for multiple reasons. Loss of friends and allies were an obvious weight, but it's clear Sheva knows just how much of a risk she's taking even if she won't admit it.] I used to supply the resistance leaders at the time, and they'd see to it others were armed. Or, I simply worked on the honor system and word of mouth or oblique network announcements. Now I tend to funnel through Kirk if he needs anything.
[There's a pause as she runs a finger over the scope of a particularly heavy duty rifle.] I need a better system, but I don't like blatantly advertising over the network. [She levels a serious expression, worry etched around the edges of her features.] I may have an arsenal, but in the end I'm one person.

Kirk's name gets stored away in his head, for future analysis, though he doesn't react to it. It's just a connection he'll make, Sheva with Kirk. He'll aim to know that name better.
When she finishes, he stops moving around the room and turns to her, expression somewhat more serious than he's used to showing around her. ]
Why are you telling me this? [ He asks that gently, curiously. ] Why do you want me to see it?
Do you think I didn't take you seriously, before, when you told me what you did?

I'm running out of allies. [Sheva finally admits without looking at him. The more time she's spent captive, the more people she's lost. They were friends and family, squad mates and charges, and as time continued forward, so did their disappearances. Sometimes they'd return, with or without memories from this place, or even from different time periods all together.
Eventually, a numbness had settled over her, and the losses became part of the scenery and a danger to avoid. Every time she felt herself caring or getting close to anyone here, she felt as if they were already one foot in the grave or out the door.
And she hated herself for it, for losing the shreds of optimism that had managed to survive these hells. For not reaching out as actively as she once did. For not trusting in others as easily as before.
She was trying to trust now, even though she suspects it'll end poorly, as always.]
And I knew you would appreciate it.
[Plus, she didn't suspect he'd steal anything from her.]
Nothing like that. I just wanted to explain to someone I suppose.

He notes the way she doesn’t look at him, the way she seems reluctant to admit to this. She probably thinks that it makes her look weak, somehow, or vulnerable.
But it rings true enough, and that’s what matters to him. ]
Allies are what I need here.
Sheva, I want to help. I want to get out of this place as much as anyone, that’s what I want to work towards. But while we’re here, you can be certain I’ll fight. I don’t want to be against you, if I don’t have to be.
no subject
When he speaks, Sheva finally musters up the courage to return her gaze, keeping it as neutral as possible while he spoke.]
I've had my fill of enemies to last lifetimes that I don't have, so any help would be welcomed.
[Count himself up an ally, officially.]

[ He smiles at her, before glancing around the library again. ]
By this stage, I have a decent stockpile of my own. It's good to know this is here. I think we'll need it, someday, when they finally decide to move against us.

[She appears thoughtful, remembering the previous times the Project Head had came down to 'discipline' the captives.]
no subject
True. I suppose that means we'll have to keep trying to annoy them. I'll warn you now, I might well enjoy that part, Sheva.

But I do have skill in aggravating people. [ A smile. ] Perhaps you’ve noticed.
no subject
I never noticed. [Sarcasm all over.] I'm fairly certain it's your main goal in life.

For you, at least.
no subject
Just a little. ]
There's someone here that I need to protect. Someone from my world, who I need to ensure returns there.
Her name is Alina Starkov. I don't know if you know her.
no subject
I have not met her, but I will do the same, if I see her in trouble. Do you have a picture?
[Or a feed of video from the network, she's not picky and quite serious with her offer.]
no subject
[ He checks. This actually takes longer than a moment, because as it turns out, Alina doesn't like to show her face and most of what he finds is voice.
But eventually, he pulls up a public video from two weeks ago, and turns his device around for Sheva to see. ]
She's a little shy of the camera. Quiet, too. But recognisable, always dressed in blue and gold.
no subject
They're good colors together. [A determined sort of nod follows.] I'll keep an eye out for her. Does she know how to use any weapons or defend herself?
no subject
[ So why is he worried about her, then?
Well, that's complicated. ]
But you asked about my goals. Her safety is perhaps the greatest one, here.
