CHARACTERS: Equius Zahhak (
brokenbowfetish) and Kyo Sōma (
wedged)
DATE: April 1st (Week 16, day 6 (backdated))
RATING: PG, possibly PG-13 but probably not
SUMMARY: Equius goes to burn the bodies of some friends. Kyo thinks he's disposing of his victims. Hilarity(??????) ensues.
It's been a long day.
Equius is covered in fresh dirt, clinging to his skin like a wet blanket. The rain that's been coming down on and off throughout the day hasn't helped. The graves were like mud and wet clay, harder to dig through, but he'd persevered, sacrificing his only clean clothes. This was important, though.
The bodies are in his sylladex, three of them. Nepeta's, of course - it was the first he'd gone after. Then he'd seen Kanda's grave, and then Julien's, and he'd rounded them up, too, because they deserved it. It had been exhausting work. This was important, though.
The rain's stopped for now, and he's not sure if that's better or worse. Maybe the rain would have washed some of the dirt off. But did it really matter? No. Guess not.
He's got Nepeta's coat on, and her hat. He doesn't know what possessed him to take them off and wear them. Maybe he was hoping they would still smell like her. They don't, they smell like dirt, but he can pretend.
He tries to skirt the campus, but it's in the way of where he wants to go, so he ends up cutting through it. maybe there's a cave out in the woods somewhere he could put her. She'd like that.

When the rain stops — he hopes forever; he feels in his bones that it'll be for just a little while — he's outside immediately, putting on shoes and heading out the door, searching for sunlight, a parting of the clouds. his whole body seems to wake up, muscles relaxing, aches fading — he feels almost content for a few seconds, taking a few steps in no particular direction and then veering towards the abandoned track — and before he gets there, his lifting mood sputters and crashes to a stop.
Ff course he recognises Equius: he stands out enough even without their past encounters clouding Kyo's memories. He's not terribly inclined to go speak to him (he might be loud and argumentative, but there's no reason to pick fights over nothing) — but, wait, is that? yes — he recognises Nepeta's clothing. He knows they're friends (he really knows it) — but, that's weird, no matter how you look at it. It just looks ridiculous on him. What is he doing?
He doesn't approach, but he does track him visually from a distance.

A street blocks the campus from the forest but the cultists have been quiet on it, and he's able to pass through unhindered. He heads a little ways into the foliage, but knows he won't be able to go much further than this before the ill effects of the woods set in.
He's not going to find a cave. He realizes that now.
Here's as good a place as any.

It's those damn clothes. Why would he be wearing them? Kyo hasn't seen Nepeta in a while; not since… well, since he'd made her go away… leave him alone forever. His stomach clenches. He doesn't regret it. It'll be better this way. Equius was right about that much. Still… he follows Equius with his eyes, and then finds himself walking after him when he's almost out of sight, drawn by feelings he doesn't want to put a name to. Why are they heading into the city? Tendrils of fear creep over him — but he continues following him, pulled by the faint, irrational idea that Equius will lead him to Nepeta. Not that he wants to see her ever again.
Kyo hesitates again at the edge of the forest, but it's too late to give up now. When Equius comes to a stop, he thinks he's been spotted and backs up, justifications racing through his mind alongside confusion over why he's stopped here. But he doesn't appear to have been caught. Spotting a tree with low branches, Kyo backs up slightly and climbs up it easily, thinking to get a better view… and remain out of immediate sight. Maybe he should turn back; obviously no one is here but Equius. But the idea of going back through that sliver of the city alone…

Once he has the fire going, he takes out the bodies, and lays them out on the grass. Julien, who's been in there awhile, and started to decay a bit (it doesn't seem to bother Equius), and Kanda, and finally Nepeta. He takes the most care with her, hesitating a little while she's still in his arms.
He keeps thinking she may wake up. 'Don't be silly, Equius. I was only taking a catnap.'
But she doesn't, and he lays her down next to the other two. Then he goes back to Julien, and picks him up to put him in the fire first.

What is he doing?
Even after it becomes clear, Kyo watches — curious, now — until somehow, suddenly, there's a body. Kyo doesn't recognise the man, or the one that appears after, but his heart seems to have grown cold — what is he doing? Why — how — he doesn't understand.
And then Equius is holding Nepeta, and she's not moving. His fingers dig into the bark of his tree, his eyes wide. What — how — she's —
Their last conversation, their last argument, flashes through his head. How — that wasn't supposed to happen! That's not the way it's supposed to go! When did she die? What is he doing? It's not supposed to be like that! And then Equius puts one of the bodies in the fire —
Really, he almost falls out of the tree. He lands on his feet due only to the cat's influence, graceful without intention. He's so shocked, so frightened, that he wants to run away — but it's anger that sweeps in when Equius begins to burn the bodies, and before he has time to think or otherwise react he yells, "What the hell are you doing!"

He turns, and sees Kyo, and he's angry in a flash. He remembers their last argument too, and he feels like the other boy shouldn't be here now. Kyo didn't care about Nepeta, he cared about Nepeta, and this intrusion is unforgivable.
All that said, he's not quite sure how to react. Julien's in the fire now, and the smell of burning flesh and hair is already filling the air around him. Should he keep going, attack Kyo?
Finally, because he's not really sure what is the right course of action to take, he opts for answering the question, albeit with distinct defensiveness in his tone.
"I'm burning these bodies. What are you doing following me?"

"What happened to them! What the hell are you doing, sneaking away like —" Did he kill them? The thought is like a punch to the gut, and Kyo breaks off midsentence.

If he knew what Kyo was thinking, he would realize that was the wrong thing to say. As it is, he only means that COMPASS got them. As always.
"I wasn't sneaking, I just thought a more private setting would be... better." Perhaps there are some people who knew them who could have been invited, but Equius is less worried about those individuals getting to pay their last respects and more worried about his own ability to not break down like a wiggler in front of someone else.
