I was still feeling kind sick today, but I decided I was well enough to go to yoga. This whole "sick" thing has been pretty amorphous, anyway--I haven't felt like eating, I've been nauseated and really exhausted. In yoga today I could feel that I was still too tired, but it was fun anyway.

My teacher was one of Iyengar's first disciples, and she has another teacher, a woman my age, who is her disciple. They deviate from Iyengar's rigidities in some ways--though in good ways, not bad ones; Iyengar teachers are noted for their ability to keep you safe in yoga class, and that's definitely true of my teacher.

One thing I really like in yoga is the silly use of language. [livejournal.com profile] sscrewdriver (my fellow casual yogini) knows how much I like neologisms, slang and little phrases.

My teacher compares our toes to petals of a rose, the metatarsals of our feet to the fan of a peacock. She talks about the muscles of the chest opening like a Chinese fan (and she'll bring out the fan to show you!) She also mentions Buddhist sculpture from Cambodia. Some of her less successful metaphors have involved comparing the pads of the feet and hands to dragging a computer mouse on a pad. Eh?

The younger teacher, whom I had today for a make-up class, memorably compared the soft placement of the toes to Marshmallow Peeps. Today she explained how to pull up our knees by comparing the body to a model airplane of the type driven by a rubber band. (Do you remember those?) Also she compared our Warrior 2 pose to a kite--in terms of the cross placement of the limbs, but it was a good one.

I also like it when my teacher speaks French. I know it's affected but I just find it adorable when she says "Voila, cherie!" Also I love the younger teacher for her tendency to footnote everything she's learned from any of her previous teachers, "this is what Zoe calls --" etc.

I will never post photos of myself doing yoga, as [livejournal.com profile] painless_j did recently. For one thing, my body is no advertisement for yoga--and it probably never will be. I know I'm not really suited to yoga. My brain flits from thing to thing, I'm too goal oriented, I'm not very flexible, I have injuries that probably won't ever completely heal to give me full mobility, I have crap posture even in Tadasana.

But it is fun.

ETA: Okay, now I'm feeling guilty because I seem to be suggesting that you have to have a perfect body to do yoga. [livejournal.com profile] sscrewdriver does it, and she uses a wheelchair to get around. I'm not the least able (or even the fattest!) person in my class. (though I think I have the least consistent, lamest yoga practice!)

So I'll consider letting my husband take a photo of me upside down sometime. I might have some issues about my body to overcome before I can do that! Maybe I'll set a goal about that. Heh! So non-yogish of me.

You are posting a headstand picture, right? Tell me you are. :) I have to see a real person whose over the age of 13 that can actually do one.

Peeps + yoga = fun!

Hee, I can do only half of it. I can't straighten my legs yet -- always roll over when I try! And it took me eight months of manic exercise to be able to do even that.

Aha! Thanks! I did yoga pretty intensively for at least a year (I'm trying to get back into the habit), and even then I doubt I could have managed even a bent leg headstand!

All right. I am now thinking about what conditions would have to obtain before I would post a pic. Let me think about it. Obviously, if I can do a headstand with my body (with all the boobage, for example) that would be heartening for other people!

You certainly don't have to do anything you don't feel comfortable with, but it would be exciting to see! *G*

Yay! You do yoga! At last I can see somebody on my flist who does it :))

You should join [livejournal.com profile] parlophone and me in our YIM yoga discussions cum woe-sharing :)

You do yourself disservice saying that your "body is no advertisement for yoga--and it probably never will be." Yoga isn't competitive -- probably that's why I like it so much. It's about control and knowledge of your body, your limits, among more "spiritual" things. Every body is individual, and as long as you can feel those millimetres of "progress" (or say change, developments), as long as it makes you feel better, you are doing great.

*off to class, btw :)*

♥ your comment -- so encouraging. I practice Yoga (casually), too, and everything you said, so right on. I love what Yoga does for the mind and spirit as well as for the body.

I don't have a yoga body or a yoga mind. That is, I can never really demonstrate the poses for anyone, and even inside I'm probably not thinking the right thoughts! I have made physical progress, and it's pretty obvious too, but I'm never going to be an example.

But i do love to do headstands. i generally kick straight up against the wall, but I don't have to actually rest my legs on the wall or even kick the wall, most days--it's just there so I know that it is, if that makes sense. If I don't have to do it the proper way (bringing the knees up!) I should eventually be able to do it in the middle of the floor. I have, actually, once or twice.

I have the same thing with props and camel pose--i have to have a prop on my feet to get into the pose, even on days when i'm miraculously flexible enough not to really need the prop--because it's mind thing.

I use props too. In the Reversed Triangle, for instance -- and still fall over more often than not :)

As for thinking right thoughts, I dunno. You don't want to live Yogi life, do you? If not, then it seems to me that just thinking something nice about people around once in a while when in class is already good :)

Re headstands: our teachers don't allow us to kick up. We do it by gradually "walking" with legs closer and closer to body and then slowly raising the legs. And we aren't allowed to do it near a wall 'cos we are encouraged to seek our balance without props, however long it takes. But I do know what you mean saying "it's just there so I know that it is"!

Yes, I think this might be one of the ways that my teacher follows Donna Holleman. Though I don't know for sure. My teacher trained with Iyengar very early, and i think he might have changed some of his methods. Apparently early on he wrote an article called 'The Wall is My Guru"--but that might have actually been about other poses than headstand.

I took a class with a more orthodox Iyengar person, but i didn't like the class.

I do think nice thoughts about people, and sometimes I just space out and just play follow the leader. I think really serious yoga people might be more focused than I am. I'm at the point that I've finally stopped worrying about whether I'm focused enough when I'm in class--that's very big progress!

I'd love to see a picture of you doing yoga. [livejournal.com profile] nevers posts pictures of herself doing gymnastics occasionally and they make me very jealous. I used to take ballet lessons (for nine years in fact) and I really miss the flexibility. Not enough to do anything about it mind, but still!

Hey, at least you can actually do a headstand. That's way beyond my abilities. Hell, I even have trouble opening heavy doors, my arms are so wimpy.

I'm very strong! Though i can't open spaghetti sauce. I think I was strong first and that's how I can get up into headstand.

Hello there. Just making a casual foray into the world of my f-list. Ooh, the chest opening up like a chinese fan. That's great. I'll think about it the next time I'm at yoga or pilates. I got some new yoga gear this week - finally! My old trackie bottoms were over 10 years old and very, very baggy and embarassing. I can't wait to do yoga now!

I loved your atom joke and I can't wait to have an opportunity to pass it on. ;)

I've sent you some stuff by post, although none of it will probably arrive because both of us are CURSED BY THE POSTAL SERVICE recently. Tell me if any of it does, and I'll do a happy little dance.

It was [livejournal.com profile] stasia's joke. I must give her the credit even though i have reaped the glory.

I just reread what I said about you and yoga, and I made it sound like you don't have a perfect body! I know that you have at least a perfectly SEXY body.

I think I just did - a cross between a skinnymalink (have you heard of that? a thin person) and a silly.

My brain works funny. Also, I am online instead of writing. All my stories are going to pot at the moment. It's probably a valuable learning experience or summat.
