I love everything that [livejournal.com profile] rinsbane writes. I cannot decide whether this story is 100% successful, but it's such an exciting experiment that I think you will want to read it anyway. In a wartime fic from Draco's perspective, we see a dark interpretation of Lupin/Snape, Lupin/Tonks, and Harry's relationship with Lupin. This is an amazing Draco--and even offstage, this is a very compelling and mysterious Snape. The thing that makes this a brilliant Draco is that he seems canonical to me. (I'm writing Draco in a couple of stories right now and I just have no idea how to make him seem like the canon Draco Malfoy--dragon or chimera?)

What makes this experimental is that she wrote it entirely in the future tense, and left the ending open, so we don't actually know which of several possibilities comes to pass. That's the part that I don't know whether I like. As usual, though, this is such compelling, tight writing with so many beautiful images that I don't care.

The rating is a hard R, for not very explicit sex--the images of violence are somewhat disturbing, though, and the mood is dark.

The Gnostic Crane

I don't know how I pick things to rec when there is so much good stuff on my flist all the time. The art in the last few days has been amazing.

Entirely in future tense?? Okay, I am definitely going to have to check that out! I love creative and experimental writing styles. :)

Thanks for the rec. I love [livejournal.com profile] rinsbane as well, although I don't leave her nearly enough comments. I am bad! Future tense? I am intrigued. Her writing is really exploratory and exciting. I can't believe she doesn't also do original fiction, only fanfic. She seems made for it.

I haven't read the latest because, actually, I am currently drunk and not fit to make an intelligent response, but she is a GODDESS. A fucking goddess with words. I heart her muchly and envy her ability with words. She truly makes me humble in the best possible way. She is a phenomenal writer. Word.

Ick. I am not in favor of future tense (nor of second-person), and as a reader I am not crazy about weirdly experimental writing. It's one of my odd, conservative streaks.

The story could have been written in past or present, and then only the last bit in future. I think that would have been much more effective. As it is, the future tense drove me batshit insane, to the point where it prevents any positive response to the story.

Sorry it didn't float your boat. I did warn for the future tense! Having started a major project in present tense, I don't think I would have tried future. Present is too much of a pain as it is! Still, I think there are some folks on my flist who will get into this, if only because it's non-romantic H/D. It's quite a lot darker than i write--well, everyone!--but I think there is some reader demand for that.

Oh, I read it fully warned. And, to be honest, predisposed not to like it. :P I probably would have liked the story a lot if it weren't in future tense.

Speaking of art *cough* did you see the bit I rec'd? If you liked it (could you not?), [livejournal.com profile] undunoops has posted a slightly more polished version here. It is soooo awesome!

Future tense? I'll give it a try....

I did see it! I had to wait until I got home from work, so I commented on the more polished version. (Not as fulsomely as I might have, considering how much I liked it.) It was wonderful! I also saw the incredible drawing that Hill did on [livejournal.com profile] daily_deviant with Lupin fainting from blood loss when he gets a giant erection, and the amazing [livejournal.com profile] karasu_hime Hooch pin-up.

Oh, my. The, er, weapon of Lupin's is quite something.

Thanks, sweets! It was a fun experiment. I love knowing your reaction. Future tense is sexy, yar. I have no idea how to write canon Draco either - I just winged it.

I thought the repeating images with the eyeliner and his thoughts about nudity were inspired.
