Did I spell that correctly? I missed the boat with [livejournal.com profile] mechiaeh's Perhapxicon and suddenly I find myself with a bunch of definitions for it when the party is over. (Several discovered in chats with [livejournal.com profile] stasia, [livejournal.com profile] cruisedirector and [livejournal.com profile] rexluscus.) So, here they are:

Parceltongue: The language Harry starts hissing when he looks at Snape's nice package for too long.

kinkering: Editing one's own fic by making many miniscule changes to the sex scenes.

uniporn: As [livejournal.com profile] painless_j put it here, some fics are "interesting and well-done but not my thing." The best example of this is when a writer with really great chops decides to write something very "unicorns and rainbows." Related to this:

disapporntment: (Again, read [livejournal.com profile] painless_j's rant on this subject) a slasher with a great and original idea for a fic just doesn't have the chops to pull it off.

and finally,

shouldduch: When a slash-reading Yenta wants to make a match between the writer of uniporn with great writing skills (and no taste!) and the idea person who just doesn't know how to write it (yet.)

(from the Yiddish word shidduch, a match.)

[livejournal.com profile] geoviki had a post a while ago with several hilarious "terms." Ack, I can't find it.

I believe it highlighted some of her contributions to this post (P III).

And S., I fancy it's still a party -- it's just now in that lull where people are having quiet chats in corners with occasional bursts of laughter instead of all congregating in full chortle around the canapes. ;-)

*glides away to giggle over "Parceltongue"*

Oh, hilarious, because they're true! I am always 'kinkering' with my sex scenes, trying to steam them up a bit!

Very funny stuff! :D

These are fantastic!

Only now I'm all worried I'm a disaporntment. Argh.

And I'm fairly sure it's right.

l'esprit d'escalier

Um, the feeling of the staircase? Now, I'm sure I haven't translated that correctly. Schoolgirl French, d'you know.

My friend's favorite expression--she always used it about arguments she would make to herself after she left a gathering. It was supposed to be what you thought to yourself as you descended the stairs after visiting someone.

I am soooo witty at about 2 am when I can't get to sleep and I lie there thinking of all the wonderful things I could say on LJ. Why do they always seem so unutterably dull when I type them at 2 pm the next day?

Must be l'espirit d'escalier.

That rant is me -- I almost always wish that someone else were writing my great ideas (even when they're not that great). Would that [livejournal.com profile] amanuensis1 had a request jar we could drop our ideas into and she would write them.

And I had two friends in high school who would have made a great shouldduch -- one who wrote elegantly the most boring, trite, cliched fics you could imagine, and the other whose fascinating sci-fi/fantasy worlds were described in, well, teenaged boy terms. (He couldn't help it, I suppose; he *was* a teenaged boy.) If they could have just gotten together as authors.....
