Gay Rights meme--now with new wording.
Oct. 3rd, 2006 12:09 amYeah, baby! I believe in full and equal human rights for gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people. Just in case you were wondering or something!
gacked from everywhere (and edited by me to be less annoying:)
Some nice people wanted to see an explosion of love for gay rights on LJ. Perhaps they were freaked out by something in our current, icky, anti-gay political climate. I decided to participate. Would you like to be part of the love explosion too? Paste this in your journal. I will assume you support human rights for everyone whether you do or not. But if you spam me with anti-gay rhetoric, I will defriend you pronto.
How's that?

Date: 2006-10-03 10:24 am (UTC)1. in the US, it seems, people assume that you don't support rights for GLBT people unless you say so. So, if people come around and ask, I say so. In every state in the union there are mean-spirited campaigns to prevent same-sex marriage. All these big jerks have gotten into public office with anti-gay "pro-family" rhetoric. That's the climate here.
2. Why not just say "human rights"? See #1.
Basically, if you don't say "I think group X is human" folks will automatically assume that you are in favor of human rights EXCEPT for human rights for group X. That applies double, triple, quadruple if you are talking about the US and gay rights. Hey, there are even civil rights activists from other civil rights movements who oppose gay rights in the US! Yeah, no joke.
3. Even if it turns out to be another really dumb meme, I know I won't be sorry that I said something like this in my journal. Unlocked. I might be sorry that I said I was glad a random quiz matched me up with Snape, or told which fictional characters I'd like to "do" and why. But this? Naaah. I would say this to anyone. Okay, maybe not the "we" paragraph. But specific and enthusiastic avowal of my support of the human rights of GLBT people? In my political context, it has to be done.

Date: 2006-10-03 10:38 am (UTC)1. That's a very good reason to be loud about supporting equal rights for GLBTQ's people, in the US and in other places where the backlack might not be as strong but where there's still inquality.
I honnestly don't doubt one second that you, especially you knowing you, do your uptmost on this topic already. I still doubt that posting it on your LJ however, and in that form, is going to change anything. Maybe I'm wrong.
2. Point taken, you're absolutly right.
3. I'm sorry, I really didn't want to make you feel sorry about it. I was annoyed because the formulation of this meme is : "if you don't do this, then you're an homophobe", which is forcing the hand of everyone who sees it to post it... which irks me. I don't think i /should/ feel forced to post anything on any topic, even a very good cause I adhere to, on my live journal.
That was my point, not that you were wrong for posting "I support GLBTQ's rights!"

Date: 2006-10-03 11:08 am (UTC)i like your way of expressing this "in the US and in other places where the backlash might not be as strong but there's still inequality." That's really good!
This meme might turn out to be another one of those really stupid internet things, like "do xyz for a political protest" spam or whatever. Whatever. That's all right. It is a kind of a dopey formulation, yeah. I also doubt posting on LJ will have major consequences.
There might be some people who are working on these issues who will feel less isolated though. That might be a possible good outcome.

Date: 2006-10-03 02:59 pm (UTC)I was thinking about France while saying that ^^ still no mariage for homosexuals, instead a semi-civil contract available to everyone (not a bad thing in itself), but which isn't similar enough to mariage to be a good alternative for homosexuals.
Yeah, the argument against isolation is a good one. I get so used of people's tolerance in slash fandom in general (and fandom in general too) that i forget it's not easy to talk like that in other places. I think that's where the progress needs to be too.

Date: 2006-10-03 02:07 pm (UTC)Any time someone tells me to post/pass on something, my knee-jerk reaction is to... not. I especially hate the implication that if I don't do such and such, than I must be against such and such. That's blackmail and I don't do blackmail. Grrrrr. But I agree with both you and

I tend to assume this - and then sometimes get horribly disappointed when reading journals at throwaway remarks. So yay for your nice post.
I believe in full rights for penguins too. Very important with the current state of the ice caps. Sometimes they have to travel for days for a decent pint.
