What I'm Reading Next

To make [personal profile] lysimache happy, I have very slowly started reading Les Misérables in the original French, after learning that the Kindle can now load translating dictionaries. (My old Kindle could not, but it's like 15 years old.) I don't think I'm going to finish it ever but, hey, I'm trying.

Does anyone know if anyone's created a third-party tool to download a work from AO3 with comments included? I'd love to be able to, like, d/l my own works but with the comments in a readable format,

I saw this on Reddit, but I don't know how to run it (I am not tech-savvy at all, like if you tell me what to paste into the command line I can do it but you need to hold my hand).

I tried to see if this tool could do it, but I can't get it to open (even after telling my Mac's security to let me go ahead and open it, it just bounces in the dock and disappears).

Calibre's batch-download stuff downloads files the way AO3 permits: just the work, no comments.

H2O: Just Add Water

scaramouche: Nikita Ager as a mermaid in water (mermaid)

It does feel weird to look back and see that H2O: Just Add Water was influential to modern mermaid media. Not as much as Splash, of course, but a decent amount. Do not cite the deep magic to me etc., I was there when the show premiered and a gajillion (I exaggerate) people told me about it and although I did check it out then, I only followed along into a third of the first season. TV shows were very different in 2008, and by then I'd lost interest (or outgrown) these kinds of stories.

Now, however, it is a delight! I paced myself through watching the whole first season, and despite only being ~25 mins per episode, 26 episodes a season is an embarrassment of riches. So much content! So many little stories where the girls are Put In Different Situations, and thanks to the past near-two-decades of media trends, I do love it when characters are Put In Different Situations instead of it being One Long Situation Where the Major Catharsis Only Happens At the End of the Season! The theme song is also so great, I've been letting it play out every time and eventually started singing along, both for the opening and longer ending.

The first few episodes have the girls getting used to their powers (I love that Cleo is the one who decides to not let it limit her options), but then it settles into a status quo and although the quality is uneven, a lot of the episodes are SO much fun, and I haven't laughed that hard for a while as I did for the Siren Effect episode, when Cleo gains siren powers and enchants all the boys in the neighbourhood into being idiots. Then there's The Big Chill where Emma straight up almost accidentally MURDERS the popular girl with her freeze powers, and that's not an euphemism, but the show took care to talk around the stakes instead of using words like "corpse", "kill" or "dead", which was so, SO funny. A+, 'tis delightful, only capable when everyone's committed to the light-hearted tone and are decent comic actors. You really appreciate good comic acting after you've watched so much bad comic acting.

So much so that my stomach dropped at the last few episodes of the season when the tension ramped up as the girls' secret is about to be uncovered. I don't need that! I just want bite-sized fun romps! And unfortunately I accidentally read an overview of season 2 and I have never enjoyed the trope where a TV show introduces an interloper who has the abilities/skills of the main characters but are "better" at it, but hopefully the execution is better than it sounds. A team of three evil mermaids to rival the main trio WOULD have been fun, though, since that's more equal opportunity competitiveness instead of usurpation.

Random observation: the first season came out in 2008, and Lewis uses the word "googling". I think that was more a sign of his nerdery than normalized lingo, but interesting in terms of looking at the show as a time capsule.

More, cut for length. )

The energy of season one as a whole is so charming and fluffy, so I might take a break and continue into season 2 later.

I know that everyone who wanted to play Hades has probably already played Hades and moved on to Hades 2, because Hades came out back in 2020, but this is my journal and I just finished the main storyline yesterday, so.

Hades, including some plot spoilers )

Up next in gaming: Not sure. I might play TR-49, which I just bought; I think that's a short one, and it looked like a fun puzzle game. I might also just play more Slay the Spire in preparation for StS2 next month. I know I said I wasn't gonna do Ascensions in StS, but I lied and started doing them. Of course, I'm at, like, 2. Out of 20. I will probably not get to 20.

I am also starting to feel well enough that I might consider playing a game on the Switch, which I haven't done since the migraines got bad, really, because holding a Switch is apparently a lot to ask of me, whereas games on the laptop means that the laptop sits right here next to me, and the 8bitdo controller also sits in my lap, so I don't have to lift anything. Yeah, I know. I've been really tired. At least right now I have enough energy to type this.

So I've been pretty open about these two pseuds being connected for a while now, but because I'm always thirsty for comments I might as well let you guys know that, off and on, I've been writing Orignal Works pornography as [archiveofourown.org profile] kuntar. Most of these involve:

  • an arrogant, wealthy, evil and very slutty fop of a sorcerer who gets Whumped Intensely by Even Worse Dudes who make Archive Warnings Apply to him, heavily
  • a kind, brawny paladin who begrudgingly saves his life a lot even though they're enemies and the sorcerer kind of ruined his life
  • they smooch a lot

The most recent story (which I just finished finally editing, woooo!):

  • Sweet Honey, Loathsome | 20k, Complete | M/M, Explicit | Vaunted, a kind paladin, opens his door to find that his longtime enemy, the evil wizard Wrathbyrne, has been stripped of his powers and placed under a curse: Wrathbyrne has to get fucked once a day or he dies.

Previous stories, all of which are standalones that each exist in their own little universes, slightly "canon"-divergent from one another:

  • Lord Wrathbyrne's Highly Unpleasant Year | 72k, WIP | M/M, Explicit | An evil wizard gets non-conned by a bunch of other evil dudes and then rescued by Fake He-Man.
  • Roadside Attractions | 5k, Complete | M/M, Explicit | A cartoonishly evil wizard and his heroic, good guy foe are handcuffed together in a sitcom predicament. Then they get dosed with sex pollen.
  • Reformation | 13k, WIP | M/M, Explicit | The Good Council of Good has a soft-spoken death cleric attempt to rehabilitate the evil wizard and turn him into a good man. Obviously, this is just an excuse for whump and Archive Warnings To Apply to the evil wizard, who hopes local hero, Vaunted the nice paladin, will save him. Even though the nice paladin is the one who arrested him in the first place. Oops.

Anyway, if any of this sounds up your alley, I hope you check 'em out, I love my little guys. <3

Airplane seat cushion help

I'm searching for airplane seat cushions.

I was hoping someone on my friend's list has tried a few cushions or has a favorite they'd recommend for long haul air travel? Like 12 hours and more air travel?

Living in Alaska long flights are the norm but I think I have to accept I'm growing older and traveling is painful.

I'd appreciate any and all advice! Sadly getting out of the plane and swimming the rest of the way won't work....

Shout out to the jackass rider in Thoth who threw my sister a roofied shot of fireball. (It was factory sealed. We don't know how it was spiked.) ((Smallest sister usually wouldn't accept random booze from a stranger, but had just received news that her PHD project had passed a committee and was going to the ethics review board. In the moment YOLO feelings were strong.))

Smallest sister is okay. She threw up and had a not great evening, but didn't even feel particularly hungover this morning.

If you ever suspect you've been drugged via a drink, throw up as soon as you can. Getting the drugs out of your stomach before they're fully absorbed will make things less bad.

Smallest sister will be contacting the Krewe and reporting the jackass when she's less mad.

Driving a car is boring. Which is not necessarily a bad thing! Every time I start a trip, I drive my car in reverse uphill on my gravel driveway like its nothing. Which is amazing! I couldn't have done that on a motorcycle, for multiple reasons, but in my car its trivial.

But with all driving being easy mode, the long straight highways that were already boring on a motorcycle are now that much worse. For some trips I take an early exit off the highway to take back roads to keep myself awake. But I'm trying to get better at highway driving, so I've got a music playlist I'm building, of songs that are both very familiar and high energy to keep me going.

Also I started working on a vid. Not any of the vids I haven't touched in over a year, not even the same editing program, but meh. Its one of those ideas that's not good by any objective metric, just two things you like shoved together.

Husband went to bed feeling crappy and woke up certain he has the flu.

So I'm in the process of changing all the plans this week. Making meetings virtual, finding the masks I stashed in the house in case anyone absolutely must interact with someone this week, changing my daughter's lesson schedule, you name it. No one else has any symptoms but I feel like I need to get critical things done now in case I'm knocked down at some point. I would rather not be worried about my boss' social media if I'm running a fever and needing sleep, you know?

Air filter running, humidifiers newly cleaned, Emergen-C purchased, and my pressure campaign to get my husband to do a virtual doctor's appointment is underway.

I really fucking hate how efficient we all are now about illness, if I'm honest.

-

In totally unrelated news, the padawan got to watch Titanic last night and these were her initial take-aways:

1 - Actually a horror movie
2 - “Mom, WHY did you see this so many times* in the theater?!”
3 - Ismay was the villain
4 - She will never listen to Celine Dion again

* It was 9 times. Once on a date, next time with my best friend, and the rest with male friends who wanted to see it but didn't want to admit to their friends that they did.

She did tell me this morning that while the awful parts of the sinking kept her awake for awhile last night, this morning she's only thinking about the romance, so it didn't totally scar her for life, lol.

Twenty-plus years of loving each other, cooking together, and building upon our mutual disdain of dealing with crowds and reservations for Valentine's Day means [personal profile] hyounpark and I made a dinner worth remembering tonight.

By default, when we have pork belly around in the winter, we usually braise it in apple cider, along with a chopped onion, garlic, a little soy sauce, fish sauce, and fivespice. But we didn't have apple cider in the fridge, so I thought about what else we could use for a braising liquid, and while pondering, found a recipe on the McCormick website for a Thai Tea-Spiced Pork Belly with Condensed Milk Sauce, and my eyes lit up, because I knew we had Thai tea packets on hand.

We riffed heavily off that recipe, mostly treating it as taste profile suggestions. I started steeping a liter of Thai tea while H chopped an onion, then I sauteed the onions with garlic and ginger paste (an incredible convenience courtesy the Indian grocery store in our neighborhood), and then added some fivespice powder. H crosshatched the pork belly skin, then cut it into small enough slabs to fit in our Instant Pot. I added a few tablespoons of soy sauce and fish sauce to the stuff in the skillet, then dumped that in the bottom of the Instant Pot; laid the pork belly slabs on top of the rack in the IP, and poured the tea over everything, and then closed it up and let it go on high for 20 minutes.

While that went, H tried to turn our rice into the suggested rice cakes, but we should've used sushi rice instead of brown rice which was what we had ready. Even using the musubi mold didn't get it to stick together enough, alas. Everything still tasted delicious in the end, though, so no fuss.

Meanwhile, I made the condensed milk sauce in the recipe - we had condensed coconut milk on hand, I subbed in peanut butter for the tahini and chile crisp for the sambal - and then turned my attention to the salad. What did we have in the fridge? Half a head of butter lettuce, some shiso leaves, scallions; enough for at least a little greenery on the plate. Chopped the leafy greens and scallion up, and then, inspired, ran an apple through the mandolin. Whisked together a dressing of peanut oil, lime juice, fish sauce, a little galangal and garlic. Topped it off with peanuts.

The IP finished releasing pressure just as we finished the rest of the plating; we each pulled out a small slab of pork belly, drizzled the condensed milk sauce over it, and utterly freaking devoured our dinner. Everything just came together, building on decades of experience and familiarity with each others' taste, and we will absolutely do this again.

And it's not Valentine's for us without chocolate, so I pulled a log of our favorite chocolate toffee cookies out of the freezer, sliced and baked and ate. (Along with the last crumbs of the gargantuan king cake slice [personal profile] ladyjax bestowed upon me yesterday! Many thanks to her A for the baking thereof :) )

Somehow we will both get up in the morning and go for a digestive run and continue appreciating how we grow together, even as things around us are so very different from how we imagined when we began.

Aryana (50.2% completed)

Feb. 14th, 2026 11:41 am
scaramouche: Jenna Ushkowitz as Tina in Glee (tina rocks out)
[personal profile] scaramouche
I'm 95 episodes into 189, which means that I'm at the halfway mark! Kambal Sirena and Mutya both finished their entire runs with less than 95 epiosdes, but Aryana is still going. I can see why, because even with the parts that are repetitive and slow, there's more story to go, and the characters are nowhere near the catharsis you'd expect for certain kinds of family and relationship tropes.

I haven't mentioned it before, but while Aryana is still within that particular teleserye weight class, I do like that they make the effort to foreshadow, by introducing characters or plot points multiple episodes before they become relevant, instead of throwing a new soap opera plot turn the main characters' way out of nowhere. Well, the show still does that, but there's also clearly some planning and forward-thinking involved. Eg. We are given teasing glimpses of Adrian and Stella's ex a few episodes before we're told who they are and they enter the main stories.

There's also thoughtfulness in a particular editing trick the show loves, by intercutting between two emotionally or thematically mirroring scenes in order to make a point, eg. they will intercut between a scene of Aryana arguing with with her mother about their family, with a scene of Megan arguing with her father about their family. There's deliberation in the pacing and storylines that they've put together, and that's neat.

Speaking of Stella's ex, I was wrong when I assumed that Stella was cheating on Victor! (Because of the show's teasing of a mysterious man who's been calling Stella.) Instead this guy is Stella's ex who is blackmailing her, and is possibly Megan's biological father. I kinda like this storyline even if it does feel inorganic compared to other storylines, in that it feels like the show had to add ONE telenovela conflict into Megan's family that had nothing to do with Aryana, and perhaps as part of an argument that Stella is a bad partner to Victor.

The tropes say that Ofelia has to be reunited with Victor, but the show hasn't done the work for it yet, and I was actually enjoying that while Aryana and Ofelia were saw-trapped by Aryana's situation on Love Triangle Island, which was happening at the same time when Ofelia had an ulcer that needed immediate surgery, which made Everyone in that storyline go bonkers.... far far away Megan, Stella and Victor were having the most loving family time they've EVER had since the show started. Victor made it up for his Aryana-insane behaviour to Megan in a realistic way, and everyone was legit happy! They're a happy family! Which is fun and makes it genuinely upsetting to think about how this happiness is going to be ruined when Aryana comes back into the picture. (Which is also why I think they added the Stella's ex storyline, so it's not all Aryana's fault.) I think it would be fun if the two families become friends and Ofelia gets a new love interest, but my guess is they're not gonna do that.

Also Aryana's third love interest has shown up, following the Love Triangle Island blowup that had Aryana shutting down both Marlon and Hubert (though it was more Marlon's fault than Hubert's, ugh). Considering the youtube comments mentioning him before, I wasn't expecting the show to take almost half its runtime to bring the new guy in. Adrian is a surly little sadboy, who's traumatized over his mother's drowning death, and so far I don't care for him because a surly boy who is surly to everyone just isn't fun. May that change soon. I think Marlon's reaction to Adrian will be hilarious.

Dear Spacer Letter- 2026

Howdy Spacer! So excited to be a part of the [community profile] space_swap  exchange this year and thrilled that we matched on one of these fandoms.

I put some general ideas in my sign-up already and I'll put them below as well, but my general likes/dislikes/DNWs are:

Likes: character pieces, thoughtful world-building, plot that explores alternate beginnings and endings. Angst with happy or at least resolved endings. Closed door sex but public flirting and maybe even some cheeky foreplay. Dialogue. Apocalypse is always fun. Platonic relationships that have weight. In Star Wars, political intrigue, bureaucracy as both the intrinsic evil and ultimate downfall of the Empire (and yet a tool used by the Rebellion and New Republic!), canon pairings, non-canon or offscreen meet-cutes, and you can be as heavy or as light with Force mythology as you like. In Marvel, effects of the "blip"/snap are hugely important to me, especially how the trauma of time lost or time without loved ones is still something everyone is dealing with.

Dislikes/DNWs: alternate settings unless requested (I don't really like modern AUs, for example), explicit sex of any kind, real-world politics unless it's a real-world property to begin with. Non-requested character deaths. Canon-typical violence is fine, gore or unnecessary/gratuitous violence is not. In Star Wars, I would prefer not to take the characters out of the Star Wars Universe. Would prefer characters not use the Force for coercive sex. In Marvel, strongly prefer canon relationships unless otherwise stated.

Specific thoughts on requests by fandom )
