Canon point: Manga chapter 281. End of the Byakuran future arc. Tsuna had just defeated him and they are getting ready to return to the past. Mukuro is his ten year older version at this point.

Personality:
Mukuro almost always sports a rather playful smile, but it isn't one of happiness or of friendliness. Rather it is particularly heartless and he enjoys watching others suffer, usually from events that he has put into motion. Mukuro has set some pretty lofty life goals and he is not opposed to taking out anyone that gets in his way. He is fearless and not easily intimidated by anyone he encounters, no matter how strong they may appear. His arrogance and self-confidence make him even more dangerous then his powers alone. He considers people "toys" and sacrifices them to fit his own needs and wants. He is highly intelligent and one of the top tacticians in the world, which makes him incredibly dangerous.

On many occasions, Mukuro uses his illusions to change his appearance and to keep his true identity hidden in order to get what he wants through undercover methods. He will control different people's bodies to do his bidding, or cover an existing body with a false appearance for the same reasons. You can never be completely sure if the person you are talking to is the actual Mukuro, or just an illusion. This shows his drive to get what he wants, even though he can't always physically be in the places he needs to be.

Mukuro hates the Mafia and that is what motivates him to do the things he does. He was subjected to experiments as a child by the mafia's Estraneo family. At a young age, he killed his captors in revenge for the experiments performed on him and many other children. He spared the lives of a couple of the captured children, Chikusa and Ken, and offered them a chance to join him in his quest to destroy the mafia world.

His plan for revenge upon the Mafia is to destroy it and cleanse the world of its filth by creating universal suffering through a world war. Mukuro will stop at nothing to obtain what he desires. After he left the labs, he was adopted into another mafia family. He eventually took control of one of their members and used that man to kill the rest of the household. This family showed him kindness, something the Estraneo family did not, and yet their fate was still the same. Mukuro does everything according to his own sense of principles. He always seems to be one step ahead of everyone and sometimes it seems that even being caught and taken to prison, is all part of his ongoing plan to destroy the mafia.

Mukuro is a murderer, and will kill whomever he has to, if he believes it is necessary. However, he actually finds people most useful when they are living and makes them into his toys when possible. Rarely does he actually kill unless he is angry enough to do so or it is necessary in order to further his plan. Because of his abilities and the crimes he has committed he has spent much of his life locked away in a high security Italian prison known as the Vendice, reserved for the most dangerous of the mafia's criminals. It is also a place he has managed to escape from on several occasions.

On the eve of his execution he managed to escape along with his two subordinates, Chikusa and Ken, resulting in the deaths of many wardens and prisoners. He came to Japan, enrolled in Kokuyo Junior high and started a gang that included the man that Mukuro used to kill his adoptive family. He continued to use this man's body for the next few years, turning him into the "Fake Mukuro" and making people believe that he was the real one, keeping his own identity under wraps. All of this was part of Mukuro's plan to blend into the world and avoid the Vendice until it was absolutely necessary for him to reveal himself. This shows the level of intelligence Mukuro has, his ability to deceive, and the lengths he will go to to obtain what he wants, as well as how far ahead he plans. He is terribly arrogant and confident working toward his goal, with no regard to the lives destroyed in his quest for it

Despite his less then honorable qualities, Mukuro has moments when it appears he actually does care for people if you do manage to make into his little "circle". He becomes incredibly protective and will sacrifice himself to protect the ones he "cares" about. For instance, Mukuro used himself as bait during a second breakout from prison, allowing Ken and Chikusa to successfully escape. He then negotiated with the Vongola family to become Tsuna's Mist Guardian in order to make sure they remained free from prison. However, even though Mukuro became the Mist Guardian he continued to view the organization with hatred and claimed he was not a part of the mafia but rather working for his own benefit.

Another instance where Mukuro shows hints of compassion was when he stumbled upon a girl named Nagi while he was traveling through dreams. She was dying and he saved her life by giving her illusion based organs. In return Nagi, who changed her name to Chrome, dedicated her life to serving him and carrying out his will. He used Chrome's body whenever it was necessary for him to fulfill his duties as a Mist Guardian while he was still in prison. All of his subordinates are incredibly loyal to him, showing that there is something likeable beneath all that deceitful behavior.

Over the years, Mukuro gains more subordinates, including a boy named Fran. He took Fran on as a student and taught him the ways of illusions. Mukuro saw the potential in Fran, just as he did in Chrome. Eventually he sends Fran off to join the Varia and replace one of its members known as Mammon, who died due to a man named Byakuran's influence on the world. Fran will be the one that manages to put forth Mukuro's plans and gets him out of prison to help aid Tsuna in defeating Byakuran. Mukuro also places more responsibility on Chrome, pushing her to grow and improve her skills. He wants her to be able to do things for herself and help out in her own way. His bonds with his subordinates gets stronger with the passing time and it becomes obvious that he does many of the things he does in order to help them improve.

Even though Mukuro claims to not have any desire to be part of the Vongola family, he appears to be working alongside them more as the years go on. As shown in the ten year later arc, he always shows up whenever Tsuna seems to be in trouble or needs his help. He has claimed many times over the years that he intends to take the tenth Vongola boss' body but he makes no further attempts to do so despite how often they come in contact with one another. This progression shows that he instead wants to see what kind of mafia the new Vongola boss creates. He is curious if Tsuna can bring about the kind of changes that could shape a whole new mafia, or eliminate it completely. By doing so, Mukuro's plans would change and the goals he has set for himself for years would become different.

In order to stay close and observe Tsuna's growth it appears he has become an asset and loyal guardian to the Vongola family as time has passed. He is now called upon to do missions that only he has the ability to succeed at. He even goes undercover in Byakuran's organization to gain inside information on the man. Byakuran's plans for the world may have run parallel to Mukuro's but the guardian dislikes the idea of being controlled and serving beneath him. The task of spying on such a formidable opponent is a dangerous undertaking but Mukuro wants to make sure the Vongola family has all the information possible to eventually defeat him, should Mukuro be unable to do it himself.

Later on, Mukuro appears during Tsuna and Byakuran's final fight. His appearance at that time is integral in the eventual defeat of the Six Funeral wreaths, which were some of the world's strongest fighters that worked beneath Byakuran. It is clear that Mukuro wanted a chance to take down Byakuran himself, but is smart enough to realize quickly that it had to be Tsuna that defeats him.

It appears that despite his claims, he has become someone that the Vongola family finds dependable. He has formed a respect for the type of mafia that the Tenth Vongola boss has managed to create and his need to be close enough to observe this has made him more of a companion to the family then he previously was. Although he still doesn't see things the same way as the Vongola family, he is curious to see just how far they can go. This change over the course of ten years might also be more of that "softer" side of Mukuro that he tries to hide behind a deceitful nature. This is perhaps a side that has grown due to Tsuna's influence on his life.

Powers/Abilities:
Mukuro is a deadly fighter. He has often sent both the Mafia and the police into dangerous situations. His main weapon is a trident, and he uses it for any close combat battles. It is also used to obtain his "toys". By cutting the person with the trident, he is able to make a contract that gives him access to their mind.

Mukuro is a master of illusions and that is the skill he prides himself on the most. His abilities are the "Six Realms of Reincarnation" which are six different skills that were carved into his memories by his body when he underwent all six paths to Hades. He was then reborn while in the Estraneo family's lab as a child. When he uses these skills a Japanese numeral that matches the realm he has entered appears in his red right eye. These paths vary from physical abilities to mind-controlling abilities.

First Realm - When the number one in Japanese, appears in his eye, it indicates his use of the first realm, the "Realm of Hell", which grants him the power to create real illusions, capable of entering the real world. He can also use this ability without having the illusion appear in the real world, but only in the person's mind.
Second Realm - number two is the "Realm of Hungry Ghosts", which grants him the power to use the skills of others; when he controls a person's body, he is able to perfectly perform their signature attacks.
Third Realm - three is the "Realm of Animals", which grants him the power to summon and control deadly animals, such as snakes, bees, etc.
Fourth Realm - four is the "Realm of Asura", which increases his battle skills; when using this skill, a mist flame surrounds his right eye. He becomes faster, stronger and a far more difficult opponent to handle in hand to hand combat situations.
Fifth Realm - five is the "Realm of Humans", which increases his battle aura, thus his strength; it is considered to be the most dangerous of the Six Realms; when Mukuro first enters the realm, he physically pierces his right eye, and a type of aura surrounds Mukuro's entire body and represents his fighting spirit.
Sixth Realm - six is the "Realm of Heaven", which grants him the power to control others. He uses the Estraneo Family's Possession Bullet with this realm. This is a forbidden bullet which will enable one person to possess the body of another when they are shot with it. Mukuro is easily able to posses and control the body of anyone that he has cut with his trident with this method. He can also possess several bodies simultaneously and still be able to enter the Six Realms allowing him to use a different skill with each body he possesses.

Also in Mukuro's possession are two Hell Rings and a Box Weapon. The box weapon is an owl that is named Mukurowl and can change into a weapon known as "Daemon Spade's Devil Lens".The owl transforms into a set of three Lenses which allow the user to see through Illusions and reveal the nature of attacks. Basically it allows Mukuro the ability to see the weaknesses and the status of an enemy. It is also believe that whomever was glared at through the lens, became cursed.

The Hell Rings are used in conjunction with the Box weapons. One is a Vine Covered Orb Shaped Ring while the other one is the Evil Eye Hell Ring. The Evil Eye Hell Ring (or Malocchio) and the iron claw that grows from it can consume an elephant-sized body in just a minute. It is said that whoever this Ring looks at will become paralyzed and lose the ability to think. He can use the eye shaped ring to generate a blast of Mist Flames in the form of eyes and tentacles. Nothing is really known about the other Hell Ring that he possesses.

Prose sample:
Mukuro stares at the city before him, an amused smirk on his face as he takes in all the sights and sounds. How he managed to end up in this place is beyond him. It is odd for the master illusionist to be caught off-guard or surprised, but someone has managed to get the upper hand and this pleases him in an odd sort of way. He loves a challenge and if this is one incredibly detailed illusion, then he wants to meet the person capable of such a thing. And then teach him his place.

"Kufufufu...You have skill, but do you really think you can contain me?" Mukuro could tell this was more then just a normal real illusion but he needs to be able to understand it so he unleashes his box weapon. Mukurowl transforms into the Devil Lens and attaches to Mukuro's red colored eye. What he finds is rather shocking and his face grew serious for a moment as he studies the world around him. Clearly this isn't an illusion. He releases the box weapon and the lens disappears. He considers the information he has just gained and his options for a moment, playing out all possible scenarios that would have landed him in this place. Mukuro is a master tactician and can almost always see several steps ahead of people. But truthfully, he saw no concrete answers in regards to how he came to this place and this surprises him.

Very few things manage to surprise Mukuro. A slow smirk spreads across his features as he realizes that he has found himself in a particularly interesting place. "How amusing. I might be able to have some fun here." And by fun, Mukuro means he is going to do whatever it takes to find the person who brought him here, and find out how they did it. He fully intends to use that kind of power to his advantage if he can manage to gain it for himself. Being able to take someone from their home, against their will...well that is right up Mukuro's alley.

With that he tosses that long blue-black hair of his over his shoulder and starts towards the city. He plans on getting some answers, and having some fun in the process.
