Temporarily breaking hiatus for just a partial update of 연민의 굴레 (chapters 31-36)...

I'll definitely add the translations of 37-40 at some point to this post, but I've finally gotten volumes 8-11 of Nabi, so will be concentrating on those much more.

Chapter 31: Got No Romanticism

http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=58526&no=31&weekday=mon

TV: Yes... So... what's the one thing that we human beings must have in our life?

It just might be independence. [note: can also be translated as "identity"]

People have the ability to think and make decisions for themselves.

A life someone else lives for you is unacceptable.

*text: Don't give up, and find your own independence! Listen to your inner voice!*

The only one in charge of your life is you.

TV: Ah... though I do wish politicians would listen to the voice of the people rather than their inner voices...

*text: hahaha...*

Ryeon' Mom: Aren't you going to school?

Isn't it the anniversary of the school's opening?

Ryeon: I overslept.

Ryeon's Mom: What! Then why aren't you getting ready?

You made a pledge to me that you'd go to school like a good student!

Ryeon: No I didn't.

Ryeon's Mom: Anyway if you're a student then you have to do your best at being a...!!

*sfx: grumble*

Ryeon: I want breakfast.

Ryeon's Mom: ...

Just eat this and then go to school!

Ryeon: Okay.

Ryeon's Mom: I want more. Fried eggs. Water.

Ryeon: Help yourself!!

Ryeon: Should I get apple, or orange?

I'll try pushing both at once.

Min: Seems like there's a weird club at school.

*sfx: crash*

Ryeon: What?

Min: I didn't know, before..

But it looks like there are quite a few that make people sign up and participate against their will.

*text: and they can't drop out*

Ryeon: Th-th-this is the first time I've heard of it...

Min: I just heard about it from a teacher.

They said I should keep an eye out for those kind of clubs...

I guess they thought since I'm in Student Council, I should do it.

Ryeon: Ah...

Min: Those kinds of clubs are a problem, but kids who get pressured to join are dumb, too.

Well, I'm not one to talk, but...

So, apple, or orange?

Ryeon: (It's true...)

This spring, I joined the Mystery Club with Min's little sister, Mi-na.

*text: Cute Girl An Mi-na, 17 years-old*

We were basically tricked into joining this club...

*flashback* [note: I'm not re-translating the repeat panels]

Our activities are usually

Playing games

Eating...

Playing some more...

In a meaningless repeating pattern.

No matter how you look at it, it's too suspicious to be a school club.

And the most suspicious of all are the members of this club themselves.

A Strange Human Being: Yang Han-na, 19 years-old

*text: we do whatever we feel like kinda kinda whatevs whatevs just like that see isn't it easy?*

A Strong-looking Human Being: Na La-la, 19 years-old

A Human Being with a Nasty Personality: Kim Do-hui, 18 years-old

A Scary Human Being: Jang Song-lee, 17 years-old

And the rest...

*text: when are we going to appear...*

There's no one who seems normal...

But the biggest problem is

Ryeon: I'm betting my life that it's that one!

Do-hui: They say you shouldn't bet unless you're completely sure. Do I look that nice to you?

La-la: Wait! Do you have to go that far?

Han-na: What is this

Me, who's naturally starting to get along with these kinds of people.

Hui-wan: Oh!

Cha Ryeon!

Are you just now coming to school?

*text: Isn't 3rd period over?*

This kid is Kim Hui-wan, who's in the Student Council with Min.

Hui-wan: Are you ditching?

He's secretly a member of the Mystery Club, even though he's part of the Student Council.

There's no one more suspicious than him.

But unfortunately we've had to become confidantes.

Hui-Wan: You're not in elementary school, why are you coming to school at this hour? Ahahahaha

Ryeon: ...

Don't laugh.

*sfx: punch*

Hui-wan: !!

*sfx: running*

Ryeon: Who said you could act all friendly with me? Idiot!

The two us on the same side? In your dreams!!

*text: you smell like a mop bucket so stay away!*

*text: snicker*

Hui-wan [grinding his teeth]: (That girl...! I'll definitely make you pay!!!!)

My ordinary life is starting to go off the tracks.

*sfx: rub*

Ryeon: ...!

*sfx: tap*

Cat: Meow.

Ryeon: Hey, kitty. You bored? I have to go to class though.

Cat: Mroww.

Ryeon: What? Don't go?

That's tough...

Cat: Meow.

Ryeon: Oh, all right! Then should we ditch today?

You look like Min. Are you a pig, too?

Cat: Meow...

*sfx: vibrating*

Ryeon: Hello??

Ack..! Yes, it's Ryeon! [note: Homeroom Teacher calling]

I...that's...I, I don't feel so well... Cough...! Cough! I must have gotten a cold again.

Cough...! I'm...on my way to the hospital.

I was going to go to school no matter what...! Coughcoughcoughcough!!!!

Homeroom Teacher: Oh no. If you're sick, you can't come to school. Your health is more important, isn't that right?

Ryeon: Oh~ but I was going to try to come to class...Cough!

Homeroom Teacher: Ah, in that case. Why don't you see me in the teachers' office before you leave?

Ryeon: Eh?

Homeroom Teacher: Why don't we hang out and have some fun?

Ryeon: Eck!

*Teachers' Office*

Homeroom Teacher: Seriously... I can't believe you!

You crawl in past noon, and then ditch?

What's going on in that head of yours?! Exams are coming up!

Ryeon: ...

If you saw me... you could have said so... That's pretty low.

Homeroom Teacher: So you are embarrassed, are you? You could use a good smack.

Another Teacher (Ms. Jin): Calm down.

She's here at school, isn't she? Why don't you let her off just once?

Homeroom Teacher: That's because you don't know this kid. She's a multiple offender!

Her best friend is the class rep and a member of the Student Council, a model student as everyone knows... they couldn't be any more different.

*text: Find your independence! The one in charge of your life is you!*

Ryeon: I...

Homeroom Teacher: What!

Ryeon: I think...I should quit school.

Homeroom Teacher: What now?

Ryeon: I don't think it's right for me.

I think it'd be better if I spent my time doing something else.

Homeroom Teacher: You think you're a grown-up?

Ryeon: Grown...up? A grown-up? Maybe?

Homeroom Teacher: Yeah right! If you keep looking for excuses and running away you'll never be a grown-up.

Ryeon: E-even if I run away, as long as I don't mess up, then it's fine!

Homeroom Teacher: Don't make me laugh.

Running away is the same as giving up. Do you think success or failure applies to someone who doesn't even try?

If you give up now, you won't last long no matter what you do.

I don't know what's going on, but even if there's something you want to do, just hang on for a while. You're still a kid.

Ms. Jin: I think it's fine, though.

I thought about dropping out when I was high school, too.

School was boring and didn't really suit me, but above all, I wanted to see a world that was a bit bigger than school. I felt like I'd be able to find myself if I did that.

If I had dropped out, maybe I'd be living a more carefree life today.

Homeroom Teacher: B-but... even so... a teacher can't tell a student to drop out...

Ms. Jin: School's not the only place you learn things. If you have things you want to do, you have to go for it.

Homeroom Teacher: B-but, it's not as if that guarantees you have a future...

Ryeon: (Unfortunately...)

I'm not a romantic.

I'm sorry...

I lied. The truth is

There's nothing I want to do.

*sfx: whoosh*

Chapter 31: Cries

http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=58526&no=32&weekday=mon

Just what am I crying about?

I can't come up with anything.

Homeroom Teacher: ...

The teachers don't know, either.

That's always the problem.

What am I crying about?

: What in the world are you doing?!?!?!?!

Homeroom Teacher: Ms. Choe...!

Ms. Choe (Ryeon's 1st Year Homeroom Teacher): What did you say to make a student cry in the teachers' office?

Homeroom Teacher: It's a misunderstanding!

Ms. Choe: What misunderstanding!!

Ms. Jin: That's why I told you to stop it.

Homeroom Teacher: When!!!

Ms. Choe: Ryeon's a little slow, and doesn't think, and doesn't pick up on what's going on, but!!

As her first-year homeroom teacher, I can assure you that she's not such a bad student that you have to make her cry!

Homeroom Teacher: Yes...

Homeroom Teacher and Ms. Jin: We're sorry.

Ryeon (crying): M-Ms. Choe...!!

Ms. Choe: Be quiet!!!! Stop crying!!!! A girl shouldn't be acting like that!!

Ryeon: !!??

*sfx: halt*

Ms. Jin: Have some tea and calm down before you go.

Ryeon: S-Sorry...

Ms. Jin: You don't need to apologize.
*text: we're the ones who should say sorry*

Ryeon: Still...

(I feel like I've turned into an elementary school student...)

Homeroom Teacher: Anyway, did that really warrant crying? Do you have something you're worrying about or things at home...

Ms. Choe: Mr. Bak, how are you so insensitive??

Mr. Bak (Homeroom Teacher): What?! What did I do?

Ms. Choe: Ryeon is an oversensitive girl! She's been like this since her first year!
*text: what worries!*

Ryeon: ...

Ms. Jin: I think you're insensitive enough for everyone, Ms. Choe.

They decided to overlook the ditching and just have me clean the classroom as punishment.

Ryeon: Then...I'll go back to class.

Ms. Jin: Okay! Come again soon.

Ryeon: That's okay.

Mr. Bak (surrounded by dark clouds): *Yeah you better not...*

Ryeon: Okay, bye...
*text: like I would*

Ms. Jin: Didn't that surprise you?

Mr. Bak: Yeah... tired me out.

She's really hard to figure out. Usually she's not like that at all... suddenly becoming emotional... whew.

Ms. Jin: Maybe she's chafing a bit?

Mr. Bak: To tell you the truth, rebelling or acting out... that's easier to deal with.
*text: from my point of view*

If you don't say anything, how am I supposed to know what's going on?
*text: crying all of a sudden...*

Ms. Jin: Maybe she didn't realize she needed other people's understanding.

But there are kids like Ryeon.

Isn't it amazing? All these kids... where are they all going?

*Basketball Club*

Basketball Club Captain: Sorry to call you all the way out here.

It'd be a pain to have the other guys around so I thought we could just meet between the two of us.

This is all we have, don't know if you like this stuff.
*text: it's the kind I like*

*sfx: tap*

*Healthy Soy Milk • Domestic Product • Grow Tall*

Basketball Club Captain: It's a good tasty drink.
*text: soybeans are an incredible food product*

I grew 0.3 centimeters by drinking it without fail.
*text: I don't drink it before practice because if can give you diarrhea though*

Min: ...I see.

Wow.

That's really cool.

Basketball Club Captain: Yeah... Anyway...

Lately the Basketball Club's been having problems.

The reason I asked to see you today is because...

Well. You're probably already figured it out, yeah? Ha.

Min: ...Why did you want to see me?

*sfx: snort*

Basketball Club Captain: This time every year, we play matches with neighboring schools to build camaraderie.

Last year in our match against Gyeongho Boys' School we lost, sadly.

They say building camaraderie, but really it's to raise your school's status and spirit.

Our school doesn't have a high opinion of Gyeongho, either.

Even if I don't tell you the details... you were a part of the starting lineup for that match, so you know.

Min: The captain last year asked me to participate...

Basketball Club Captain: So now I'm asking you, An Min.

We'd like you to play again in this year's match.

Min: ...

Do-hui: Oh-yeah!!!

Won another bottle of B-500!! *text: finally!*

*sfx: dance*

La-la: Come down from there if you want to celebrate!!!!

Do-hui: All right!
*text: hahaha*

La-la: You hear me?!

*sfx: squeal*

Mi-na: Let me go!!!! Now!!!!

I!! Want to!! Go up! Too!! I wanna go up too!!

Ryeon: It's dangerous! No! You'll fall if you're not careful!

Do-hui: Tut tut... overprotectiveness ruins children!

Mi-na, forget about that blondie and come up here! I'll teach you the ways of the world.

Ryeon: No you don't!!!!

*sfx: grip*

*sfx: step step step step*

*text: The Swordmaster Returned from Hell, Na La-la (19)*

Do-hui: !!!! La-la...!

I was just about to... Aughk!!!! I'm so... Euaack!

Ryeon: La-la is really strong... (I better watch out.)

*sfx: shriek*

Ryeon: Just give up! Listen to those screams.

Mi-na (disappointed): Aw...

Ryeon: Whargh?!?!

Ow! What the heck!! You scared me!!!!

Mi-na: Hey, Song-lee.

Ryeon: Make some sound when you appear, please!!

Song-lee: Bohemian's descendants have come out.

*text: What?!?!?!*

*label: Cha Ryeon's Bohemian*

*sfx: sparkle*

Mi-na: Ohmigosh!! Tiny tomatoes! They're so cute!
*text: baby tomatoes?*

Ryeon! You've been looking after it all along! I was wrong about you.

Ryeon: ...urm...

Uh...I haven't looked after it at all... how did it grow so much?

(It grows on its own?)

Chapter 33: Basketball Boy

http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=58526&no=33&weekday=mon

*caption: Basketball Boy An Min (11 Years Old)*

*sfx: swoosh*

Min : 3 points!!!

Shot~!!!

Ryeon: What 3-pointer!!! you jerk

*sfx: roll*

Min (hurrying to Ryeon): I told you not to stand next to the basket!!

Mina: Waaaaaaahhhhhh!!!

Ryeon: Why are you crying?? i'm the one who's hurt

Mina: Ryeon's face was already ugly, what are you going to do!!

Ryeon: you little...

Min: She's finally dozed off.

Ryeon: That's fine, but I can't breathe...!

*sfx: squeeze*
*sfx: snore*

Ryeon: Maybe it's because I give her food, but lately she won't leave me alone.

Min: Huh...
...

I took care of her, all these years...

*text: now she doesn't even notice me*

Ryeon: Feh.

Ryeon: You like basketball?

Min: Huh?

Ryeon: That's all you to do when there's free time.

Min: Yeah. I like it a lot better than soccer or baseball.

Ryeon: I heard there are clubs in middle school and high school

You can join one of those.

Min: I dunno...

I'm not going to join a club.

Ryeon: Why not?

Min: I don't know, but it'll probably mean a lot of practice...

That means you have to play basketball until you're sick of it.

Basketball's the only sport I like...

I don't want to start not liking it.

Things are fine the way they are.

Ryeon: (So it's like keeping your distance from something... because you like it.

That's weird.

One of the rumors floating around school lately.

Rumor #1:

: An Min's playing against Gyeong-ho Boys' School!!

*sfx: shriek*

: Min! I'm going to go cheer for him!

: I heard he trained for a year to win?

: Apparently the Captain begged him to play!

: He was honing his shot! It's gonna be awesome...!!

Rumor #2:

: Is it true that 3rd-Year named Na La-la fought a bear in middle school?!

: I'm telling you, it was an instant kill!

La-la: No it wasn't!

Rumor #3:

: Jae Hwal-yong is a lazy ass!!

: Look at this serialization speed!

...Well, none of this has got anything to do with me.

But...

Do-hun: I just don't understand the Captain.

Ryeon: ...

Do-hun: Asking An Min to play when he's not even a member!!

Hasn't he got any self-respect?!

Even if it's a friendly, it's not a game!

Ryeon: Even if you tell me this...

Do-hun: It's gonna bring the other members down, you know?!

Ryeon: Hey.

Do-hun: Damn it! This pisses me off!

Sharing a court with a guy like that!

Ryeon: Then go talk to your captain.

Do-hun: I did, and then he...!

Ryeon: I was wondering where you got that.

But Min's not going to be in the game. He's just going to practice...

Do-hun: Yeah, but it's obvious he's going to play! Why else would he help us practice?

The Captain too, but Min should be more clear-cut.

He just has to not join the club. Helping out just 'cause he was asked?

I hate that we're bending over backwards for this guy. It's not like the club's just for him.

*text: I'm not getting mad on behalf of the club*

Ryeon: (This is so awkward...)

Do-hun: It's stupid that I'm talking to you about this...

You're in a club, too, so I thought you might get it.

Ryeon: Huh?

Aw, come on, you...! Of course I wouldn't!!

Do-hun: ?!!

Ryeon: Well- well- I guess... just a li~ttle bit, maybe.

There's no need for you to get so mad, you know?

If you think about it, Min has a lot of good points.

A cute and nice little sister, for example...

Do-hun: Yeah right!! Min's little sister (I haven't seen her but) would be nothing compared to Mina!

Ryeon: ...Ah... this is complicated... actually Min's little sister is...

Do-hun: I bet she's as clueless and stuck up as An Min!

Ryeon: What?! Say that again!!

Do-hun: I bet she's as clueless and stuck up as Ack..ck!!

Ryeon: Say it!

Seon-jae: Seems like Min's causing some problems.

*sfx: slurp*

Do-hun: I bet she's as cluee...uck!!

Ryeon: What did you say?

Ack! What are you doing over there?!!

Do-hun: How long have you been here?

Eavesdropping on other people's conversation...Student Council losers...! Grck...

Seon-jae: Eavesdropping!! I saw Chaucer so I came by to say hi.

*text: For a guy getting beat up you've got a smart mouth.*

Do-hun: Chaucer?

Seon-jae: And then An Min came up so I eavesdropped a bit.

Do-hun: So you were eavedropping anyway!

Seon-jae: Whatever... you guys come over here and help me down. Hurry!

It's higher than I thought so I've been stuck here all this time.

Seon-jae: Ha... thanks.

I'll give you this as a reward.

*hands Ryeon a pear juice pouch*

Seon-jae: Pear is a great fruit. It sucks poison from your body. And good for diarrhea.

Ryeon: ...

How wonderful... Wow~

Do-hun: Hey, Prez! So the Student Council's got nothing better to do than helping other clubs?

Thanks for making things suck.

Seon-jae: You know... if you're so unhappy about it, all you have to do is go out and stop An Min on the court.

Do-hun: Are you kidding me!

Seon-jae: You're acting like the Basketball Club's been messed up, but you're the ones who asked him.

You know, the Student Council... we still have a ton of stuff to do before exams. And then Mr. An Min decides to play gofer for the Basketball Club.

We're the ones who should be upset!

Ryeon: ()That's weird...)

Min would have refused a request like that.

Seon-jae: Heh.

Ryeon: Why are you laughing??

Seon-jae: Oh no... heh heh heh heh heh

The way he does whatever he wants and causes trouble for other people is a little like one of my friends.

*text: only a tiny bit though*

Ryeon: Eh?

Around that time

*sfx: whoosh*

A buffet party at a fancy restaurant... right?

Buffet...

Fancy restaurant...

Min: (I wish it was time for the game already.)

*caption: Basketball Boy An Min (18 years-old)*

Ryeon: *nice weather~*

(If I were Min I would have joined the Basketball Club a long time ago.)

(Isn't that the easiest option?)

But I'm not Min.

It seems simple, but maybe it really isn't.

Mina: Ryeon's missing!

Ryeon: (Mina used to cry at the drop of a hat.)

Mina (crying): Mommy

They said that Min's mom moved abroad the day his family moved here.

Min's Mom: "I can't give up my career. I like my work."

Ryeon: (I don't understand giving up your family for a career either.)

*text: whew...*

Life is sure complicated...

La-la (thinking): *She's already worried about life... then as an upperclassman I should say something... but I feel sort of awkward.*

La-la (starts to sing): Someday it'll begin~

Our bright and beautiful future~

Ryeon: La-la...?

La-la: Let's row forward~

Brightly and cheerfully~

Ryeon: ????

La-la: It's nice here because of the shade.

Ryeon: Yeah...

(What was that song about...)

La-la: You were really uncomfortable when you first met us, right?

Ryeon: Heh... Well, yeah...

*text: I break out in a cold sweat even now thinking about it*

La-la: I understand. Since we all look like this on the outside.

Han-na doesn't think about that at all, and that causes problems.

Me, I don't want to stand out too much.

*text: Looks like La-la is missing too*

La-la: Even minor things get out of hand when we get involved.

So... what I want to say to you is...

Ryeon: ?

Chapter 34: Unknowable

http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=58526&no=34&weekday=mon

*sfx: paper folding sounds*

Su-yeol & Hui-wan: ...

*caption: papers that need to be dealt with within this week*

Su-yeol: I... have been nurturing a dream since starting high school.

*text: Yi Su-yeol (19 years-old)*

Worsening academic problems.

Friendships destroyed by competition.

A school without understanding.

Broken trust between teachers and students...

This school needs to change.

A capable leader like me is just what these children need. Trust and harmony!

Our green and beautiful school

*sfx: laughing*

Principal: (After Su-yeol became the student body president there hasn't been a day without laughter in these halls.)

(Now I can leave in peace...)

*text: Principal Bak Dal-geun (59 years-old)*

Student Council Elections Results

President: Im Seon-jae

Vice-president: Yi Su-yeol

Su-yeol: Vice president... vice president

Well... it's not what I was expecting...

But what hasn't changed that I'll bring change to the school with these two hands.

Soon I'll meet dependable colleagues, too! Hahahahaha

Present Day

*sfx: paper folding sounds*

*sfx: creak*

*sfx: buzz*

*sfx: crunch*

*sfx: chewing sounds*

*sfx: crinkle*

This awful life...

*text: BGM: The Disappearing Dream*

La-la: I heard that from Mina that she has a brother.

Does he know that his sister is hanging out with us?

*sfx: cicadas*

Ryeon: No... he probably has no idea...

La-la: Are the two of you...close?

Ryeon: To a tiresome degree. We're next door neighbors and go to the same school and we're in the same class and we sit next to each other

La-la: Does he know that his best friend is hanging out with problem kids like us?

Ryeon: ...?

What are you trying to say?

La-la: I just want you to know.

I don't know Mina's brother so I can't say, what he'd think of his sister and his friend hanging out with delinquents.

Ryeon: (You called yourself a delinquent.)

La-la: And it seems like you've been hiding it from him...

Don't you think even a good friend would feel betrayed by that?

Ryeon: ... That's--not really your business.

Even if Min gets mad, that's my problem. It's not like we have to tell each other every little thing, you know?

La-la: But some things you might.

If I had known that Mina's brother would join the Student Council

I would have done everything I could to stop you from joining our club.

Ryeon: !!? Th-that...!

Makes it sound like we were just dying to join!

*text: well, mina was*

La-la: ...

Do you remember what it was like when you first met us?

Most people are like you.

They keep a distance, act afraid, or ignore.

We became an official club by luck.

To other people we still don't seem like one.

Not just me... but Han-na, too, we're careful because we know that.

Even so if someone appears who thinks we're a problem, and they tell other teachers or students about it,

then this club will probably be disbanded.

To put it bluntly, no matter what happens, the school won't be on our side.

The Student Council's no exception.

It's the opposite... it's been like that for a long time.

I'll apologize for making you join such a weird club.

So what I want to say is...

Ryeon: Hey!

But still...! Disbanding? That's not fair!

...I mean, it's a weird club, that's true...

But it's not like you're bothering anybody...!

You're talking like you did something wrong! But...! But...

(But...?)

Why am I getting mad?

Beetle: Mother, there's someone I'd like you to meet.

Honey, say hello.

Crane: It's so nice to meet you.

Beetle: I want to marry this person.

Mother Beetle: !!!!

Do you think I raised you so you could marry some crane! you ungrateful brat

Some no-good crane!

Crane: S-some crane...? The nerve!!

Turtle: Wait, brother! I can't let you get married!

The truth is...I...I've always, you...

Beetle: N-no, we can't, we're brothers...

Turtle: Fool! Stop lying to yourself!

Mother Beetle: My children... I think it's time I told you the truth.

: W-what?! Mother!

: You mean we're not related by blood? Then...!!

*sfx: click!!*

*sfx: fwoosh*

Hui-wan: Aaaaahhhhh!!! Hot!!

Su-yeol: Why are you carrying around a lighter?!

Seung-eun: I found it.

Su-yeol: Found it...? In the Student Council room??!

Seung-eun: It looks like President Seon-jae's not going to show, so can we go?

Su-yeol: All you did was origami...!

Kim Hui-wan! You go find Seon-jae.

*text: I'm confiscating the lighter*

Hui-wan: Ugh. Me? Let's just call it a day.

Su-yeol: We were meeting during lunch because there's so much to do!!!!

We've made no progress!

I want to find him myself but I know the two of you will be up to no good.

(in an ominous voice) You better not be thinking about ditching...

Hui-wan: Of course not.

We're the ones who have to do all the work~

Su-yeol: Stop wasting time and go!

Seung-eun, stop folding bugs already!!

Seung-eun: They're not bugs, they're beetles. in america

Chapter 35: What You Didn't Know

http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=58526&no=35&weekday=mon

Student A: Ugh, look, it's a caterpillar*!

Student B: Gross!

*Songchoongi – Larvae of sollabang, the pine moth (Dendrolimus spectabilis)

La-la: Here, glasses.

Han-na: Thanks.

Where were you earlier?

Ryeon wasn't around, either.

Disbanding? That's not fair!

It's not like you're bothering anybody...

La-la: ...

I thought she didn't like us...

Han-na: Huh?

Upperclassman: Seon-jae? He hasn't been back.

You here on Student Council business?

Hui-wan: Yeah.

(Just as I thought.)

Upperclassman: Why don't you call him if it's an emergency?

Hui-wan: You're not in a club?

Upperclassman: Club? Dude, I'm a third year. Third year! What club.

I passed the torch a while ago.

I heard they let you go early these days because of exams.

Hui-wan: I guess.

Upperclassman: Looking for somebody else?

Hui-wan: Ah, no, it's fine. Thanks.

(He can't still be eating lunch.)

Hm...

...!

*sfx: whoosh*

Hui-wan: Ah...!

*sfx: negative energy*

...

Student: Ew!! I stepped on one!!

It exploded!!

Hui-wan: ...She said that? [referring to La-la]

I see, I see

Ryeon: You knew about it?

*text: Since you're in Student Council... even though it's a club... can't be trusted... since you're in Student Council...

Hui-wan: Hey!

Ryeon: I understand how La-la feels about the club. But isn't she worrying too much?

Hui-wan: Like being oversensitive?

Maybe, but they're doing things the school wouldn't like.

Ryeon: But they haven't done anything that bad!

Hui-wan: How do you know they haven't?

You've only been there for a couple of months.

Can you be so sure that they've always been spotless?

Ryeon: Yeah...!

...right why would I say that...

That means the Mystery Club could really get disbanded.

Hui-wan: ...You seem really worried.

Ryeon: Well...

Hui-wan: (They do say this is the age for worrying about stuff.)

That's weird. If it does, then you can leave.

Isn't that a good thing?

Ryeon: But... it doesn't seem right.

Hui-wan: ...Can it be that you've started to like it...

Ryeon: No way.

Hui-wan: Now I'm all confused.

La-la probably thought you didn't like them.

Ryeon: It's not that.

Hui-wan: Then you like the club?

Ryeon: It's not that either...

Hui-wan: Sigh...

Ryeon: You can't always divide things up into liking and not liking.

Anyway my attitude has nothing to do with whether or not the club disbands.

And it's not like I've done something wrong.

Hui-wan: (Geez. Then what are you worrying about?)

Don't worry. There's nothing you can change, anyway.

Ryeon: Yeah, that's true.

Hui-wan: It's not like La-la's wrong, but if you were going to be disbanded, it would have happened a long time ago...

Ryeon: you jerk

Then why didn't they fix that before things got so bad?

Hui-wan: Ack!!!

Come over here!

Ryeon: H-hey... let me go!

Hui-wan: Shut up!!

Man... I forgot that we're next to the third year building.

Ryeon: ??

what are you doing

*sfx: hahaha*

Ryeon: Huh?

That's Han-na...

(Oh yeah, I'm not supposed to let people know we know each other.)

Huh...? Huh... Huh? HUH?

Hui-wan: That's where he was!!!

Ryeon: Hey!

Isn't that your boss?

Hui-wan: Oh, you recognized his face?

Ryeon: Well... are they friends?

Hui-wan: Yeah, they've been friends since they were little.

They live really close to each other so they went to elementary, middle, and now high school together. And they're in the same class.

Ryeon: Sounds familiar...

Hui-wan: Plus La-la, the three of them are close.

Oh yeah, and this is just my guess, but Seon-jae is...

Ryeon: Huh? His expression... suddenly became gross!!

He's taking something out! That's... pear juice??!!

Two straws! It's pear juice for a couple!!!!

Rejected!!!!

*sfx: freezing*

Ryeon & Hui-wan: ...haha...

Hui-wan: It's a hopeless crush on Seon-jae's part.

Ryeon: Heh heh. That's hilarious.

Student A: Han-na... isn't she pretty?

Student B: Yeah... doesn't she seem different from other girls?

Student A: Our homeroom teacher really likes her.

Student B: Well she's such a great student.

Student A: She's so calm and mild-mannered... great personality.. really smart...

Student B: She's so nice!

Student A: She's a lady with class.

Ryeon: Who-who are they talking about?

Hui-wan: Who knows.

Student B: I heard she's going out with Im Seon-jae?

Student A: That's a rumor that Seon-jae was spreading around.

Ryeon: A lady with class...? Are there two Yang Han-na's at this school?

What's up with that?

Hui-wan: That's a skill, you know.

Ryeon: So why does Han-na...

Min: What are you guys doing?

Chapter 36: Truths

Basketball Club members:

Yo, An Min! Thanks for practice today.

You were great!

Min! See you at practice tomorrow!

Min: Yeah, good job today.

(Eh?)

Do-hun: *gaze of extremely strong discontent*

Basketball Club members (punching Do-hun): What's with that attitude!

Min: See you guys...

Basketball Club members: Yeah, see you!

Do-hun: What!!

Practice isn't over! Why's he going early?!

Basketball Club members: He's got Student Council, what are you gonna do?

He's already going out of his way to help us, so whatever.

Do-hun: Who cares about him?!

Basketball Club members: Anyway, Min's little sister is really cute, too...

We'll get him to introduce us.

*caption: The Real Purpose*

Do-hun: What! Now An Min's little sister is after the Basketball Club, too?

Just you wait, An Min!!!!

And Little Sister!!!!!!!

*text: The misunderstanding deepens.*

*sfx: whoosh*

Min: What are you guys doing?

Hui-wan: (Uh oh...)

(This is bad.)

Min: Is there anyone at the office?

Hui-wan: Oh. Seung-eun and Su-yeol are there.

I came out to find Seon-jae

and by complete coincidence

came to be sitting

next to Ryeon...

...

...

Hui-wan: Um... Ryeon.

Ryeon: What?

Hui-wan: Say something. I'm just making up excuses.

Ryeon: I would be too.

Hui-wan: No, it's different!

*sfx: swoosh*

*text: I guess I have to...*

Min: Huh?

Ryeon: Just so you don't get the wrong impression–

Hui- Hui-wan and I are writing a nature observation together lately.

Hui-wan: At least come up with something believable!!

Ryeon: Yahh!

My ears almost fell off, stupid!

Hui-wan: You're stupid!

Ryeon: What's wrong with observing nature!

Min: You guys...

seem really close now.

*text: wow*

Ryeon: C-c-close?!?!

Hui-wan: No we're not!!!!!

Ryeon: He's probably suspicious now, huh...?

Hui-wan: It'd be weird if he didn't.

Ryeon: Why did we have to run into him there?

Hui-wan: ...

I think it's a good idea to keep the Mystery Club a secret from Min.

Ryeon: Because he's in Student Council?

Hui-wan: That too, but also considering Min's personality...

Ryeon: An Min isn't the type of guy to be a jerk if someone's doing something he doesn't ilke.

Even if he found out

*Min freaking out*

He wouldn't make trouble for the club

*Min being an informant*

Ryeon: You, and La-la... if the third years are friends, why do we have to worry about the Student Council so much?

Hui-wan: It does seem like Seon-jae is looking the other way for Han-na's sake.

He's the one who introduced me to the club.

Ryeon: *text: I fear for this schools' future...*

Hui-wan: But, there's a limit to looking the other way.

Even if he's the Student Council president, if it gets out that he helped the Mystery Club, it won't be good for him.

Ryeon: But wait... that applies to you, too!

Hui-wan: Of course! Since I am not on the official list of members, I can wash my hands of it if thing get dicey.

Ryeon: You're a really bad kid

Hui-wan: But Seon-jae won't be so lucky. He'll probably try to protect the club to the very end.

When I say let's keep the club a secret, it's not because I'm worried about Min.

It's so that he won't get involved.

You don't want your good friend to get in trouble, right?

Ryeon: Yeah...

Hui-wan: (And I definitely don't want to get in trouble.)

And Min has problems of his own to worry about.

The Student Council's very own time bomb.

*sfx: door opening*

Min: Whoa, scared me.

What are you doing?

Seung-eun: An Min.

Weren't you busy... because of practice?

Min: Well... I thought I'd try to help out a little since we're short on people.

Are you by yourself? I thought Su-yeol was with you...

Seung-eun: Seon-jae is ditching. Hui-wan who went to find him is AWOL.

Su-yeol is trying to find them now.

*text: I'll capture them both...!!*

Min: Poor Su-yeol...

(Kim Hui-wan. ...I'm sure he'll be fine...)

Min: You have another hobby other than collecting comic books?

Seung-eun: It's not a hobby.

It helps me keep calm.

Min: Then what are you worrying about right now?

Seung-eun: ...

Min: W-what...?

Seung-eun: The teacher said we should look for weird activities.

Min: Oh yeah. I remember. He said we should keep an eye out.

Why? Did you find some nasty club?

Seung-eun: Yeah... a major one...

Mystery Club, that is.

Hui-wan: The Mystery Club was around even before Han-na came here.

It wasn't an official club then, and wasn't even called the Mystery Club.

All sort of delinquents gathered there...

Apparently it was famous for causing trouble.

It's been said that even the teachers avoided it.

Ryeon: For something so famous, this is the first time I'm hearing this.

Hui-wan: It was kept hush-hush so it wouldn't get out that the school couldn't control its students properly.

And above all, it's been a long time.

Now and then some third years talk about it nostalgically.

It's being erased to everyone's memory.

The Mystery Club.
