Don't laugh, a weekend away in Coventry is as close as I'll get to a holiday this summer. I felt that I might be a bit of a fraud and an interloper as I've never been a writer, artist, vidder, meta writer, and these days I do very little reading in fandom either - the main thing I wanted to do was meet up with friends I hadn't seen for some time, and to finally put faces and voices to people I've read online but never met in person. But the great thing about fandom is that it doesn't matter! [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee reposted a great definition of fandom at the [livejournal.com profile] writerconuk community as well as on her own LJ, and I felt I just fit right back in where I'd left off four years ago.

What happens in Coventry .... )

Then it was goodbye time, and after a very good journey (45 minutes door to door, despite some torrential rain) home to convince the children that this time I hadn't been 'stalking my man', and no I hadn't brought them back a present (though they did manage to eat most of my goody bag sweeties), and surely Coventry wasn't too far to go on a Saturday night for a curry, and that I'd had a wonderful time. And yes, I'd be doing it again next year, dates permitting. You should too!

Day 022

spikereader: (Flower - rose from my garden)
LJ won't load for me at all today, so posting this here just so that I don't miss the day.

Beware all bees, kittens in the garden!

Another busy day today, Ellen had her Grade 1 violin exam this morning, so I drove from one side of town to the other for the exam then back over here for school, then back over the other side to work. Worked flexi hours to make up for getting in late, dropped in at the MILs to give her the various presents we'd purchased for her (and did all the thinking of what to buy while we were at it) yesterday, and then got home just in time to meet the school bus.

I wondered why I was so hungry at work today, and the reason stared my in the face as I made a sandwich for my really late lunch - my cereal was still sitting uneaten in the bowl. :D

Tonight is Ellen's last of three performances of their Christmas play (she's a guitar playing male mouse and the story is about the writing of the Christmas Carol 'Silent Night' which they have to sing in German). Bethan and I are going along to watch - hopefully she won't have to carry on with any of the songs on her own today; yesterday the girl who was singing a duet with her fell up some steps onto the stage and stopped singing halfway through, but Ellen manfully carried on regardless.

It's an art exibition called the Pride of Northampton

For a 10 week period in Summer 2010, Northampton’s streets, parks, open spaces and shopping centres will be joined by a pride of 5ft lions. Pride of Northampton will be the town’s most high profile event, engaging local artists, community groups and schools and attracting regional and national visitors to the town centre. A significant amount of money raised through the auction of the lions in September 2010 will be donated to the Born Free Foundation and to a local Northampton charity, the Cynthia Spencer Hospice. Each member of the 40 strong Pride has been brought to life by a local or specially selected artist. Our team of dedicated artists has done a wonderful job in giving each lion a unique and beautiful look. Schools across Northamptonshire have also painted and decorated Mini Lions, and these will also be on display.

I know they have recently had elephants on the streets of London ([livejournal.com profile] kathyh posted some great pics of these) and we saw cows in Edinburgh a few years ago, and looking on the website there have been several similar animal invasions in other parts of the country. I think it's great, and will be taking the girls into town over the summer to see how many we can find (I've got my map downloaded), as well as into some of the local parks where others are hiding.

Born Free )

I took photos of a few more of the lions, and these and the ones above can be seen in a scrapbook gallery should anyone wish to take a look - Lions in Northampton
I ventured into the town centre today to see if I could find anything vaguely interesting to photograph for WILD (Where I Live Day) weekend, which is looming large on the horizon ie next Saturday and Sunday. If you've not signed up or never even heard of it, head on over to the comm [livejournal.com profile] wild_photos to find out all the relevant info.

I ended up in the middle of an almost modern-day Fire of London (or Fire of Northampton, anyway). Greggs the Bakers was ablaze and the fire brigade turned up in force to rescue the staff, put out the flames and hopefully save some of the baked goods at the same time.

Day 30 - A song that you haven’t listened to in awhile

*looks at CDs on book-case to my right* I haven't got any Julia Fordham on my PC, and the CD case is covered in a thin fairly thick film of dust, so it's a fair bet to say I haven't listened to her for quite some time. She's got a really deep, beautiful voice, and just reading through the title tracks on the albums is bringing the songs all back to me. She's not the most cheerful of singers though. Here she is on YouTube:

Julia Fordham - Happy Ever After
Julia Fordham - Porcelain
Julia Fordham - Invisible War

And that's that! Can't believe that I've stuck with this meme for the whole 30 days. I haven't done that many consecutive postings ever, in the five years I've had this LJ. It's been fun though and hopefully has got me back into the groove of reading and commenting a bit more and posting in my own journal so that I don't become a lurky person again.
AND FINALLY .... SUNDAY 3 MAY

This way to Part 1
This way to Part 2

No Clapping in this one please )

And last but not least a big thank you to LS (landlady extraordinaire), Kaz (my roomie, late night chatter and spooky namesake) and EM (super travelling companion) for being great company over the weekend. *waves also* to sueworld, shapinglight, gillo, jamalov, stephen, sky (and friends), hawera, eve, polarbear, deboarahw37, cal and K, Gishlane, quietlychaotic, debris4spike, chrisUK and quite possibly several others too numerous to mention, you all contributed to the fabulousness of the whole weekend.
This way to Part 1

Saturday's events didn't start until midday so we had a lazy morning sitting round drinking tea and coffee, eating toast with homemade raspberry (as it turned out) jam and browsing round the interweb. Following some frantic texting EM joined us and we made our way out into the sunshine and headed towards the Drill Hall.

They really did go to the moon you know )

Phew, nearly there now, just need Sunday to finish things off.

Part 3
At last - A Report in three stages. Or at least a series of disjointed ramblings that will only really mean much to me. I forgot to get round to writing things down from last year's Jamesing though and can't remember much about it *iz old* so I'm determined not to forget any of what was for me the best set of James events I've been to. I haven't looked at other people's reports or pictures yet, because I'm easily distracted and was determined to get this written. I know that [livejournal.com profile] deborahw37, [livejournal.com profile] debris4spike, [livejournal.com profile] gillo [livejournal.com profile] jamalov29 have posted reports and pics just from my LJ skimming, and am looking foward to reading those (and those linked to on CDS that I've bookmarked for later). I've included some rather bad pictures which include photos of people - these LJ entries are remaining unlocked for a while so if anyone wants their pic removed just give me the word.

DISCLAIMER Please do not be expecting detailed accounts of songs, set lists, detailed notes on 'how to be an actOr', q&a transcripts or fantastic pics as I donut do those. Just my observations and feelings and memories of stuff that happened (mostly to me) over the weekend. The aforementioned LJers have written reports which I am sure contain much more of that factual type of stuff. Fabulous pictures can be found elsewhere too, as I'm sure you already know. :)

Apparently the Victoria Line was closed for the whole weekend )

Still to come - Saturday and Sunday!

Part 2
Part 3
from Ikea for not being able to purchase an item.

"Sorry sir it's in our other warehouse which is closed today due to an illegal rave taking place in the car park".

Wishing a very happy birthday for today to [livejournal.com profile] ukchrisp and as it's probably already tomorrow in her time zone, also to [livejournal.com profile] oldgreymare. I know Chris has had a very good birthday already. :D I hope the coming year is a great one for both you lovely ladies.

And in the 'I am fangirl hear me squee' part of this post, I'm off to the Marstersclass in May, as well as both the UC and 100 Club gigs. I'll get the train up to London Friday afternoon (though I can't leave work until 3pm that day as I've already agreed to cover the receptionist's holiday) but will come back by coach as it's a bank holiday weekend and the trains are likely to be up the junction on that Monday. It's good to see that lots of LJ friends have also got tickets to one, some or all of the events. It's going to be good to all meet up again. :)

Photo Meme

Jan. 27th, 2009 05:20 pm
In the hopes of distracting myself from the evOl addictiveness of mah jongg solitaire (both JM and original), I thought I'd post the photo meme.

Snagged from all over the place (but most recently [livejournal.com profile] kazzy_cee as hers was the first one I came across to copy):

1. Ask me to take pictures of any aspect of my life you're curious about.
2. Leave your requests as comments to this entry. As many as you'd like.
3. Please look at the previous requests so as not to do repeats.
4. I'll snap the pictures and post them in future posts.

Number 11

Jan. 3rd, 2009 06:03 pm
At 26 he's the youngest person ever cast to play the part, despite the director initially thinking he wanted someone older. And I've never heard of him.

And the winner is ???? )

Who's Who?

Jan. 2nd, 2009 05:11 pm
It seems we'll find out tomorrow during a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential. According to the BBC Entertainment Website

The name of the actor who will replace David Tennant as Doctor Who will be announced on Saturday.
Tennant said in October that he would stand down from the show after filming four special episodes in 2009.
His replacement - the eleventh Doctor of the TV series - will be revealed in a Doctor Who Confidential programme on BBC One at 1735 on 3 January.
The casting was confirmed over Christmas and filming for the 2010 series begins in the summer.
I'm not one for looking back at things that have happened - mostly because I have trouble remembering what I did last week, let alone several months ago. I had a quick look back at the number of posts I made during the year, and it comes to a grand total of 65. I did manage to post something each month, but July only just made it with a single solitary post (and that was probably wishing someone a happy birthday *g*).

I did manage to read 50 books though (and I'm going to list them here, mainly for my own reference - though if it weren't for Shelfari I wouldn't have a record of these either).

In fact there were lots more )

So the plan this year is to try and post a bit more about what is (or isn't) going on in my life, to carry on with the reading (books and fanfic) though I don't know that I'll make 50 books this year, and to enjoy and do more with the girls and as a family. And to roll with the punches, whatever the recession may throw at us.
I've had another wonderfully lazy day, which did include a short (and misguided) trip to Tescos, along with most of the rest of the population of Northampton, it seemed. I've caught up on my LJ reading, and even managed to leave a few comments here and there. Now I'm cooking some tea for E (B has been invited to a sleepover with her friend who lives in the next street) and having a glass of vintage port, before doing some more of the huge giant crossword we've been working on since the Saturday before Christmas. It's got to the stage where I'm going to have to start looking things up in dictionaries, encyclopedias and google. Then there's some dinner to cook for C and myself and a bottle of something fizzy and alcoholic to open (might as well get some of it drunk before we toast the New Year at midnight).

And before I do any of that, I'd like to wish you all a very Happy New Year. I hope that the good bits of 2009 are very good, the not so good bits are made bearable by friends, family and loved ones, and that at least some of your wishes, hopes and dreams come true.

Yay, go me! Posting four days in a row. :D

Today I have been mostly made happy by Christmas cards arriving from near and far from friends old and new. So thanks go to Imageenigmaticblues, Imagejosephine_64, Imagecalturner, Imageoldgreymare, Imagekazzy-cee, and a big 'merci beaucoup' to Imagejamalov29. The biggest smile came from receiving a card from Imageschehrezade_1 - so dearly missed from LJ land, but so good to hear from you.

I also had my hair cut, and it has turned out very nicely, so even more happy.
Wishing a very happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] gillo. I hope you're having a filled with good things, surrounded by those you love and who love you, and that the coming year is full of the same.

Wishing a very happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] deborahw37. Hope you're having a great day and that the coming year is a good one, full of love, laughter and fun.

And I'd like to wish all my American flisters a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY. Enjoy!
Wishing [livejournal.com profile] petzipellepingo a very happy, list-making, article gathering, information spreading birthday. Yours is always the first place I go if I need to find something BtVS related. I hope you're having a great day, and that the coming year is a happy, healthy and successful one.

And I'd also like to send big congratulations to [livejournal.com profile] enigmaticblues on her engagement - I know you and T will be very happy together, and I'm looking forward to reading all about the wedding preparations.
