Being overprescribed antibiotics and being told to take NSAID’s daily really took a toll on my health over the years. A decade long intestinal issue as well as gall bladder and bile duct issue were the results. I’m lucky my kidneys didn’t fail, and that I have finally recovered. Don’t trust doctors blindly, keep in mind how many were bottom of their class, and how many get lazy and complacent by not keeping up on medical news.

Under the Geminid Meteor Shower, the desert turned into a cosmic theater tonight, and I’m thankful I got to see it. I raced my car out of Vegas to escape its glow, an hour to the northeast, near the Virgin River Basin of Lake Mead, just before Valley of Fire comes into view. From my front row seat to the universe I counted 76 meteors, with not a soul around but a desert fox who was rather curious about what I was doing in his yard. There’s a humbling, almost primal feeling to being perched on a red sandstone outcrop, with your eyes searching a starry sky that feels simultaneously intimate and infinite. I was reluctant to trade the desert’s quiet for city lights, so I lingered a while longer, soaking in the peaceful solitude of the night. Time well spent.

Five years ago today, I fell off a cliff and as you might imagine, sustained a lot of serious injuries. After a 4 hour wait to be airlifted, I arrived at a hospitals trauma ward, in pain, exhausted, & worried. As I lay there, I listened to what was going on around me, all bad things of course in a trauma ward. But one in particular stood out & still does. A young woman, 18 & ready to head off to college, tried to pass a semi and ended up avoiding a head on collision by driving off the road, but went head on into a large boulder. She is now quadripalegic. All her plans and hopes and dreams forever changed. They put her phone on speaker so she could talk to her father and we all heard the entire exchange. Her shock and fear, his heartbreak for his little girl, and by the end of it everyone in the place was in tears. Went I went through was rough, but what that poor girl went through, and her family, I can’t imagine. No matter how bad things get at times, I’m thankful they aren’t worse.

Denver is known as the Mile High city, but Lake Tahoe (which straddles California and Nevada) sits at 6,225 feet, which is over a mile. The surrounding mountain peaks top out at close to 11,000 feet. Lake Tahoe is also deeper than the Empire State Building is tall. The lake is 1,645 feet deep, compared to a height of 1,454 for the Empire State Building.

Although it’s known as the Silver State, Nevada’s gold rush began when the Newmont Mining Company announced the discovery of a vast area of gold ore in the aptly named Gold Canyon region of the state. When compared to the California Gold Rush of 1848, the modern Nevada Gold Rush is by far the larger of the two, producing more gold over a longer period of time. California’s rush only lasted for seven years. Nevada’s has been going on since 1961.

Suddenly I’m able to do things and pick up things so much easier than before.
