An August Ending

Today was yet another gorgeous day and we had nothing planned other than a leisurely breakfast and some house maintenance. It was too nice to stay home so after a bit of PoGo we headed to our favorite farmstand for more corn and peaches, only to arrive just after their 3 PM Sunday closing time. Oops.

What to do, given when and where we were? Wasn't up for Labor Day weekend beach crowds and those weren't that close anyway. What was closer was Maudslay State Park, which I'd wanted to get back to since February 2022. August turned out to be a much nicer time to visit and I hope to come back again before another three years go by.

Started with the Italian and Rose Gardens to see how restoration is going. The day's interpretive program was just packing up but the ranger was happy to chat. Even short-handed and under-funded they've made a lot of progress but of course there's more to do.

Next it was over some bridges and through the woods to the river views we went, enjoying a lovely and largely bug-free walk. Ran into someone who thought frotz looked familiar and turned out to be his horse's former owner; updates ensued. Meanwhile their friend turned out to be Polish and about my vintage but raised in soviet-era Poland vs NJ. We had a nice chat about shared heritage and missing history, some of it in Polish even (mine was never that great and is very rusty now).

After all that excitement we needed some restoration ourselves and hit up our favorite hushpuppy purveyor for takeout. Tasty as ever and actually on the way home, not just because we were in a car.

It was a good way to wrap up the month. Hard to believe tomorrow's September but the day-length don't lie. Time to squeeze out as much sunlight as possible.
