Because I'm cranky today...
Sep. 28th, 2011 11:47 am...I wanted to make an observation about one of my favorite shows (last year) H50. I know it's only been two episodes of this new season, but thus far, I'm disappointed and growing more so as I hear what's planned for future episodes.
I'm afraid that H50 S2 has come down with a serious case of Glee S2 syndrome - by that, I mean the endless stunt casting (the guy from Lost, the guy who was arresting for beating his girlfriend, Jimmy Buffett for Pete's sake! and now, I hear, James Caan which doesn't make me unhappy but still, it falls under the stunt casting umbrella), a reduction in the involvement of the team and the introduction of a new person into the group that doesn't make any sense.
Why do shows do this? H50 was my favorite show last season, one of my favorite shows EVER in the history but this season, the shine is definitely off. McGarrett, Dano, Chin and Kono are one of the great teams in TV. It was perfect as it was. I didn't want that messed with.
I understand that they have to shake things up because it makes good drama and I guess I would feel better about this if I knew where they were going. Maybe I'm just cynical because I've seen lots of good shows go down this route. But at this point, I remain underwhelmed.

Date: 2011-09-28 05:30 pm (UTC)I admit to being really hurt by fandom's casual acceptance of what is happening with Kono's character. Ff the writers gave her more to do, I'm sure more people would love her.

Date: 2011-09-28 05:34 pm (UTC)This season started out pretty good, but they're aggravating me with Kono's story. This last episode...eeh. I don't know what else is coming up (not paying attention to upcoming news, really, so this is the first I've heard of it), but now that I know more, i'm not really that happy...

Date: 2011-09-28 05:51 pm (UTC)I don't know why they won't use Kono and Chin more vs. bringing a fifth actor on board. They need to learn to ease a new character into a show vs shoving them down our throat. That being said, I didn't mind the new girl except for a few scenes.
As far as the Kono storyline, while I'm not a fan of it yet, she's getting a nice arc of her own over the next few eppys and while I'm hesitant about the actual direction, she didn't even have one last year.
Monday's night's eppy was all set-up for the next few weeks. The writers need to learn to pace things. It should have been More about Kono , then the new chic, then the case, where they did it in reverse order. I wish we would have had a scene of the team with Kono, but I still think that's all part of the big thing coming up which I won't spoil you for.

Date: 2011-09-28 06:21 pm (UTC)But one thing I do like is Kono's arc. The team stole that money to save Chin Ho's life. They knew there would be consequences. They could have let that Coast Guard commander get away with the money to cover their own asses. They didn't. Now someone has to pay the price.
I really like the fact that Lenkov & Co. aren't handwaving this plot point, as so many other shows tend to do. And, yes, it's scary. That's part of it for me. She's guilty. They all are and we know it. So how will this turn out?
Stunt casting or not, I'll keep watching just to find out.

Date: 2011-10-08 06:15 am (UTC)As I was telling Lamardeuse, I've already given up H50 because it's just too horrible. I don't watch car crashes in real life. I feel personally offended for the great characters & actors (potential) that certainly seem to have been flushed.
I do hope that there are screencaps (although I hope no one becomes seriously drug addicted or alcoholic from powering through it) and more lovely fanfic. That will be enough for me. It's what saved SGA for me too.
::sigh:: and I had such high hopes. =(
