I have a bad cold.
I went into work anyway, since Japanese people very rarely take sick days. Because of that, there's no system for substitute teachers - some other poor teacher has to teach the sickie's class and her own class together. I felt guilty about that, so I went in.
However, I didn't consider the local emphasis on the importance of hospitality to foreigners. The VP took one look at me and sent me home to sleep. No arguing about it - just go right now.
If I were a Japanese teacher, I'd be expected to work with pneumonia. I've seen people come in to work for the afternoon after getting a broken leg set in the morning.
It's very much not fair. But yay for blankets and hot tea!
