I made it through the Tenchi Bridge arc! Phew. I cheated in the end and finished it by reading the manga. It was just dragging so much pacing-wise. But now that I'm finally at the next arc, and I decided to go back to the anime.

I think I really like Sai! I like how he's socially clueless, and I really liked how he's changing because of Naruto's influence. I still ship Ino/Sakura more, but Ino/Sai is already off to a really sweet start, it was really cute seeing Ino blush at being called beautiful by Sai.

I use AI to get answers to simple questions and I hate when the bot addresses me personally. I hate it possibly to an irrational degree. (Even when someone else shares with me an AI convo they had, I get mad.) Do you use AI for anything and what do you think of this design choice?

I wrote about the time my girlfriend's online RPG became my primary fandom.

I am not immune to the sentimental allure of a fandom anniversary, and I'd hoped to post this entry last fall, roughly 20 years after the events that it describes. But in October, my offline life became very chaotic, very quickly, and I didn't have nearly enough energy to decide what I wanted to say, or - just as importantly - what I wanted to leave out.

If we know each other offline, and you have some idea of "Briar's" real identity, please don't bring it up here. I gave her a pseudonym, and ultimately cut out a lot of what I'd written about the progression of our relationship, for a reason.

Some Fics I've Bookmarked Lately

Lately meaning in the past 6 months, I guess. I've read some fun fics! Going through my bookmarks, though, I'm seeing so much Naruto fic that I think I'm going to have to do a separate post some other time for those. The theme this time is mostly social media AUs, with one outlier. Now, I haven't seen Heated Rivalry and don't really plan to because it's live action, but the social media AUs I see for it are SO FUN, I love them all.

The Hunger Games17 Last Words from Hunger Games Tributes That Are STILL Echoing In Our Heads. Yes, Still.
A Buzzfeed-esque listicle that is exactly what you would expect from the title.

Heated Rivalryplease leave a message

Heated Rivalry, Holy Situationship, Batman! + Welcome to the Internet
Ilya makes a reddit post with the genders swapped, and his post goes viral and creates a fandom for two imaginary star crossed pageant queens.

Cunk on Earth + Interview with the Vampire, Cunk on Fangs
Philomena Cunk interviews Louis de Pointe du Lac. It is absolutely hysterical, and spot on with its Philomena Cunk voice. Probably my favorite fic out of all of these.

Old Fashioned variant recipe

A while back at work, the general manager tried to get us to come up with cocktail ideas for Christmas. I came up with a variant on an Old Fashioned! It might be a drink that already exists out there somewhere, but I hadn't heard of it before. It's basically just an Old Fashioned with some orange and cherry liqueurs added, chosen based on the typical garnish for an Old Fashioned.

2 oz scotch (or whatever whiskey you like, really)
0.5 oz Grand Marnier (or whatever orange liqueur you have on hand)
0.5 oz Luxardo maraschino liqueur (or the syrup from bottled or canned filthy maraschino cherries)
2 dashes angostura bitters (or more if you like bitters)
2 dashes orange bitters (or more if you like bitters)
0.25 oz simple syrup (optional, depends on how sweet you like your drinks. The orange liqueur and maraschino liqueur should add at least the typical amount of sweetness that you would get in an old fashioned, but if you're like me, that's not quite enough sugar lol)

Stir all ingredients in ice, then strain into a double rocks glass with fresh ice. Garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry.

It's a strong drink for sure, but I like it because it's like an Old Fashioned with some nice fruity flavors that's easier for me to drink. If you make it, let me know what you think! I called it a Santa Maria for the Christmas theme and because it was a Mexican restaurant.

I thought it might make a change to write something here and post it straight away, instead of in two weeks or three or four months, idk, shocking but still. (I continue as before, getting a little more useful with every few days.) In the meantime, here are some fannish things that made me happy in this last week:

1. Another Enigma fic! \o/ 0_o

All Tapped Out (665 words) by misura
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Enigma (2001)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tom Jericho/Hester Wallace
Characters: Tom Jericho, Hester Wallace, Wigram (Enigma 2001)
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Vignette, Missions Gone Wrong
Summary: “What the bloody hell was that?”

2. Sesskasays, whose Classic Who reactions I have enjoyed so much... is going to be doing Blake's 7! I did not dare really hope, but yay. I cannot wait for her to meet Servalan.

3. Small Prophets, on the iPlayer, a 6-part comedy from Mackenzie Crook, who did The Detectorists. It has all the mix of slow build, appreciation of small things & being v down to earth of the former, with actual supernatural ingredient in shape of six humunculi that Michael Sleep (Pearce Quigley) grows in his garden shed, for reasons. I haven't watched most of ep6 yet, but cannot imagine it producing any reason in the last 27 minutes for me not to rec it warmly here.

4. Another magnitude of miraculous on from Enigma-fic - a Rufus/Adam vidlet for A Fatal Inversion (Jeremy Northam & Douglas Hodge in 1991/2) from someone on YT:

Like. This is why I wrote Rufus/Adam fic that nobody wanted! And this doesn't even have the shots with the dinner party and the make up, but, lol, I feel like it is a much more compelling argument for watching it than me saying it's very good. XD

Anyway, creative people continue to be a Good Thing is all. <3

Tuesday Top Five: A Peek at Critique

Here are five pieces of popular culture and media commentary that I enjoyed in 2025.

1. Wizards vs. Lesbians (Podcast)

The best way that I can describe this show is that the podcasters, Isaac and Alexis, have identified a recurring cluster of tropes in science fiction/fantasy, relating to queer desire, patriarchy, and empire, and are exploring how those tropes manifest across different works – mostly literature, though they have discussed a movie or TV series here and there. Their approach to their subject matter seems largely to be “we know it when we see it,” but their discussions are usually thoughtful and enjoyably snarky, even if I don’t fully agree with their opinions.

2. Broken Watch (Blog Post)

Jude Doyle’s essay is primarily about Alan Moore’s Watchmen and its influence on superhero comics, but it’s also about the power – and the failures – of Dark And Gritty Takes on established genres. (Consequently, it talks a fair amount about sexual assault other types of violence.) In this essay and others, Doyle is really good at analyzing why he, and many of us, love and hate certain works of fiction, or find them compelling and infuriating and culturally foundational, at the same time.

3. The Problem With "The Year of Dramione" (Video Essay)

Princess Weekes posts reliably insightful YouTube video essays about pop culture and fandom, with a particular eye toward racial politics and speculative fiction. In this video, she discusses three popular Harry Potter fanfics that were re-worked into original fiction and released by major publishing houses in the same year. This “pull-to-publish” practice has fascinated me for a very long time, and Weekes does an admirable job of examining how those particular authors and their publishers handle (or fair to handle) the problematic origins of their work.

4. Queer As Folk Ran So Heated Rivalry Could Skate (Newsletter)

In this installment of the Fandom Exile newsletter, Monia Ali compares and contrasts Queer As Folk, which was adapted for American viewers in the early 2000s, with recent fandom darling Heated Rivalry. I never watched the former and am newly fannish about the latter, but I found myself nodding along at Ali’s discussion of how both shows fit into the modern queer media landscape and ongoing discourse about what counts as Good Representation, and how audience responses have and haven’t changed.

5. Untitled Tumblr post about Shadow Daddies, Kylo Rens and Dracos in Leather Pants

This post, by a blogger called goblins-riddles-or-frocks, is a sort of analytical neighbor to Princess Weekes’ video linked above. I don’t currently have much interest in the “romantasy” genre, in which all three of the relevant romantic archetypes are thriving, but I am interested in Fictional Boyfriends.

I've had this post stashed away since late November, meaning to come back to it and write something more sensible about The Stone Tape that wasn't how much I wanted to icon Jane Asher's face. The reviews were already at least a couple months out of date, I think. Then life intervened and alas, I have even less brain now than then, so I should get on and post it anyway.

Eye in the Sky (2015)

This was one of the later things I pulled off Jeremy Northam's CV. The JN tumblrs reckoned it was a good one - and it was.

It's about an international military and political operation to capture the three top leaders of an Islamist extremist group in Somalia, with various layers of people involved via video conference - the UK Colonel in charge (Helen Mirren), the US soldiers running the 'eye in the sky' (Aaron Paul, Phoebe Fox), the Somali agents on the ground (esp. Barkhad Abdi), and a small group overseeing it from a meeting room in Whitehall (Alan Rickman as General Benson, Jeremy Northam as the Minister in charge, Monica Dolan as PR), plus various others who need to be consulted, including Iain Glen as the Foreign Secretary. And right there in the middle of it all, is Alia (Aisha Takow), a child who lives close to the target house.

Cut for more details )

Smartly made modern film, but also exactly the kind of knotty moral problem and intelligent writing you'd have got in a Play of the Month.

Talking of which...

Nigel Kneale's The Stone Tape (BBC 1972)

I this via Talking Pictures, after having heard of it forever, and it was great! I really loved it. The creepy concept, the scientific approach - I really wished I had screencaps so I could icon Jane Asher in it (she was wonderful generally, not just icon-able) and everything. The way that the misogyny was used was also great, and took me by surprise because I had felt my one other Nigel Kneale did give way to a 1960s/70s misogynistic trope that I had seen too often by that point, but perhaps the "seen too often" part was more of the problem, because this just made me sit up and do the, "Oh. oh" moment for real. Highly recommended if you like any brand of creepy UK 70s TV. (It IS creepy/disturbing, though. This is not a chirpy watch that will end well, please do note). It starred some other people who weren't Jane Asher, too, like Iain Cutherbertson and they were all also good, I just didn't want to icon them and their face and their red hair in quite the same way. XD

So glad I finally watched it & I enjoyed it even in summer, when I so often can't manage TV downstairs.

Official Secrets (2019)

EitS having been so good, when I realised that this one (featuring one of the 2 brief cameos that are all JN has done since 2016) was also directed by Gavin Hood, I checked for a cheap copy & obtained it poste haste. I really liked this too, and watching them close together made me think even more highly of both - this is the story of a real incident from 2002, while EitS is a theoretical piece behind its tension, but underneath, they're both smartly done morality plays with excellent casts. (Incidentally, there are 3 actors who feature in both - Monica Dolan, John Heffernan and Jeremy Northam).

When I looked up both films online the first description is always "underrated" and the Guardian apparently ran a piece for Keira Knightley's 40th earlier this year recommending a top list of her films to watch, and put Official Secrets at no. 1.

Official Secrets isn't as tightly contained as EitS, as it's based on a real UK whistleblower incident from 2002, but which ended up not having much effect, so it's a really unusual thing to tackle (& as faithfully as this - they had a lot of the real people involved in the production in some way or other). As before, it's a large but excellent cast (Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Adam Bakri, Matt Smith, Ralph Fiennes, Indira Varma & more).

More under here, although not really spoilery )

Anyway, after watching both, I got excited by clearly liking a director's stuff, so I looked up what Gavin Hood had done since - and the answer was nothing, dammit! (Before that he did Wolverine and Ender's Game, which are not tightly done morality plays. I mean, I assume not?? But I might need to investigate the first half of his CV more closely sometime. He has something upcoming lurking on imdb, which sounds more similar, but I'm not sure if that's real, or just a production hell mythical something or other.)

How this anime got sold to me (or rather, what convinced me to watch it after seeing someone on the ffa discord describe it):

First episode: Accountant accidentally isekaied into a fantasy world, reforms the royal accounting system, gets hooked on fantasy energy drinks
Second episode: Fuck or die
Episodes 3+: All that, and Seiichiro calling people intellectually lazy and getting wooed with dirty talk about how ~efficient~ he is

And yup, that is EXACTLY how it goes. It's amazing. Random accountant tries to help a girl who's in the process of being summoned to another world as their holy maiden, and ends up in the other world with her. He doesn't know how to live without working, so gets a job in the royal accounting department and reforms their system, and then gets addicted to fantasy potions that let him work without being tired. But oh no! He overdoses on magic because he has zero resistance to magic! The only cure for this is getting railed by the magic knight commander dude who finds him after he accidentally has too many energy drinks.

It is so much fun! The sex is very fade to black, but it's canonical! I love isekai where normal people get isekai'd and do normal people things in the isekai world. It's also very funny. I definitely recommend it if anything above sounds interesting at all to you.
