Since I meditated prior to my hike today, I decided not to stop at my usual cave for sitting meditation.  Instead I went further down the path and visited a second cave, larger and more secluded.

I sat on a rock for a few moments, taking in my surroundings.  I faced another cliff, and could hear various bird calls, but not much else.  The floor of the cave was cool sand and a soft breeze whispered sweet nothings in my ear as I relaxed and shed the heat of the walk.

I glanced at the far end of the cave and noticed three dark alcoves, about six feet off the ground, recessed into the shadowed wall.  Absently, I thought, "That would be a great place for a bird nest."

I checked out the wall with my binoculars.  Hmmm.  That actually DOES look like a nest in there!  I walked over a little closer.  Yep, a nest.  AND a mama Western Wood-Pewee, looking askance at me, but not stirring.

It gave me an odd feeling, as though I were creating my universe.  I would never have seen the nest and bird if I hadn't had the passing thought about it being a cool spot to build a nest.

June will be a crazy month for me -- extra custody of The Boy, houseguests, JW crunching at work, DMV appointment, dental work, and lots of other Life Demands.  So what better time to start a challenge, eh?

For most of my life, I've believed in the Clean Slate.  I remember going off to boarding school at thirteen, leaving my family behind:  A Clean Slate.  Then leaving high school and going to college:  A Clean Slate.  Getting married to my first husband:  A Clean Slate.  Getting my first divorce:  A Clean Slate.  Then my second marriage:  A Clean Slate.  Every relocation:  A Clean Slate.  My second divorce:  A Clean Slate.  Now, finally, at age forty-four, I've come to the ground-shaking realization:  There's no such thing as A Clean Slate.

When I was in college, I worked as a DJ at a classical music station.  It was an awesome job, as I could do my homework in between pieces, which were often quite long.  I became familiar with the various soloists and performing groups.  Today I got a chance to hear one of these groups live!

A Memory from Your Lonesome Past

I dragged my camera to Aliso Creek yesterday at lunch time in order to do my photobug homework.  I spent about half an hour taking photos of water birds.  I had great fun stalking a Snowy Egret.  He noticed me taking pictures and decided to take off -- straight for me!  Sadly, I was in manual mode and couldn't get the focus right in time as he flew at and then by me.  I got a lot of blurry, bad compositions which I can nevertheless use as resource material for some watercolors.
