PERSONALITY:

One of the first things that needs to be known about Spain is that he is an eternal optimist. In spite of all of the terrible events that happened to him (his fall as the strongest country in the world, the loss of his empire, humiliating defeats against countries younger than him, a horrifying civil war and a brutal military dictatorship that lasted for a good deal of the 20th century), Spain always looks on the brighter side of life, thinking that things can only get better. Even if things seem to be looking down for him, he'll encourage others around him to keep on looking up.

Thanks in part to his optimism, but also a basic part of him, Spain always seems to have a smile on his face. It's hard not to smile when your home gets the most hours of sunshine in the world! A happy and cheerful person, Spain is rather easy to please. Spain loves being around people, even if those people around him don't like his company all that much. He could be out with a large group of people or just one person, either way, Spain would enjoy his time out with them and try to make their time out with him enjoyable as well, even if his ideas only seem to make him have more fun. Hey, he's trying!

The self proclaimed Nation of Passion, Spain is indeed a passionate person. He throws himself into anything he does. Why do something if you're not going to going to give it your all? Even if Spain is not too enamored with the idea, Spain still devotes himself to it, as evidenced from the early Chibitalia strips where Spain joins Austria in fighting a war, yet is a bit reluctant due to the amount of enemies he'll be facing. At the same time, this also shows how loyal that Spain is. No matter the kind of trouble someone he cares about is getting into, Spain will help them, even if that means Spain getting into even deeper trouble himself.

Spain is also oblivious at times. He has a tendency to not read the situations he's in and can say the wrong thing at the wrong time. It's not like he means to do that, but that is just what happens sometimes. Spain often says the first thing that is on his mind, without worry of the consequences of his words. This does not mean that Spain is stupid or purposely insensitive, not at all. When the situations call for it, Spain can be as intelligent and thoughtful as any of the other characters.

Another major part of Spain is his adoration of things adorable. Spain loves children, especially if those children happen to be either half of the Italian Peninsula. Spain's ultimate dream was to live with both Northern and Southern Italy in the same house and be married to both of them (though I feel the marriage bit was a bit more of a gag than anything else, but I digress). Spain spoiled or doted on both of the Italy brothers when he was around them, however he was strict with his other colonies in the Americas.

There is, however, a darker side to Spain, hidden by his cheerful smile and disposition. Not much is seen of it in canon, but there are parts hinted. Himaruya Hidekaz mentioned that Spain might have "two faces", but the best evidence of that is in the strip in which Spain is sick and Romano goes out to get help for him. In that strip, Spain is in an economic downturn so bad that he felt as though he was going to die and he expressed that his last wish was to punch America and England one last time. Hostilities between Spain and the other nations have long since been over, yet Spain still holds a grudge against both nations for various reasons (England for the defeat of his Armada, the whole piracy thing, Gibraltar, a lot of things really... and America for the Spanish-American War that cost Spain the last vestiges of his once powerful empire).

But overall, Spain is just a passionate, cheerful person with a sunny smile.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

As a nation, Spain really only has one power, and that is basically his longevity/immortality. He heals much faster than a normal human, can sustain life threatening injuries and survive, and so long as the country is around and doing well, Spain will be as well. Though Spain himself has yet to show his recovery skills, his semi-immortality is evident as he has been around since his earliest appearance in canon at some point in the 15th to 16th centuries. It is possible for a nation to be killed, as the case with Rome and Germania, but it is incredibly difficult to be done, as it requires for essentially his culture to be eliminated.

Spain is also trained in combat. Having his nation, as it is now, be born through war, territorial disputes and conquest as done a lot for him. Spain can be a very good tactician, but he excels far more as a fighter on the battlefield. He prefers to use bladed weapons, but is capable of also using firearms, but is more uncomfortable with using them. He is adequate in hand to hand combat, enough to the point that he can stand on his own. In addition, because of his time spent traversing the seven seas, Spain is a more than capable sailor and knows his way around a boat (though the kind of boat he knows is a couple centuries old).

Asides from that, Spain is a capable football player (not that football that you play in America, real futból), guitar player, dancer, and chef. If it's Spanish, then you can bet that Spain is able to do it.
