I have two questions. The first is for any of those familiar with what this entire world is "based" on, so to speak: a game series.

Taking the time to travel through Kanto has brought me to the realization that many things are different from what I remember in actually playing what amounted to a children's RPG. Maybe it has something to do with there being different interpretations of it across different universes. It's strange to think how normal discussing something like that is, anymore.

My question is, if you are familiar with the games I'm referring to, what exactly do you recall as being different in comparison to the world we're all now forced to live in? And I mean beyond there being new Pokemon; that much has already been established. In my experience, the cities in Kanto for example- as well as their gym leaders- are the same, but the routes taken to get to them seem different here. It's entirely possible that I just chose a different path unintentionally, given the fact that traveling in real life is different from moving in a video game.

Having the opportunity to face Elite teams formed by these gym leaders is also something new, it seems.

[This translates into the fact that Nagi had intended to do the gyms in order (in painstaking, 6 100-level Pokemon to the face, order), but the way traveling went sortof threw a wrench into those plans.]

And my second question.

Assuming you do not have any ground types on hand, what Pokemon would you use as alternatives to battle Lieutenant Surge?

Grass-types who can make use of the Dig and Earthquake TMs are a good start, though you are unlikely to have access to the second. In fact, teach Dig to as many Pokémon as you can. A Dragon-type that know Flamethrower would also be a great asset, especially against Magneton.

[He's hoping that not using one that's part Flying-type is obvious.]

Also, while I cannot compare this world to any sort of videogame, I must mention that Elite teams were not an option for more than a year after we started arriving. Neither was visiting Kanto, for that matter.

Underestimating any Gym leader's Elite team would be foolish, yes. They know their type well enough to compensate for any weakness, after all.

[Which he'd expect from a leader, really.]

The train was not running, and neither was the boat. In fact, at first the locals spoke very little of other regions. There were fewer species living in the wilderness, too. This land has changed quite a lot, in five years and a half.

A type advantage isn't everything in battle
You could try training more and beat him through sheer strength.

[ This, coming from a guy who just has his starter Pokémon and no plans to catch another... ]

Oh.
Yeah, that's different. Why not use those TM things instead, then?
I mean that sounds easier to me than training a Pokémon from scratch.

That and they allow spectators. I haven't challenged a gym leader yet. I think I should have been a breeder instead.

[...that sure is a lot of stuff that Dio knows nothing about. But he's been meaning to talk to this guy again, so he'll just skip to question two.]

Given what you've said before, I would assume you've already considered an Alakazam.
diosmio: (Wait this isn't me Dio.)

[personal profile] diosmio 2016-03-24 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Dio would probably get a kick out of seeing that. Then again he'd also get a kick out of seeing someone fail at it.]

How brutal, exactly?

[Text]

I didn't really PLAY the games myself, but I watched my friends play them a little bit. I guess what's the most strange to me is all these gym leaders seem so much stronger? At least stronger than I'd assume them being. This one I'm at, in Violet City, is supposed to be the "first" gym, isn't it? I would imagine in a game it'd be more of a tutorial level, but instead I've been training for weeks and weeks.

And is his name really Lieutenant Surge? That just screams electric-types to me. Am I right?

I still can't believe it's so common that kids go out and do this all on their own. Strange. If anything, I'm noticing similarities. But again, I never played them for longer than a few minutes.

As for electric-types, unfortunately the cheat sheet I have says ground is the only strength against them. Avoid water or flying?

hi tensai!!!!

well
i would also assume that some paths are opened by default as opposed to you the player having to open them yourself
someone in town mentioned that a pokemon used to block the route from violet to goldenrod
which sounds like a "hey get the badges in order first then clear the path asshole" quest
so its like did someone already go through all that before us? :?
is the player character just hiding somewhere???
okay wow that got existential really fast

anyway!!!!
i also assume that no guards stopped you along the way going "BTW I AM SURE THIRSTY YOU CANNOT GO THROUGH UNTIL MY THIRST IS QUENCHED"
or snorlax napping in your path
thats what i remember from playing the games :T

as for lt roid-rage
knowing his lineup ahead of time would be useful
like do they have any dual types that you can exploit?
i know magnemite used to be purely electric but then got reclassed to have a steel type as well
