Character
Name: Salome "Sam" Fredericks, known mostly as Sam, Fredericks, or sometimes Pithlit (the name of her MMORPG character)
Canon: Tad Williams' Otherland series

Pull-point: About halfway through the fourth book; Sam is travelling with !Xabbu, Azador, and Jongleur, searching for Renie, and still heavily in mourning for Orlando.

Age: 15

Gender/Sex: Female, although still a little unused to being recognised as such (she's interacted a lot online as a guy, and is a bit freaked out to be obviously female in what she'll assume is a simulation)

Appearance: Pretty normal-looking biracial teenager. About 5'6", with a fairly muscular build. Brown hair, and brown eyes. Looks and acts very tomboyish. Speaks with an American accent, and uses a lot of "netspeak" slang. Close inspection might show up her neurocannular implant, a rectangular metal implant on the back of her neck.

History: In the latter half of the 21st century, VR (virtual reality) systems are very advanced. Fredericks was very into VR simulations from an early age, initially using immersion tanks and headgear, and then, when the technology became available about five years ago, getting an implant directly into the nervous system. Her favourite simulation was the Middle Country, a medieval fantasy MMORPG. She was generally assumed to be a guy by other players, and went along with it because it made life easier all around. In the Middle Country, she met Orlando Gardiner, a young boy playing a barbarian warrior, and over the course of several in-game missions, they became close friends.

Orlando's character was killed in-game, at the same time receiving a message that didn't fit with the Middle Country simulation. Against Fredericks' complaints, he started to follow this up elsewhere around the net, and she went along with him. This culminated in them entering the Otherland network - a hyperrealistic set of VR simulations - and being unable to leave the network. While their physical bodies were in a coma, Orlando and Fredericks investigated their new surroundings, being brought together with a group of other similarly-trapped users. Before and after joining this group, the two went through a number of bizarre simulation worlds. During this time, Orlando discovered Fredericks' real gender, and Fredericks discovered that Orlando had progeria and was dying IRL. This illness started to affect him in virtual reality as well, and by the time they found themselves in a simulation of the Trojan War, he was struggling to stand, let alone fight. Fredericks dealt with this in the most sensible way, by stealing his armour and riding into battle in his place. He had to rescue her. It was embarrassing.

Rejoining with their group, Orlando and Fredericks ended up travelling to the heart of Otherland, where the owners of the network (a bunch of phenomenally rich assholes seeking immortality, led by Frenchman Felix Jongleur) were performing a ritual to transfer their personalities permanently into the network. It failed, and at a crucial moment, John Dread (a sociopathic mass-murderer who had been following the group oh my god i did not realise how hard this was going to be to summarise) attacked the Other, the operating system of the network.

Orlando died in the ensuing chaos. Fredericks was given very little time to mourn, being dragged along with Renie, !Xabbu, and also Jongleur and Ricardo Klement, the only other surviving member of the aforementioned rich asshole group. They made their way down the mountain, the simulation starting to deteriorate around them, and eventually found themselves in a vast featureless wasteland of unrealised code. Attempting to find the rest of their group, they only found Azador, a cartoonishly over-the-top Romany, and lost Renie and Klement.

At the point she comes from, Fredericks has been travelling with !Xabbu, Jongleur, and Azador for a few days, and really just wants to go home.

Personality: Fredericks is a pretty average teenager in an awful lot of ways - she likes TV shows on the net, simulations, and sports, gets grumpy at her parents but loves them, dislikes school and reading, etc, etc. At the same time, her experiences in the network have brought out a lot of her more adult side. For the most part, she prefers to take a background role, and comes across as rather sulky and cowardly. When the situation demands it, though, she's capable of surprising courage and insight. She also jokes a lot, although less so since losing Orlando. She's fairly short-tempered, especially just at the moment, and impatient, and tends to call out bullshit when she sees it. She identifies very strongly with Samwise, which might actually tell you most of what you need to know about her.

Abilities: On her own account, Fredericks really is just an ordinary teenager. She's quite sporty, yes, and a good swimmer and runner, but that's about it. She knows a lot about the net and its culture, but that's unlikely to come into play in the game. She's also a decent archer and thief, skills she learnt in her Middle Country days, once she remembers that the cheat codes and such don't work.

Inventory: The clothes she stands up in (currently a hospital gown, since her body was in a coma), her neurocannular implant, and nothing else.

Her implant has no function in this world; in the "real" world, it acts as an immediate neural connection to the internet, as well as an emergency shut-off switch for VR simulations. It connects directly to her brain stem and, if activated, affects her senses.
