The Forest of Bone (Open Post)
Nojima Island was not one of Saori's favorite places on Shikoku, not by a long shot. The island, once home to a demon prince before Bishamonten had taken it upon himself to cleanse it, was still a place she felt was haunted by something. But here she stood on the prow of a private ferry, arms folded in front of her. Her nose twitched faintly, the scent of darkness wafting from the isolated little hideaway, mingling with the salt spray.
The reports from her Inugami were quite clear, after all. Fresh bones kept appearing on the edge of the forests. Human, animal, all kinds of bones and every night a dark, singing croon could be heard coming from the woods. Though nobody was reported missing, it was beginning to unnerve the villagers living there, enough that they'd begun to pray for help. So when a message had come to her, written in Jiwari's elegant scrawl, requesting that she go and investigate she'd done so. It had also said cleanse, if necessary, though she did hope it was nothing serious.
After all, the goddess had brought friends with her this time, dear ones that she'd never want to endanger. But...she couldn't very well duck out on them without arousing suspicion, which would mean they'd insist on coming along. Ah well, she could handle it...
Hopefully.

This was, itself, somewhat unusual. He'd made peace with his nightmares. The Exile had taught him to release the guilt, the anger, the fear, the horror. And he wasn't exactly bad at it even before she came along.
Stoic, was Atton.
His eyes snap open, and things only get weirder. A forest- Alderaan, maybe? No, the climate was off, and no place on Alderaan gave him such a... bad feeling about it.
He climbs to his feet, takes a tentative step, and encounters something crunchy. Tentatively, he glances down and finds his boot embedded in what looked like a humanoid skull.
"Well, this is fun."
He surveys the ground around him. The light seems oddly dim and distorted, but he could still clearly see skeletal remains scattered across the edge of the forest. Animals he couldn't even recognize, though they looked vaguely familiar.
His hands drift down to his belt. No lightsabers. No blasters.
"And the fun just keeps on coming."
He looks around again, scanning for any sign of movement.
"Hello? Anybody out there?"
no subject
Unfamiliar accent. Gaijin. Probably caught up by the evil here, certainly not tied to it. That much was clear, no youkai would work with a foreigner.
There was only one course of action a being of any worth could take, and that was to try and help extricate him from this unharmed.
"Yes! Are you injured? Do you need assistance?"
no subject
For a certain definition of the word 'alright'
"I'm kind of lost, though. Can you tell me what planet this is?"
no subject
"Earth. You're on Earth. Were you expecting to be elsewhere?"
no subject
Okay. Possibilities, possibilities. One: This was a planet the Republic hadn't discovered, one the natives called Urth. Two: This was a planet that was known to the Republic and he'd just never heard of it. Three: He hit his head very, very hard, and was experiencing a concussion-induced hallucination.
He was hoping for number two, which, given his luck, meant it couldn't possibly be number two.
"Okay, this may be a long shot, but can you tell me where the nearest spaceport is?"
no subject
"Spaceport? I'm afraid there's nothing of the sort here, sir. I...do not think I even know what a spaceport is."
no subject
Alright, so clearly this planet is a pre-hyperdrive culture. The woman before him was obviously a warrior, but was also dressed in noble finery of some kind. An elite guard? A warrior monarch of some kind? Atton's not an anthropologist, so for now he's just going to go with 'The woman who might know what's going on' and leave it at that.
"I was afraid of that. What is this place, exactly?"
He declines to point out the abundance of skeletal remains. It seems like it speaks for itself.
no subject
"It isn't safe here. This forest is haunted, and growing worse by the day. Please, come with me. We can make it back to the village before nightfall."
Open honesty and quiet surety are apparent in her voice, she means no harm and only wants to help. A stranger, obviously addled by some sort of blow to the head, deserves her help.
no subject
Great. Perfect. No, really, that's just wonderful.
Well, this woman seems like she's on the level- he's not exactly used to using the Force to sense such things, but at the very least, he doesn't feel any hostility. Of course, that could just mean the Force powers just didn't work here...
"Alright. Lead on, then."
As an afterthought, he adds,
"Have you seen any metal objects lying around here?"
no subject
She starts off towards the village, going slowly in case he was more hurt than he appeared. Nightfall was closing in though, the shadows growing long in the twilight. The bones cast an eerie shadow along the ground, odd misshapen lumps of blackness all but burned into the earth. The trees creak and groan as they walk, but not a leaf rustles, nor a branch snaps under their feet.
Saori, unable to stand the dreadful, oppressive silence speaks, though her tone is low. Disturbing this could bring unnecessary trouble down on them.
"What should I call you? I am Saori."
no subject
He matches her tone when he speaks. He doesn't know why, but every instinct in him right now is screaming to run away from that forest as fast as possible, and some irrational part of him is terrified that if he's too loud, he'll attract unwanted attention.
"Atton Rand."
He neglects the 'Master' bit. Whether it was because he was really only a master by a technicality, because he really didn't think she'd know what a Jedi Master was, or because he was still uncomfortable calling himself a Jedi, he's not certain.
"I'd say it's nice to meet you, but given the circumstances, I'll just say I'm glad you came along when you did."
no subject
It's not far to the village at least, though it's equally less comforting. Old, rusted huts of corrugated tin line the outer ring, covered in rotting fish-nets and broken tools. A thin rime of salt covers anything not covered down, a gift from the sea that leaves quite a sheen to everything in the gathering twilight. There are no lights in any windows save one, a large building in the center of town. A cabin really, though it appears to be some sort of bed and breakfast. At least, that's what the sign says.
"Inside, quickly" Saori murmurs as she picks up her pace. "I've made this building safe from the corruption."
no subject
Once he goes inside the largest building, though, the relief is tangible. It seems she wasn't kidding.
"You go around talking about things like corruption, you'll make a man nervous."
He chuckles at his own joke. The tension of that walk was starting to get to him.

She moved out to the prow, stepping behind the figure standing there. Eyes dart out to the oncoming island, scanning the shore.
"So what do you think? Is it just a bunch of angry spirits or something greater?"
no subject
"I don't feel any of the other Myojin, no. It could be spirits, or Youkai. Maybe a death-kami gone mad. But until we can get there, I won't be sure."
As soon as she said that, the boat began to slow for it's final approach, ready to let the two women disembark. The captain's furtive glances were enough to tell Saori that he wanted to be rid of them and heading far away from Noshima. It had a reputation even in this day and age, after all. A fishing village with the highest suicide rate on Shikoku, but with rich shoals of a strange, dark fish it still had settlers.
"Dearest, please be careful. Don't stray too far from my side, not here."
no subject
So she does exactly what she's told- and stays very close to her companion. Carefully stepping off the boat, Yuuna looks around. It was creepy enough and the second thoughts now were coming to her. But she'd asked for it didn't she?
"So...how far in do you think we'll have to go? I hope this is something that can be taken care of right in the village. Should we head there first?"
no subject
The docks were deserted, several boats covered in rust and oil stains just listing aimlessly in the early afternoon sun. Rotten fishing nets hung from the rigging of several, and a thick fog covered much of the island. The sun felt dimmer to the goddesses eyes too, that cloying fog blotting much of it out.
"I...do not know how far, dearest. But this place certainly feels...wrong, does it not? I think the problem may be rooted deeper in the island than the village, but that does not mean we shouldn't investigate there first. Information, and a map of the island would be best."
Slowly she started off down the dock towards town, her Hello Kitty shirt and skirt swishing as she walked. Hardly an imposing figure, Saori thought it best to keep her divine nature under wraps with her weapons carefully tucked away in the enchanted fabric.
"We mustn't split up. I do not want to lose sight of you here. If something happened, I would not know what to do."
no subject
"I'll be fine, I promise." She says that but there's an uncertainty to it. It's not like she planned on just ditching her, especially here where this was no joke. She could take care of herself just in case but here, she's not sure what she's dealing with. "I'm starting to think that we might not find anyone in the village at all. This place reeks of death, doesn't it?" A cautious glance goes around again. Yuuna trails only slightly behind as she didn't know where the village was, trusting that Saori would know where to go.
no subject
"It does. That...sickly sweet smell, it's almost overpowering the salt spray. It's like something is rotting, but there's still life here."
The road led them through an arbor arch, withered, gnarled trees lining it. The branches scraped along each other in the sea-breeze, giving the impression of knives being sharpened. Though it was summer, few had leaves, and many were plainly dying. No birds sang, and there was a fetid stillness in the humid air. The goddesses eyes watched everywhere at once, and even her calm exterior seemed to crack somewhat, unlinking arms with Yuuna only to slide one around her waist.
"I truly do not like the feel of this island. It is tainted, no matter what Uncle says. You can feel it too, can't you?"
no subject
"When this island was infested before, ruled by that demon...did you ever encounter him yourself? I ask because well, if it were possible that he could return to this place. I'm not sure how I feel about that possibility."
no subject
That question, though. That chilled her to the bone. Could he be stirring? Was it possible?
"I did not. I was in America. But I think it unlikely," Saori gave a little shrug. She wasn't confident that it wasn't possible, but saying the words? Giving voice to the idea? No, that would be a sure way to make it true. She didn't like telling even a half-truth, not to Yuuna, but worrying her like that? Quickly, she adds "It's probably just some ghosts."
But she's not so sure about that.
no subject
She still can't help but think that the bones were just a little too far to be more than a prank pulled by some ghosts.
"I'm sure you're probably right. It's too bad, this might of made a nice island to live on. You could have a nice beach home right there on the shore!" She smiles, trying to be a little lighthearted in the face of all this gloom.

A thought for later, when the problems were solved.
A train of thought that dies as the little town comes into view. Corrugated metal buildings complete with tin roofs, ramshackle old houses with rotting boards, frayed fishing nets, and a distinctive lack of decoration mark it as poor, but that's not what grabs her attention. It's the lack of sound and the thick mist that rings the entire settlement. Nothing. Not so much as a bird twittering, the hum of electric lights, or even water running.
Saori strides straight into the village, looking around and reaching out with her senses. Empty! Completely empty! But the Inugami had reported people just yesterday morning...which meant that something was off. Terribly off. And then it hits her. A wave of noxious fumes, a sucking quagmire of foul air wafting from the forest. Something...just filthy.
"Yuuna. We need to get inside. Now!"
She points towards a building labeled Nojima Island Bed And Breakfast a few paces away and hurries towards it!
no subject
They were probably all dead by now...to join the pile of fresh bones that would appear later on just like the rest.
She turns to Saori, knowing full well to obey the goddess's command. She sensed it too and Yuuna takes no time at all to start running toward the bed and breakfast, making her way hurriedly across the pavement and into the building. The door is thrown open until both of them enter, of which she slams the door shut behind them, turning back to her lover in concern. "What is it? What is it that you sensed? The people, they're gone!"
no subject
Breathing a heavy sigh, the goddess sinks down onto the stairs, running a hand through her hair.
"That. Was close." She takes a moment to collect herself before going on. "That stink in the air, did you feel it? That's what took the people here. Spirits, probably twisted by the taint here."
Oh Earth and Stars, that could have been bad. Very, very bad.
