Halfabet poem on reduction
Definition
A halfabet poem[1] uses exactly 13 distinct letters (no more, no fewer). That is, half of the 26 letters of the English alphabet.
Theme
For this challenge, write a halfabet poem on the theme “reduction”.
Strict rule, lax theme
The rule is strict - a poem with 12 (too few) or 14 (too many) distinct letters is not a valid answer to this challenge. The theme is more relaxed - interpret it as you wish and feel free to try playful variations or (mis)interpretations.
Clarifications
Length
The length of the poem is not limited. Each of the 13 letters you choose can be used as many times as you wish.
Title and verses
A title is optional, as is dividing your poem into verses. Whatever you decide, the 13 distinct letters rule applies only to your poem as a whole, including any title and all verses.
Upper and lower case
Upper case and lower case versions of a letter are treated as the same letter. The letter “a” and the letter “A” are not treated as distinct:
- “abab” contains 2 distinct letters.
- “AaAa” contains only 1 distinct letter.
Diacritics
For this particular challenge, letters are not made distinct by diacritics:
- “êëéè” contains only 1 distinct letter, not 4.
One poem per answer
If you write more than one poem, please post each in a separate answer. This allows voting to sort them into order for the benefit of readers.
Letter counter
To help you during writing your own poem, or to check other poems before deciding how to vote, you can optionally use a distinct letter counter that I made for this purpose. This will indicate which letters have been used, and how many there are, so that you can ensure there are exactly 13.
-
I made up the word “halfabet” as a portmanteau of “half” and “alphabet”, but it turned out to not be original. As far as I can tell “halfabet poem” was not previously a term, although “halfabet” has been used previously with various different meanings. ↩︎
